The reason FEAR's gameplay was so great had little to do with the bullet time gimmick.

It was great because, just like Doom, Quake 2, Unreal Tournament, and Duke Nukem 3D....the guns have KICK. It was simply fun to shoot someone - the sounds, the way the enemy reacts to the shooting, or simply the animation of the gun itself.

My beef with Instagib is that it forsakes all the strategy involved with using different weapons, managing health and armor and reduces it down to a simple twitch game.

I'm a good twitch player but if there isn't some strategy involved then the game becomes two-dimensional and quite boring. Unfortunately most UT2k4 CTF players apparently disagree since it is nearly impossible to find a healthy, thriving "regular" CTF server with quality, skilled players.

But for those of us who refuse to use anything but mice for our FPS games...how are we going to be able to use mice with our Playstation 3 since most of us don't have a proper flat surface to use near our TV? I mean, other than a coffee table. (How awkward would that be?)

ATI's graphic solution for the 360 is, however, easily on par with the X1800 or Geforce 7800 series.

And let's not forget that that one of those video cards cost as much (or more) than the ENTIRE Xbox 360 system.

Software developers aren't killing PC gaming, ATI and NVIDIA are. Who the fuck can afford $1000 for a proper gaming rig? And $1000 is assuming you already have a decent monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

$500 for a video card is just retarded. The idiots who run out and pay that kind of money for a video card just invite ATI and Nvidia to continue to push those products.

If I can take a Xbox 360, plug in USB devices like my camera, have use of a keyboard, and can output to DVI to work with a proper monitor...who needs a PC? I'll gladly stop the $300-$400 yearly upgrades necessary to have a good gaming PC as SOON AS I CAN.

And I guarantee I have been PC gaming for far longer than most of you.

The original UT had awesome music and huge, epic levels....it did definitely have a very "otherwordly" feel to it. Anybody remember some of the great ambient music of UT?

God I miss that game so much. Why can't there be another big UT CTF community like the old days?

[if all they include is DM, TDM, CTF, and maybe one or two more fun modes I will be very happy. and if they get rid of Instagib I will be ecstatic.[/i]

Here here!!

Instagib is a fun diversion but to have 3/4 of the CTF servers running it is asinine.

Community is WAY too splintered with all those mutators. Keep it down to DM, TDM, and CTF.

Is CTF dead anyway? When was the last BIG online game that featured CTF as it's #1 game mode? Quake 2?

I like to see game companies get into the Christmas spirit (ex. WoW's christmas stuff). Too bad this game is just dreadful.

Are there any other games you folks know of that have little Christmas maps/levels/items/themes?

I never understood why more people aren't still playing this game.

It's incredibly modable, still looks great, has the best netcode out there, and is cheap as hell. The vehicles are a blast to drive (and actually respond to commands!). Too many idiots playing Counterstrike and BF. Those two games have ruined the PC multiplayer community - both have laughable hit detection problems and emphasise map memorization over skill.

Now if I could just find my stupid install disc....

The original Postal was somewhat funny, if clumsy.

Postal 2 was abominable.

Nintendo is definitely playing their cards right this generation. Cheaper, more innovative gaming. They know they can't win a pissing war against MS or Sony, so take an alternative route.

People will buy a Revolution just for Mario 128, Zelda, and Metroid...especially if that wand controller works as well as it should.

I don't want a game to become like some expensive cable tv package, where I feel compelled to play simply to get my money's worth

Wow, that is precisely the feeling I got from playing WoW late last year. I honestly adore the game, but after 3 months of playing I felt like I was OBLIGATED to keep playing because I had already spent money leveling my character as well paid for the next 30 days.

Even still...the game is a gigantic time pit. I can't help but think that time spent playing could be used to read books, spend more time at the gym, or somehow bettering myself.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: what doomed UT2004's multiplayer community was that there were so many modes to play in. It splintered the community in a bad way, and then all the mods took it even further.

This is so true.

I've never seen a new game come out that splinted the users so much. You had CTF then you had Instagib CTF. Then you had low-grav instagib CTF. Etc etc. It was nearly impossible to find a GOOD, REGULAR CTF server.

And this truly is one of the best multiplayer games. Completely blows BF:1942 and Counterstrike out of the water in terms of skill required, ease of use, graphics, etc. And to think I bought this game for $25 when it was first released...amazing.

Let's hope Epic understands that putting all those mutators and game modes into the game (while adding value) only splinters the gamers, weakening the competition, and hurting the lifespan of the game.

Sounds like they chose the first level of Quake 4 to use for the demo...very bad choice, it's one of the worst in the game. The levels got far far better as he game progressed, and has some really nice levels and battles towards the end of the game.

Not really. The first level is one of the better levels in the game actually.

It's a crap game. If you want a generic, but solid shooter, go get Call of Duty 2. It's much more fun.

Everything Ray Marden said is spot-on. I bought the game and beat it within about 2 days. Like someone else said earlier, I had to force myself to finish the game. The storyline is terrible: essentially you're just going through a bunch of levels and turning on or turning off generators to eventually destroy the planet.

The guns suck. The rail-gun is absolutely worthless - even low-level grunts take 3 slugs to put down with that gun.

Voice acting was good.

Models and skins are terrible. Not even up to par with Doom 3.

Multiplayer? Provided you can find a server where there are actually people playing, it can be at best a Quake 3 deja vu experience.

ID has jumped the shark, kids. They have successfully killed their two major franchises within the last 18 months. Carmack should bail out and do something worthwhile, because I think a whole lotta people aren't really going to give two shits about Quake 5 and Doom 4.

Nobody with the necessary skills is willing to put in the kind of man-hours to put together a good mod.

Furthermore, very few people are playing mods. This makes the mod effort pointless.

Remember the days when there were be several hundred people playing Loki's Minion CTF for Quake 2? Those days are gone. Counterstrike is no longer a mod, it's a game of its own now. Ditto with Day of Defeat. Valve was smart to bring those two under their tent, lots of good additional gameplay with very low overhead.

Running With Scissors does not understand their product sucks. These guys really do believe that the gaming industry is "out to get them" and that reviewers were paid to hate their game. The fact remains Postal 2 was a horrible game.

and Vince Desi? Honestly, have you guys seen pictures of this guy? Or read what he's said in past interviews?

If you haven't played it you need to. It's just that good.

Have I stepped into some sort of dimensional warp? Are we living in a fantasy land where Far Cry is considered superior to all other shooters?

Look guys, HL2 is the THE STANDARD by which all other shooters are judged. Ask any FPS developer which game they set out to beat when making their own product and it's Half Life 2.

Far Cry was a fun little game with a great engine and some amusing gun play but it's a Ford Mustang next to Half-Life 2's Porsche 911.

This board has a history of being a Quake hangout so I should have anticipated the backlash against my comments that FEAR was the only shooter to bother playing today.

I wasn't a big fan of NOLF1 or NOLF2 and I do think that Wolfenstein was actually more fun than either of those games.

But with FEAR, Monolith has earned it's place right up there with the other big boys on the block (Epic, iD, and Valve).

I think many of you need to start opening your eyes to the critical reception these games have earned at gamerankings.com. Professional critics paid to review these games would have many objections to some of the uninformed opinions shown in this thread. Far Cry and Quake 4 superior to Half-Life 2 and FEAR? ROTFLMAO
