The day after 9/11 they announce a beta which tests two minor features? So gibs make it a Jihad? These guys are in the negative for respects points in my book.

"I bet you anything they wanted to announce it on 9/11, but thier publisher got cold feet at the possible backlash"

*looks at date*

*looks at title*

Gee, I wonder why any sane person might have second thoughts about that? Announcing a game with "Jihad" in the title on 9/11 is more inane that Purge was to begin with.

Better question - What is up with SOE doing the media blitz on the CC expansion? Sounds like someone is trying to thrash up players with hype, no substance.

I'm really looking forward to XIII. I found the demo fun as hell, despite some bizarro bugs (my aim kept flipping upwards to the sky) - the cel shading on the Unreal engine looks great and the presentation (head shot comic zoom ins) appears completely on target.

Plus I'm hoping it's a product ripe for modding.

Plus add in that they have possibly the worst tech support in the entire industry into your equation and you have pretty much the whole picture.

Throw a Nintendo in there and suddenly it's sensational. It's like crack babies are too passee to be trash journalism these days.

If everyone followed JC's 'simplicity rules' theory, the games industry would never advance.

Yeah right. Carmack helped create a whole game genre. He's helped revolutionize 3D engines on the desktop. He's been a huge advocate of game technology on the Mac.

In short, he's easily one of the most influential persons in gaming today. Without guys like Carmack, the games industry would never advance.

Making an annual release isn't exactly some new conspiracy thought up by Epic, it's a fairly common practice. Owners of UT2003 are expected to be able to get 2k4 at a lowered price. Considering the amount of free content available to UT2003 users, from bonus packs to user made mods, I don't think throwing down a few bills is much grief.

And Epic is actually trying to tune their engine to run better and faster, not slower and prettier - which is pratically heresy in this day and age. UT2003 was criticized for being too hard on modern specs, but instead of "raising the bar", they're actually acknowledging it and trying to make it better.

Compare this to Sony, releasing an expansion for a game with a monthly charge that's running on an engine that sometimes doesn't run on any hardware.

Actually the game was in pretty good shape at the time of launch if you compare it to some of the other trash thats been foistered on people.

You can always point at another game and say - yeah, well that's one worse (like SWG ). It's no excuse for some of the issues (stability, de-evolving gameplay) PS has.

The only thing they really should've waited for is to get the server loads more balanced. If more than a couple hundred people were in the same zone and firing the server would buckle. Thats gone from what I hear.

Unless they've come a really long way in a couple of weeks, you've heard wrong. Server and continent crashes still existed when I left. Although the last patch I played was kicking me to desktop nearly whenever I HARTed (which was the final straw for me), so maybe that was their fix ...

Where do you get that number from?

Concurrent players? Plenty of people playing PS are playing off the trial.

That the CC developers are the guys who worked on PS during the beta. Then on release, they started working on CC with second stringers "cleaning up" PS.

What a great development concept. Make a game that's not entirely thought out, publish it, move on to another feature set that will probably be equally not so thought out, rinse, wash, repeat...

All the while having the consumer foot the bill for this ongoing near-completeness.

Companies doing stuff like this make me look forward to UT2004 even more. While Epic is adding in new content, they're also going back and shoring up a lot of shortcomings with the engine code. Stuff that technically "runs", but it's nice to know that some companies are still concerned with it "running better".

FUSOE (I think most PS players will be able to decipher that)

Ah, Joe's just one of the lucky few who apparently has the magic config that doesn't crash on him. Or he has low standards for stability.

I do have friends who continue to play PS almost nightly, although many of them are dwindling because of the game's monotony.

"So please, before you spout off with shit, play the damn game"

Here is how you can replicate the most common event I had playing PlanetSide. Load up any game that you just spent $50 on. After playing 20 minutes, hit the Windows key to that it kicks you to desktop. Now just reboot your computer. For added benefit, pay one of your friends to be SOE tech support, and have him kick you in the nuts.

Amazing is not quite how I would describe it.

After playing PlanetSide I can safely say:

This isn't an expansion, it's a patch. In fact, patch is probably a kind word considering the game is still in development as we speak. How can you have an expansion to a game where they still trying to figure out how the base captures are supposed to go?

Oh thats right, it's SOE - and they know if they throw some gum into a box that enough people will buy it to help afford the losses they've already had due to their instable code and non-existent tech support. This is tech support that won't even talk to you unless you post in the right "format", and rarely helps you even then. Spawning as a wall? Can't get a door to open? Talk to your team, because Sony will be of no help. Oh, and if you complain too much - they'll delete your statements from their forum or just ban you. Now that's customer service.

I paid $50 to help Sony finish developing a game. I wasn't about to pay them monthly to do so, and surely wouldn't have done an expansion pack. For those of you playing and enjoying PlanetSide, I certainly hope it's worth the money. For me, I'll never buy another SOE title in my life.

I had plenty of lag when there were more than 20 people in a fighting area. It seems to differ from system to system, completely regardless of your specs (mine are well above the min/req).

PlanetSide has a lot of good features, but quality coding and customer service isn't one. My crash errors only worsened after the last patch to the point where I couldn't stay on for more then a 20 minutes, crashed if I tried to get into battle, etc.

Worse is SOE's excuse for customer service. Posting to their Tech Support forum is an exercise in frustration. If you don't post in the right "format" (which requires hunting down various huge log files which occasionally PlanetSide "forgets" to log anyway) ... they ignore you. Even if they don't ignore you, they usually just add you to your "list" of information.

Complaining too loudly about this will get you banned from the game. Yup, I was banned from PlanetSide not for cheating, or being a TKer, or abusing other players, but for complaining about SOE. It was pretty moot since I was abandoning the game anyway, but I found it to be the pinnacle of lousy tech support that the one and only response I ever got from Sony was that I was being "inappropriate" - this while player-player flaming is a secondly occurance on their forums without a blink.

Instead of new features they should be discussing patches which fix things, not break them. And they should be honest that this is still an open beta with the added "feature" of paying for it.

I know some people who enjoy PS for it's social graces, it's massive battles and squad based tactics - all things which (when the game runs) are extremely fun and very addictive. For me, the frustration wasn't worth the price tag.
