The reason they are announcing this is the X community has been looking forward to it for a long time. (I check their site daily for news on it) The original X started out as a bench mark, then became a rolling demo and finally a game. They aren't going to add any blur effects to this at all, they just want it to be something so you can make sure your computer can run it. This is non interactive but is actually the real game engine so if it runs on your computer it means the real game most likely won't crash. So at least with this method you know the game has a stable engine.
Also, this does not mean they aren't bringing out a real demo. They will be but real demos take a lot more time to test and debug.
Plus this is something the community actually asked for because they want to see something and seeing as the developers are too busy finishing the game to put together a real demo I think its great that they at least offer something.
They have also made available some very nice, high quality movies already so I don't know what you all are crying about. What other company has giving out screenshots, movies, a nonplayable demo, and then a real demo? Baldur's Gate is the only I can think of.
Really now, this is just a bonus compared to what most companies put out.
