News Comments > Star Citizen at $73M; Rental Equipment Credits Controversy
116. Re: Star Citizen at $73M; Rental Equipment Credits Controversy Feb 23, 2015, 11:21 Tumbler
It gets more baffling by the day that people still have negative things to say about this game.

Atm it's $45 to get a jack of all trades starter ship (Aurora) or a Dogfighter starter ship (Mustang). With that purchase you get a playable game that is being updated at least monthly, new content being shown/discussed weekly, the most recent update brings the game way more into balance with ships like the mustang and Avenger dominating in pvp. (Avenger is $60, Mustang starts at $30 but I think the one owning my ass in pvp is the $90 Delta Version)

It's been a while since I purchased an in game ship but I am tempted by that mining vessel that just got introduced. The multi crew part is what makes me hesitate. I like my ships to be good for solo as well.

As far as the microtransactions / P2W / REC stuff I think it's just par for the course. We were always expecting players to be able to purchase credits in game. (limited per day I believe) The game still needs to be built so I don't think it's unreasonable to give someone a decent ship in the game if they kick in $300.

Considering everything can get blown up and it's gone for good I'm not sure what there is to complain about. A person pledging for $200+ might have a great starter ship for dogfighting but it still goes down pretty quick when it gets shot at. Even if someone has LTI (life time insurance) I don't expect that to mean they can just respawn instantly in the same area and come out in a fully armed ship while someone else can only die once then needs to work up to getting everything back.

Insurance is going to be fairly cheap so whatever the downside is for dying the only difference for a new player and an original backer with LTI is going to be a small amount of credits.

The REC stuff is meant to protect the value of pledging. They could let everyone fly any ship and use any weapon but that is a huge reason people pledge in the first place. When ships come out in Arena Commander it's an opportunity to use them now versus waiting until the full game comes out. REC keeps that in line. No one is going to be buying in at $45 and then earning rec to get all the ships that othered paid hundreds of dollars for.

It's pay to develop at this point, there is no "win" right now. Would the game be better if no one owned any ships other than the aurora / Mustang at the start of the game? Mabye, but then the game wouldn't exist or if it did some publisher would be pushing it out the door complete or not this holiday season and getting ready to build the rest of the game and call it Star Citizen 2.

This game is more fun to be a part of in development than most games are after they are complete and on store shelves. And we've seen games that offer premium high powered vehicles for sale to compete with people who earned them play the game. (world of tanks) Those premium tanks do not dominate everyone. Matchmaking puts them against similar powered enemies and at the high end the paid tanks end up a notch below what a player earning credits and xp from playing the game can get.

CIG is going to continue building newer and betters ships for the game and people will have to earn those in game. In a rather short time I'd expect that everything that was pledged for will be a notch below what you can earn in game.

Seems like this guy and Phil Fish need to team up. That would be very entertaining.

I'm not advocating against vaccination, but those people who insist they have a right to decide if their babies will be forcibly injected with drugs are the ONLY people with any sense. They absolutely MUST have the RIGHT to DECIDE. And if their concerns are addressed and questions adequately answered, they'll CHOOSE to vaccinate. i am deeply worried and embarrassed to share a species with anyone dumb enough to waive that right, or worse, advocate its elimination.

That sounds like I'll do a little research...

SACRAMENTO Dr. Richard Pan, a pediatrician and Senator representing Sacramento and Senator Ben Allen, the former Board President of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will introduce legislation that will repeal the personal belief exemption that currently allows parents to effectively opt their child out of vaccines in our schools.

Yeah, see, you're the fucking problem. You and a lot of other people hear some little snippet and rather than looking into it closer you just jump to whatever conclusion you want.

The law would change an exemption for going to public schools. Currently you have to have your kid vaccinated to go to public schools. But there are exemptions! And one of those is "Personal Belief" aka the parents don't believe in Vaccines.

They are talking about getting rid of that exemption. No one is going to force drugs into your baby. You can home school them, you can send them to a private school (although my guess is they might follow this policy soon) or whatever you want but if you want public school then you need to them vaccinated.

Will be interesting to see a few games on Twitch or youtube.

It seems like they're trying very hard to present it as an alien / predator esqe horror game but all I remember from the beta was it felt more like a game of chase the monster around.

There was never a chance to surprise the players and attack them, it seemed like it was all too obvious where you were. (the monster)

When they started talking about this game I figured it'd be something like a dark jungle you had to sneak around in. Like the hunters start with a pistol after having crash landed or something. They have to sneak closer to each other and find their weapons and armor. Maybe they have to cover themselves in mud to be invisible, maybe they need to sharpen spears and set traps, maybe the monster looks like a predator. Maybe they should have just made a game like what happened in predators?! Lots of hiding and sneaking around and once the humans have equipped themselves back up they can hopefully kill the a predator style annihilation of jungle with a mini gun!

I'm willing to give the game my attention for a few hours, if it's good then it's probably something I want to play...but I don't have a lot of hope.

Is it just me, or does it feel like the flight model handles the same during the races as it does in outer space? I would expect less inertia in the atmosphere as the ship should be able to use the atmosphere to turn more sharply (should also result in a lower top speed through frictional resistance).

