IIRC it's the darwinian upgrade that gives them guns. I'm pretty sure you're right in what you thought the laser upgrade does.

visit any major shopping mall in China, wander over to the Bedroom Furnishings Dept. and there you will see stacks of inexpensive sleeping mats each sporting a BIG POT LEAF product label tag, proudly proclaiming the item to be made of "100% Pure Hemp".
What's the big deal? People have grown hemp for textiles for millennia.

I love how these guys still seem to be making a game that's less ambitious than the original UFO:Enemy Unknown was. And it was released, what, 11 years ago?
