News Comments > Left 4 Dead Patched

11. Re: Left 4 Dead Patched Jan 24, 2009, 05:17 Ventura
Not to mention there actually has been word on both

Great, I don't know about anyone else but I'm sure going to be able to sleep better at night now.

I love my coop, but the single player experience in L4D is the same shit over and over. Once the whole "it's cool how they rush" novelty thing wears off, you'll find yourself putting the game down pretty quickly.

They could patch crash bugs and exploits until the cows come home for the difference it makes to me. I won't be touching it again until the SDK is released and we start seeing some custom content.

Hype is hugest for a game at it's release. That's when they'd want to have the sdk ready to go. But no, they gotta pop it out a quarter of a year later. What are they doing, waiting until the point at which nobody cares?

Guitar Hero World Tour: Aussie Track Pack

Everyone over at the Rock Band forums call Bobby Kotick and Activision the devil, and all that crap, but I don't see Harmonix releasing Aussie Track Packs for Rock Band. Hell, I don't see Harmonix doing anything for Australians.

12. Re: DoW2 Patch & Maps Planned Jan 20, 2009, 15:32 Ventura
It uses the CoH engine so if you can run CoH well, you can probably run DoW2 well.

And wasn't the CoH engine really just a more advanced version of the original DoW engine?

It would be nice if the engine has again improved this significantly for DoW2.

Yeah didn't they just start the beta test or something? Talk about the shortest beta in history.

I have a feeling that, while this game will end up holding it's own, it won't quite be the smash hit that the original was.

News Comments > Valve: "Pirates Are Underserved Customers"

35. Re: Valve: Jan 19, 2009, 03:26 Ventura
Technically, this doesn't prove anything. It's merely corroborating evidence. Other factors could have been radically different between those two time periods, including the ease of importing a game and the relative value of their currency (still rupples?) to USD.

You're picking nits, because you could never actually prove the reason why. Still, it does pay to think about these things with a little common sense.

People don't like having to wait for things. They also don't like being treated like they're second-rate customers.

Add to that the ease with which you can pirate PC games these days, and it really doesn't take a degree to work this out.

Those people can have the game right at their doorstep on the American release date

Damn, I want your source. I've never been able to get it on the American release date. Ever. The best I could hope for, assuming it's not out here in local stores, is up to a week later. If there's a good store around here that imports, and imports that quickly, I'd sure love to know about it.

Still, you've got a point. It's not alright for me to pirate just because in Australia we typically get games a week or so later.

That said, coming from someone who does usually have to wait, when you get companies that do simultaneous worldwide releases, boy do you love those companies. To give it to us at the same time as the yanks, that's respect.

I like how so many companies go out of their way to treat their US clients better than the rest of us but then still have the nerve to talk up piracy to us. When you treat people like crap, they're a lot less likely to be concerned about doing the right thing by you in return, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly what's going on in Russia.

The readership of bluesnews and especially the people that post comments on bluesnews, are hardcore pc gamers. They have seen all and played all

All I see is a bunch of comments about how the graphics suck so the gameplay must suck too, and there's nothing hardcore about that point of view.

News Comments > Need for Speed in Trouble?

18. Re: Need for Speed in Trouble? Dec 13, 2008, 20:42 Ventura
Shit, I haven't played a Need 4 Speed game seriously in closing on a decade now.

What was wrong with having completely different tracks that had nothing to do with each other? You had a countryside track, a mountain track, a city track, a forest track... none of which was connected in any way with any of the others.

Now though, they want to just build one city, and then have you race different routes through it. Boring. You do it twice and you've seen everything. Then someone got it in their head the whole underground/pro street shit was worth doing, which of course, it wasn't.

Go back to old times. Give me completely different tracks in completely different settings, and make cops optional.

News Comments > Used Games Hurt Game Quality?

30. Re: Used Games Hurt Game Quality? Dec 8, 2008, 16:07 Ventura
1. Sell the product as OEM consisting of no more than the jewel case and disc

They're already doing that with Left 4 Dead. That was the lightest box I've ever handled, and with good reason. All it came packaged with was a 'quick reference card'; cd key on the front, primary controls listed on the back.

When was the last time any of us got a nice thick manual with our purchase? Rest assured, these guys have already been selling OEM's now for quite some time, but at regular prices.