I think it plays just like space, I don't think there even is a flight model for atmostphere flight. I think you're expected to boost while you turn all the time which I find annoying. Racing might be more interesting if they disabled boost so you had to try and deal with all that speed in the turns.

Star Citizen's one module is actually pretty good now. And getting better. There's nothing quite like it. The closest thing would be a vintage game that nobody is playing.

I've been moving so was finally able to fire it up and play last night on a 970 gtx and my god does that things look gorgeous.

The game looks unbelievably good and it's handicapped by a lot of interfaces atm. That god awful helmet projection system is terrible but they've started moving that info onto screens in the cockpit. With all that crap out of the way it's breath taking.

I played a coop vandal swarm mode the other night and the most amazing stuff happened after I died when I could see the ship and the game without that interface getting in the way. After I'd used my lives and couldn't respawn the game just kept jumping around to other ships and letting me watch from various angles. Holy shit, that game is gorgeous. I sat there watching someone else fly around for at least 15 min just amazed at how good the game looks.

It's got a long way to go still for sure but what you can play today is damn impressive and prob worth $20 on it's own. I think it's $40 to buy in at this point at the lowest level, Aurora. I know that is the first ship they're updating on HUD. If you jump in and fly that some of the info has been moved onto the little screens already.

Also the hornet is a god damn death machine. I think I killed 1 guy in 10 waves, the other guys was in a hornet with 6 guns firing them altogether, my Avenger spent most of the time firing my main gun and getting no kills. Seems that having the same weapon on all hardpoints is the way to go. (or at least similar) Couldn't hit shit trying to fire my secondary sucker punch guns that are fixed. I guess using those means you're the sucker.

the new owners still plan on releasing EverQuest Next as planned, though it sounds like supporting PCs is a low priority going forward, as TechCrunch says they speak of plans to develop more game for PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile.

oh my, polish those resumes!

Seriously, go find a new job. They're going to go out and hire the cheapest people they can get and make shovel-ware for mobile. Who buys a PC dev and changes them over to build PS, xbox and mobile stuff after they rebrand them. Heck, their name might be the only thing of value. (SOE) And they lost that in the purchase.

Bad idea, bad price, bad timing, who green lit this?

I just realized this also has a SP campaign? I think this was simply a MP mod, I liked it better that way. Not only did they have to reskin everything so it looked like cops vs robbers they also had to make a SP campaign? Ugh.

They should have made this a MP only game and reduced the cost of the project so they could sell the game at a lower price. At $60 it's a joke...not even a funny joke, it's just sad.

This should have simply been one of the dlc packs for BF4 that would come free with the premium pass.

Meh, I've yet to run into issues with keys where I buy from. (Mostly GMG and Amazon) I know you can buy them off random people on ebay and third parties will sell them on amazon I think but seems like you're asking for trouble.

Fake concert tickets? That would suck. Cost of games pails in comparison. I have never understood why people pay so much for concerts. WTF. I'm not a big fan of crowded shit in general but it's like paying for the feeling you get sitting in bumper to bumper traffic with the radio on. WTF people.

17. Re: Star Citizen Public Test Universe for All Backers Jan 21, 2015, 14:19 Tumbler
I thought Arena Commander 1.0 is a public test for backers.
So now you can test the patches for the test?

Yeah, that is my first thought as well.

Saw the title and was like, "Awesome, they've got the larger world up and running and now we can....test the next Arena commander patch!? WTF!?"

This is an agonizingly long wait. They seem to be able to deliver content just in time to keep me interested but I would like them to deliver something that feels complete in arena commander very soon. Even if it's just two or three ships I think that would be better to have the full polished experience on those ships instead of the dozen different things we have now all in various stages of development.

It is what it is. Tim Schafer described game development as tons of little projects all coming together at the end and nothing ever feels done until suddenly it's all done. (or something like that) So this is how it's supposed to look I guess.

I just want to fly my ship around space and not feel like I'm in some battle arena. I want to land on space stations, mine asteroids, load and unload cargo and go launch my Merlin and scout around. That's in the next patch...RIGHT!?

They really need to just focus on making a game. Right now they have a pre-Alpha combat simulator with really shitty flight mechanics, buggy interfaces, and laughable control schemes. If you have a hotas setup, you need to set your rotary trims to dead center, or your ship will fly backwards. That was a fun one to figure out.

To anyone who's been watching the progress of the game your suggestion is laughable. They continue to rake in millions advertising and promoting the game at the same time they develop it so they should just keep doing what they are doing and laugh as they cross 100 million.

I'm curious to know if The Interview's projected box office take was higher or lower than that download total.

I rented it at home and watched it and couldn't make it through the movie before falling asleep. I tried to finish it 2 night later and ran out of time at the end of rental period. So I ordered it again!

It's a really stupid movie that has a lot of funny moments in it. At no point was I ever interested in going to a theater to sit down and watch it and I'm surprised they only charged $6 for the rental on streaming.

I would not have been surprised if this movie finished it's opening weekened in the single digit millions assuming all this drama had never happened and they'd released it as planned so I hope that releasing it for rental at home was successful for them.

Good on Valve.

I don't have any plans to buy this game but I feel like all the people throwing their hat into the ring on how awful this game is are going to help it be a bigger success than it ever would have been.
