4. Re: World of Tanks Security Apr 22, 2013, 13:24 Tumbler
If it makes you feel better that is kind of you how feel even if you pay from time to time and are a higher tier.

The matches you're placed in will almost always be versus a wide variety of tanks. Typically a 3 tier stretch is common. (6,7,8 or 3,4,5 or 1,2,3) That initial loading screen gives you a rough report of how good your tank is versus others. If you're at the top you should do well, if you're at the bottom then job number one is don't get shot, stay in cover, play it safe, assume you're going to get massacred.

I'm at tier 7 atm, most of my tanks are tier 6, I've got a tier 7 and I'm speeding through that tank to get to tier 8. (I'm gunning for an IS-3)

More than likely the tanks that are besting you are benefiting more from highly trained crews than they are gold. I hadn't realized until recently that once you're crews hit 100% they get another secondary skill to start improving on. Some of the items you can put on your tank, faster reload, faster aiming, can make a huge difference as well.

The grind can be brutal though, if you never buy any gold and so don't get that xp boost from having a premium acct from time to time then I find that the grind is extremely tedious. I really like how you can buy a premium acct by the day if you want to, 250 gold I believe. That is $1.25. To me playing a lot for a day or two and earning lots of xp is more enjoyable than playing more matches each earning less xp.

Gold is almost required to advance past tier 7 though, the amount of xp you need to buy the tanks let alone the equipment to make them good is ridiculous to consider earning with a free account.

But it's not quite what you think, the gold isn't to buy ammo, it's to convert XP from other tanks. Something I didn't realize about WoT is that they built it so you'd play all the classes at once. You can play with one tank the whole time but that becomes very annoying. Once you research everything a particular tank has to offer it becomes "elite". This means that any xp you earn can be used to convert to "free xp" which can be used on any tank.

In practice this means you'll have a better time if you have a tank in each class or at least several tanks maxed out. Don't sell your old tanks, fully research the one you like and keep using them. Then when you jump into the game you'll have 4 or 5 tanks that all earn double xp on that first battle.

The hook is that converting xp costs gold. So if each of your elite tanks has 1000xp sitting in there you can convert that all to free xp for a fee in gold. (it's very affortable in my experience, I want to say 400 is to convert 10k experience?)

I don't know if you can tell but I like this game.

All I know about firefall is that they spent a shitload of money at some trade shows. I remember hearing people gawk at how large and impossible to miss their booth was. Couldn't tell you a fucking thing about what the game is and I'm pretty sure I'm in a...beta?

It's third person...I think? And you run through a city or something, then they give you some MMO like mission to go kill some weird looking bugs...I think you have a gun...I...I'm not even sure what hte point of playing it is so I haven't been back after the first try.

So...hopefully they can work on telling people about WTF this game is.

It's a bit harsh to put Ubisoft in that list. AC3 may have been filled with tedious side-tasks, but the main quest line was still good, and it was a really fun game for the first 30 or so hours. Far Cry 3 is kind of similar, really cool at first, gets repetitious, but is still a great game. That Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon looks like a fun little budget game.

Compared to the likes of EA, Activision and MS, Ubisoft is Looking Glass reborn.

Agreed, Ubisoft doesn't belong on the list. Despite Uplay getting a lot of shit from gamers the titles they are putting out are diverse and highly entertaining. Loved Far Cry 3, preordered Blood dragon (ME!?), traded for AC3 code, bought Anno 2070 ($16 amazon). I'm not going to pre-order it but Assassin's creed black flag looks like a lot of fun. By far the sailing stuff in Ac3 was the most impressive stuff. Build a pirate adventure game around that and I'm fucking sold. Call it assassin's creed pirate adventure and I'm nervous...

Kotaku is right. The big publishers, Activision, EA, Ubisoft, MS, Sony, all kind of suck at creating art. (Maybe it's better to think of most of what they make as entertainment, they suck at making entertainment that people think is worth $60. I think most people end up feeling like they wasted a little bit of that $60 when buying games. AC3 for $60 certainly didn't leave people happy and content) If you look at what the movie industry creates and how careful they are to keep the money from having creative control over projects I think you can see what things are so screwy at the big publishers.

There is no respect for talent in the game industry. They don't see the skills people bring to the table as valuable, they're just expensive. Cut them and get less expensive people so we can make more profitable games.

I feel like this is going to be a self correcting problem very quickly. People wondering if we're seeing a large crash in the gaming industry will likely have more to talk about in 2 or 3 years as the budgets needed to produce a AAA title on nex gen's are going to be higher and if they think they can continue to crank out shittier titles and see them sell they have a rude awakening coming.

