I wouldn't expect Polygon to appreciate the value of a new PC peripheral currently. The VR tech we're seeing currently is for the PC, even the headset Sony is developing is years away from being able to see major studios start supporting it in the way they can right now on the PC. VR is at best a nex gen tech option for next Xbox and next playstation.

A lot of the gaming media can't recognize a gaming landscape dominated by PC again when the consoles have held the throne for so long. Gaming on a PC is more expensive in many ways, you run into a lot of problems you'd never see on consoles and without that headset the differences might be easily ignored compared to a game on consoles.

But that headset is a big deal. I think people are going to lose their fucking minds when they see how fun a racing game can be or a flight sim. Even a FPS game will feel totally different when you can glance left or right rather than turning your player. Imagine having a neckbrace on constantly. You can still turn and look but you have to use your whole body. You can drive, you and walk around, you can still do everything but then try doing all those things again with the Neck brace off. (and there is no border to the real world you can see)

I imagine whats going to be hard to adjust to is playing FPS style games when you're seated and in game you'll be standing, crouching, leaning, even laying prone. It's going to feel really fucking weird when you see yourself stand up in game but you're still in a chair. Or if you're going to play standing up then you press crouch or go prone you're going to have to learn to deal with staying in the same position. It might even be easier to play a game like this and crouch when you crouch, stand when you're standing, lean for real when you lean in game.

It's going to change everything. And until the consoles catch up we're going to see a major shift of consumers going to PC's. People like Pachter and sites like Polygon aren't going to welcome that change because it's a disruption in their business model. It means they have ot adapt to technology in another field that they've currently ignore.

I should really go try out my dev kit 2. Got it a few weeks ago and wanted to get moved before putting the thing on but feeling like I need to try it out. Fuck moving. Hate this house half packed up waiting for the sale to close nonsense. Grumble grumble.

News Comments > Star Citizen's $55M Sets Crowdfunding Record
16. Re: Star Citizen's $55M Sets Crowdfunding Record Oct 1, 2014, 12:36 Tumbler

And pretty much everyone agreed that the one part of DE:HR that was developed as a separate module (the boss fights) was a terrible part that in no way, shape or form felt like part of the actual game.

I can only hope SC turns out like DE:HR. The boss fights were dumb but they didn't ruin the game for me in the least. I thought that was a phenomenal game. Replay value was my main complaint because it didn't feel like there were enough choices to make replay worth my time. But that first play through was everything I hoped it would be.

As SC is supposed to be an online game with a persistent online universe that could be a major problem but so far they've proved themselves to be able to adapt to player feedback and with a budget this large they can afford to bring in huge updates and change the things that don't work for players.

That first release of AC is pretty rough all things considered, but now we have custom keybindings, we can straff in normal flight mode and I would expect things to continue to improve as we get further in. (straffing in flight mode kills your throttle currently but I'm guessing that will get fixed eventually)

AC3....that is a fair concern. That game was a big mess and I don't want it to be like that. So is destiny for that matter. Feels like all the problems in Diablo 3 at release got pulled over to destiny. Shit loot, tons of time spent out of the game doing stupid shit. (loading, selecting destination, watching ship, walking around tower area) Feels a lot like dealing with that stupid RMAH in Diablo 3. Play play play, surf EBAY (er B-Bay! Blizzard Bay)

I don't know, the more gameplay I watch the more I think it's just a glorified Civ 5 mod rather than a successor to Alpha Centauri. Hope I'm mistaken though.

I'm trying not to watch gameplay because of this. I'm hoping that won't be the case once it's released but it did look a lot like a civ V mod a few months back when I tried watching some gameplay.

Civ V mod would still be fine, but I hope they're able to make it feel different enough to call it a new game.

I'll keep an eye out for sales and see if I can get it at enough of a discount to where Civ V mod would still feel fair considering price. Crossing my fingers for $40!

I'm also holding back on buying a 980gtx in hopes of a game I want being bundled. Anyone hearing about bundled game plans? Far Cry 4 would be nice!

Oooo, new ship types!