25. Re: Used Games Hurt Game Quality? Dec 8, 2008, 15:49 Ventura
Now publishers and developers just see revenue the initial few weeks regardless of the game's quality, and then gamers start buying used copies

The thought occurs that if they did a better job with the software, there wouldn't be used games available for purchase so quickly. But no, god forbid they actually wait until a game's done before shipping it.

David Braben isn't exactly qualified to talk about this anyway. Elite? That's gotta be like 20 years old now. Was Gamestop even around back when one of his titles might've been on the shelves?

Its almost as if i'm in a movie theater playing games

Up until recently I was gaming on a screen that size and at that kinda distance, but it was just too much. If you play any kind of FPS, it'll make you sick. It's akin to sitting too close to the screen at the cinema.

Bigger is only better up to a point.

14. Re: Good Old Games Sale Dec 3, 2008, 16:14 Ventura
Like others in here I'd generally have more interest in the $5.99 titles than the $9.99 titles. Nice to see Die By The Sword in there, had a lot of fun with that one back in the day.

That said, if they can ever get Magic Carpet 1 and 2 up on that site, updated to work with Windows XP, I would definitely go shopping

I'll buy it because it's Star Trek and I'm a Trekkie (granted, I didn't buy Star Trek Legacy, but I said I was a Trekkie, not that I was stupid).

I'm not surprised everyone starts off as Captain, even though it is a little disappointing. They probably tried setting it up so that you have to scrub plasma conduits on someone else's ship to make your way up to Lieutenent, but then realised that wasn't very much fun

News Comments > Game Profitability Clarification

10. Re: Game Profitability Clarification Nov 24, 2008, 16:14 Ventura
Ah, so companies should be satisfied with good enough?

You're missing the point.

The idea is to make a lot of money, so if it makes just a little money, well, that's not enough to be deemed "profitable".

In our humble eyes, it probably would be, but you know these suits, they want enough to be able to have their cake AND eat it too.

Incidentally, 4% seems awfully low for an industry where so many sequels tend to get released. You know, Sims, Need for Speed, Neverwinter Nights, all the CSI games, Command and Conquer, all of the Blizzard and EASports sequels, GTA, Fallout, Tomb Raider, Far Cry, Call of Duty... etc... etc... etc...

If only 4% of games returned a significant profit, we wouldn't have nearly so many sequels.

A bit amusing to see a hotfix released for this so quickly, what with v1.1 having been delayed for so long.

News Comments > Supreme Commander 2 Announced

18. Re: Supreme Commander 2 Announced Nov 12, 2008, 15:46 Ventura
Sorry to say, but I am so over Chris Taylor. If he truly is the man most responsible for TA (am I the only one who has my doubts here?), then that means it's been over 11 years since he released something that I felt was really worth writing home about.

Titles like Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander 1, I went out and bought on release day, but with each release he seems to just abandon his titles quicker and quicker. The expansion to Supreme Commander, which was supposed to make things better, just made it worse.

I'm at the point now where I don't care whether Supreme Commander 2 comes out for the pc or not.

News Comments > Beatles Music Game "Not a 'Rock Band' Game"

4. Re: Beatles Music Game Oct 30, 2008, 16:24 Ventura
I would guess this project will end up much like the GH:Aerosmith that was released. It will be a celebration of their legacy and you'll play through their career, perhaps as the characters themselves. I don't mind what they do so long as the tracks can be exported to Rock Band 2, and the "article about the conference call" states that existing controllers will be compatible.

News Comments > Newell: Gamers Smarter than Publishers

6. Re: bah Oct 17, 2008, 10:25 Ventura
There's a lot that goes in the whole process and I don't think the publisher is the only or even primary influence in the game's quality.

Not the only influence, for sure, but I do shudder to think how many potentially good games we've missed out on over the years because the publisher grew impatient. Granted, we've probably missed out on just as many because the developer sucked too (Mad Doc Software comes to mind).

Either way, I think it's fair to say that without a good publisher and a good developer, any game is pretty much screwed.

News Comments > Newell: Gamers Smarter than Publishers

1. bah Oct 17, 2008, 09:15 Ventura
This is a no-brainer, really.

The problem is that the average publisher doesn't give a crap how to make a good game. They're only interested in making money, and since that desire supersedes everything else, their solution is to stuff the retail channels with garbage in the hope that it will sell.

Good games take hard work and passion, not something most publishers are known for.