I don't think we're going to see a crash, we're going to see massive amounts of money shift to spaces that are putting our more creative products. Mobile, Kickstarter, Indie PC games, Ouya. All of those are lower cost, lower risk purchases for the consumer. (the content) AAA games either need to get a lot better or they need to cut prices in a major way.

All I see them trying to do is force people into higher prices. We're going to cut content and sell it as DLC, we're going to have online access codes, season pass's, all that crap doesn't make your game worth more money. Over and over again the industry has shown that quality is going down with these changes.

Don't buy AAA games at launch. It's that simple. I think gamers are learning that lesson every day and once we hit the point where a majority of gamers stick to that the industry will change in a big way.

I don't think the publishers will change, I think they'll just make fewer games, more expensive games in big franchises. If the new consoles can offer digital distribution that small developers can take advantage of we could see a ton of smaller more interesting games flood the market which again just ends up killing business for the big boys. Happy Action Theater / Kinect Party is a very impressive little game, only costs a few bucks, and is probably more value than you'll get out of a lot of other games that start at $60. I know I play 70 hours of FTL at least according to Steam, I paid $10 for that. I think I paid $15 for Shadowrun and that looks like something I'm going to enjoy. I paid $5 for torchlight, loved that game. Paid $5 for bastion, didn't care for it, but excited to see Transister because I don't feel ripped off.

16. Re: Company of Heroes 2 Closed Beta Open to Facebook Affection Apr 15, 2013, 19:26 Tumbler
Company of Heroes shipped with 2 factions, the others came in expansion packs. They will likely follow the same approach here.

I think this glosses over a pretty major short coming. This game shipping with 2 factions is like Starcraft 2 shipping with only the Terrans. CoH has been 4 factions for a long time and considering that CoH2 is basically teh same game as before the only side that needs balancing is wtf are we starting with 2 factions for again? Did DoW2 only ship with Space Marines and Orks?

I assume those armies will be added in via expansions but considering what they're putting into this $60 package there seems to be some major content missing to compensate for gutting those other 2 armies from the game.

Either way, it's more than worth it. We've had a lot of really good matches so far. I think the extra dev time they've had with it internally during the THQ sale and SEGA being brought up to speed has really helped things a lot.

I'm confused why the game is shipping with the Germans and Soviets as the only two armies. There were already 4 armies in CoH and you could add to this and make it 5 armies but shipping with two armies rubs me the wrong way. For the campaigns it's fine to only offer German and Soviet but in MP why not let players pick whatever side they want to be, historical accuracy be damned.

The generals and "army customizer" seem ill conceived as well. At first glance it looks like you'll be able to build your own armies in a sense, create a custom general who plays how you like.

No, you can pick from 1 of 5 generals (likely more coming) and they enable units/abilites in the same way doctrines did in the first game. The customization is choosing summer / winter paint jobs for your vehicles. I'm level 10 and I've unlocked a winter paint job for light tanks and a summer paint job for my med tanks. This doesn't feel like a custom army at all. Maybe they'll be offering dozens of paint schemes on release and I'm just over reacting but I doubt it.

9. Re: PlanetSide 2 Certs Gone Wild Apr 11, 2013, 14:32 Tumbler
I kept getting killed, wasn't much fun

This was my first impression as well. A few things to note if you want to try again. The list of tanks as you're loading into the game, that is an extremely important list. That tells you how powerful each of those enemies is and gives you a relative guide as to how effective you'll be in the match.

When I first started I just tryed to play each match as if my tank determined how I'd play. If you're on the top of that list then go for it, you're the most powerful tank, you can probably best a lot of other tanks. If you're in the middle or at the bottom be prepared to use terrain a lot and do your best to hide and wait for enemies to come to you.

The second thing to understand is spotting. A lot of higher tier tanks can see far enough away that you won't see them. This is often because they have closer tanks radio'ng your position back to the larger tanks and artillery. Find a nice tree or bush to sit behind and wait. You see someone coming over a ridge you'll likely see him but he won't see you. Depending on how far away you are you can shoot at him and he still won't see you.

But once he does see you (typically you'll know when the turret points right at you) that means the whole team can see you and you have to move. Sitting still makes you an easy target for long range tanks and artillery. If you're spotted in the open you are in a lot of trouble because there is nowhere to hide. Ideally if you are spotted behind cover back up and keep moving until they lose sight of you. Typically 5 seconds. In most cases you'll lose sight of them at the same time. You'll want to stop to shoot more often than not but you need to find positions where it's "safe" to do that. Stopping and lining up a perfect shot won't mean much if artillery is already in the air.

I'd read up on the spotting mechanics because they're very important to understand.