Passenger liner! Doh, seems like science / hospital ship is running away with the vote.

Most recent patch added custom keybindings and sli / crossfire support! Gonna have to dig my computer out of my garage and fire this thing up. (we're moving)

Battlefield 4 was a big disaster. I'm interested in seeing how Battlefront turns out only because the IP is more interesting but Hardline or anything else that will be just a variation on BF4 is not interesting in the least.

Fucking District Attorney's have time for this bullshit but not time to investigate and prosecute dirty cops?

We sure are lucky to have defenders of the public standing up for what matters. You might be attacked and killed by cops in your area sure, but these wild terrorist taxi services are the real threat. They offer better prices and better service than the established shitty stuff that pay us lots of taxes so that shit is public enemy number 1!

Maybe Uber and others should start adding a $5 FU tax that goes to the local cities just to level the playing field. Seems like this all comes down to taxes generated from official taxi companies.

So is this retroactive? Can Star Citizen be penalized for not doing shit and doubling their initial estimate?

It's laughable to claim Star Citizen is "not doing shit" with the money they've been given. This is the last project that needs to be reminded they need to deliver something. They are far and away the most communicative and productive crowd funded project the industry has. No one even comes close to these guys.

cryengine doesn't support their game design and they'll be a year or more rebuilding it to support double precision.

Heh, would not be surprised. I have to assume that their estimates for progress were no better working under a publisher and so far it's gone like this:
We're basically done with the DFM, it should be up today or tommorrow. Then 2 weeks goes by, ok DFM is up guys! We did it!

Now this 0.9 patch they started talking about being done and it was more like 3 weeks before they put it up. Double checking some comments I made, 22 days ago they started saying the .9 patch was ready in a day or two. 6 days ago it arrived so 18 days after they thought would be ready. So we're not at 3 weeks yet but with the next major release, 1.0 I assume, we'll likely get a 3 week period where they announce it's ready and then actually deliver.

So knowing that the long term goals could be WAY WAY off.

BUT! In their defense while they estimate being done way to early they also over deliver in content. The major features expected in 0.9 I think were a race track and racing ships. We got new hangars, asteroid hangars, new targetting info, new control sets, and a lot of other little features so it's not like anyone is feeling jerked around at the end of it. They're real good at delivering the goods even if the road is windy and slow.

Meh, I tried booting up and playing the last one recently. I just wanted to go blast through the game in god mode and see all the content and after about 2 hours I lost interest. Never turned it back on.

It's a great looking game, I'm surprised I don't enjoy it more, it's got all the things I normally love in these games but my feelings on 2 have made it easy to pass on this new one. Lots of end bosses, lots of different enemies, and locations. I don't understand why it feels like a chore to play.

I'll buy the new one on a steam sale and never play it eventually. I'm sure the install will kick ass though.

Wasn't this the idea with that stupid chip on the credit card? You don't swipe it, you just put it close the pad? Who the fuck would want this on your phone? If it's there waiting to send info you can literally find a way to walk around ala walking dogs and just take money from people who get close.

Heh, why did I think walking dogs. (sleeping dogs)...no...watchdogs.

Why is anyone fighting over this? It's a horrid idea just like those stupid credit card auto pay chips are. Don't hacker conferences have a running board of hacks into local laptops connected to the wifi network? Your laptop certainly has more safety nets up vs your phone. This sounds like a horrid fucking idea for our phone.

And look how long it's taken credit card companies to tighten up regarding unauthorized charges. It's a matter of minutes before I get warnings of suspicious activity and a few years back it was days if I got a warning at all.

You think apple is going to contact you about suspicious apple pay activity right away? Do they do that now when you buy something for $100 in candy crush? Buying anything in those free to play games seems like insanity so should they already be contacting people about all that shit? You see them doing that?

Yeah, go ahead and drop money into the apple wallet. I wanna watch what happens.

News Comments > Gratuitous Space Battles 2 Trailer
3. Re: Gratuitous Space Battles 2 Trailer Sep 17, 2014, 17:05 Tumbler

Looks interesting, more refined interface which will be a pleasant change.