I dropped a fair amount of money into this game when it launched, maybe $40? That sounds about right, by that point I realized that the game was only fun for me when I was spending money. The unlock system they put in place made you play for an obscene amount of time to unlock new weapons and upgrades that were very useful. You could unlock tiny things like better scopes after playing for 20-30 min on average, but my issue was it cost a huge chunk of game currency to get those scopes and saving them up to just buy the next weapon was a far better plan. It ended up feeling like this never ending grind to get really basic crap.

Spending money unlocked all kinds of cool stuff and once I found HE rounds for both tanks I was earning 100's of certs an hour. Even at this rate it still felt like you barely made any progress. Worse still the gameplay became predictable. You'd spend 10-15 min spawning and traveling to a spot where the fight was. You could air drop into a battle but why no just shoot yourself in the head, that is more fun. You need to come into a battle heavy unless you just want to be points for someone else.

I got pretty good with the tanks, upgraded zoom capability and HE rounds just massacre infantry. The problem was even when you were excelling int he game and earning all kinds of stuff there was just no end to all the upgrades you'd need to open up different gameplay methods.

I haven't played the game in months, can't seem to stop playing World of Tanks. That game is fucking great. It's a grind for sure but the matches are fast and intense. It's never the same repeated battle, one minute you're dominating and the next minute someone is dropping artillery on you that blows your tank up in one shot.

Passing on the nexgen consoles seems easy so far. I am hoping the games won't change that. In the end if the consoles are going to treat you similar to how pc game companies treat you, criminal!, you have to authenticate, used games are the devil!, buying games for the PC is going to be a far better deal considering how amazingly cheap they become through services like steam and GMG. Plus mods. Tryed the CoH2 beta at a friends house the other day...then I played the CoH mod eastern front. I don't know how they managed to fuck that up so bad but playing the original game just feels better.

PC has more options for games, lower prices on games, same restrictions, higher prices on hardware. Overall I think the pc is going to be the preferred gamer platform judging by what the consoles are aiming for.

Yes, because I want to pay for stuff I will lose. Yeah.

There is some wisdom to this idea. If you offered a more powerful gun or ammo or something, if that didn't ever expire or go away the game would essentially be handicapped for people without this stuff.

World of Tanks does this pretty well. You can buy premium tanks which have their own pros and cons but the ammo you get "Free" is not the strongest you can have. You normally have to spend gold to get the best ammo and using it is permanent, if you buy 50 rounds, after those 50 shots you're back to standard ammo.

I've noticed you can spend credits on them now but that might be a perk of premium that I hadn't noticed till now.

There are also lots of boosters you can use for one battle each time, they cost gold, give you an advantage but don't last more than one battle/use.

The premium tanks stay with you forever though. You just repair them as normal after they get blown up.

Eve Online also has a lot of permanent loss stuff going. There are definitely people ok with "paying" for stuff they'll lose. I guess it's like Gambling, you're risking your stuff and that gives some people a rush when they play.

News Comments > Jay Wilson: Auction Houses "Really Hurt" Diablo III
77. Re: Jay Wilson: Auction Houses Mar 29, 2013, 16:17 Tumbler
How about just dropping loot designed for my character only. It's so much fun to get something awesome for a Barbarian when I'm a wizard. Who wants to just equip something like that and keep playing when you can start a three DAY auction to get gold then spend that gold on something that takes another three DAYS.

The game would probably be a lot of fun if the loot drops were designed to be fun playing solo. They're a complete joke. The claim that they didn't alter the drop rates to feed the auction house is rage worthy. The "game" is the auction house, the stuff you do in game is more a of a mini game to get items to trade on the auction house.

It would be unwise for them to ship the console version with the same drop rates they have now. They can make the game a lot of fun if this just quit trying to push everyone into the auction house.

6. Re: Game Reviews Mar 28, 2013, 13:31 Tumbler
The most interesting thing to me about Sim City is how well EA completely fucked everyone. All I heard prior to launch, from people playing the 1 hour demo and the press who had longer game play sessions, was that it was fun. Everyone was looking forward to playing more.

I didn't start hearing people complain about the limitations on city size and how easy it is to max a city out until just about launch time. At that point it was hard to pay attention to the few people worried about that.

During launch I don't remember there even being a lot of talk about the actual game because nothing worked well. Then after a week the tidal wave of comments on the actual gameplay started coming out and all the trouble people were dealing with to have those online features like sharing with other cities and working together was not worth it. Then the whole traffic issues, fire and police getting stuck.

Man, whoever did the marketing for Sim City better be getting paid a shit load because he fucking rocks. How he/she managed to hide those flaws so perfectly prior to launch is impressive.

Don't buy launch games from EA. It's a terrible idea to do that.