I was hoping to see collisions and location specific damage and things happening because of that. For example an engine is blown off and the ship starts turning slowly in one direction for a few seconds while they crew stabilizes thrust or something. (or shuts down an engine to compensate.

This game would benefit from systems and features that make combat unpredictable and always changing. One game you're forces charge in and everything goes right, you take out a ship which causes damage on others, ends up giving you a decisive advantage in the battle. Next battle you fighters attack an incoming frigate swarm, one of them collides after damage with a heavily armed destroyed causing a massive explosion and cripples several ships around it.

I want the battles to feel like they are an out of control car that you're fighting to keep on the road. It's eventually going to crash but it's a fight to see how long you can keep it going.

Like FTL! Every time I start that game I don't know if I'm getting blown up in 2 moves or making it all the way to the end. With enough practice you might be able to consistently get pretty far but it's just too unpredictable to know you can win each time.

News Comments > MS/Mojang $2.5B Deal Confirmed
106. Re: MS/Mojang $2.5B Deal Confirmed Sep 16, 2014, 02:42 Tumbler

This seems like a bad move for MS. Minecraft as a multiplatform title is hugely popular and profitable. When MS starts only making the newer additions and updates on the MS friendly platforms I think other companies are going to try and step into fill the void on other platforms. (nintendo, sony, ios, etc)

I feel like there hasn't been a strong competitor for Minecraft in part because it's available on everything. Who wants to build a minecraft style game to compete against Minecraft? Assuming MS comes in and says Minecraft is exclusive to Surface, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows! then I think that competition will show up.

Someone is going to build this game bigger and better and ms is going to be stuck holding the gamer version of myspace. And MS is literally the last company I'd assume could build or maintain something like minecraft. They're going to dlc the shit out of that game and it's going to be like playing a f2p time sink "game" on ios.

9. Re: Transverse Funding Reworked Sep 12, 2014, 11:46 Tumbler

The pitch video isn't good enough to get support at those prices. Not with SC being in the news all the time. If they changed those prices to about 10 - 20 % of what they are now they might be able to get 500k but I don't see how the game has a long term future. Elite is almost done, SC by the end of the year is going to be a multiplayer combat game at least, possibly racing and fps stuff as well...

The game isn't that bad but those prices are ridiculous. If they go back to the drawing board and pay some better modellers to make everything look better then try again in a year or so maybe. I'll always want more space games but that video looks like an early gen 360 game in many spots and you want to market it to PC gamers? Try xbox live arcade, on the 360.

Unfortunately we are getting ready to move so everything is packed and I want to wait till I get to the new place to set it all up. Hurry up horribly slow house buying process!

Am I missing something here? What is so exciting about a few new maps for the hanger? I watched the video, and it looks like it is just a room to store your ships. You log in, walk 10 feet to your ship, get in and leave.

Is it really a big deal if your hanger looks like an office building or the inside of a rock?

Hangar Trailer

The hangars are likley a sneak peak of what the final game is likely to resemble. They're building a lot of planetside content now but keeping it behind closed doors, they are going back and doing that to the Hangar's and I think the plan is to adding new sections to the hangar so you have a lot of room to explore and see cool space stuff.

Well...buy the ps4 and ps3 version while you can I guess.

That is pretty disappointing. It seems like MS should be focusing on making their platform interface better all around. The home screen is ugly and unpleasant, the voice commands are a mess and I end up having to repeat myself all the time. I bought that remote simply so I could get around on that thing without picking up a controller or wasting my breath.

The xbox one is kind of a mess right now and I don't see how buying something like this is going to insentivise them to fix their systems. It's like Nintendo paying for Bayonetta exclusivity, it doesn't feel like a win for the system, it looks like a "fuck you, if you wanna play minecraft you gotta do it here! Hahaha!"

Remember how well it worked for At&t with the Iphone? Fuck you, you want an iphone you get at&t! Remember how well it worked for vita? You want vita 3g? Fuck you, you get at&t!
