Just thought I'd chime in here.

I've been a pretty vocal critic of Steam and Valve's actions, and vowed to never purchase the game. Well lo and behold a gaming buddy (unaware of my bane for Valve) went and bought hl2 for me for xmas.
When I first got the box, I realized it looked like it had been opened. I figured he had opened it to check it out. Well after installing 5 freakin cds worth of data, steam told me the key was in use. My buddy got it from Costco, so returning it was a snap. Got a new one, and used that key, and it has worked ever since (5 days so far i think).
BUT, I have gotten at least two emails notifying me that I used a cd key that was already in use, so I am a little paranoid that they would block my ip or something. It was still up last night though.

Frankly I have to suck up a little. This game freakin rocks. I've been playing UT/bf42/ and now DC for a long time, and HL2 beats everything in terms of graphics and playability, but the physics are incredible. I played CS for the first time about a year ago, and found I was getting owned, but the new version does seem "slower", less spastic.

I still don't agree with the Steam concept, especially if they ever turn it into a pay-to-play, but I have to say it works fairly well for me.

And both play really well on my amd2600/ti4200/512-3200 system. Easily ~60 fps.

Wow.
For a bunch of people complaining about VoodooV's ranting and raving, some of you (warhawk) seem to be doing it quite a bit more than he is. A think a post count in this thread would be intriguing.
Here's a thought, understand that Voodoo is really has a problem with this, but you except it. Fine, move on, but be freakin mature about it.
You should realize also that his is a widely held opinion, and that this is a well known industry site, that is well read by many.
One voice can start a movement.

Not to rehash it or anything, but I see Voodoo's point. (although personal attacks are never useful in arguing, especially on the interweb)
I just thought I'd give a cooler head's opinion:
I have been waiting on a demo to play hl2, and now that it came out with Steam, I probably will not d/l it. I agree that you should not need some piggyback program to browse/patch etc. It's not so much that Steam is intrusive, it's that this is only the first step. A gateway program if you will. Next thing you know more and more software will have bloated piece of crap frontends that you have to have running and reporting back just to open a freakin app. The more people who gripe about the people griping and except this crap are doing an injustice to the gaming (and end user for that matter) culture.
I have the ability to purchase hl2 (I have had more than a few $50 meals :)), but it is the principal.
Stand up and have a spine.
I wonder how many of you are in the EA threads bitching about their "monopoly".....

I used to work at a fast food joint and you had to scrape the "crust" off of the mayonaisse (sp?) every morning. I like mayonaisse (again,sp?), and have never seen crust form on the stuff in my fridge... I don't know what that stuff was, but I don't think it was mayonaisse.

edit: and Krispy Kremes are over hyped - small, thin, lard rings. Bah! Give me some dough man!

I feel no shame in downloading.

edit: I went and read the article. That is hilarious. And they got them for back royalties too, since Jan 03. I don't get the worldwide part, how can they sue you when you are broadcasting from a freakin sovereign island somewhere. Guess they will resort to sanctions? lol.

Like I said be careful with the screwdriver, although I have had one pop out and jam down onto the mb three times in a row and apparently chipping that area is ok :). That was a while ago, after you do it many times it is alot easier.

Oh and great (but really lengthy) instructions at http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

um go here: www.sharkyforums.com
ask there.

or:make sure you use the risers that the mb came with (DO NOT screw it directly to the case, use a razor or something to spread a thin layer of silver onto the die of the cpu, line up the fan, clip the side without the tab down, then use a reg screwdriver to clip the tabbed side down (be careful and do not let it slip out, and don't wiggle teh fan once it is on.

there's alot more, but that should get you started. Go to Sharky, very helpful folks there.

Wow I don't remember reading that it was going to use DX9 textures. Oh well, good thing EOD 0.3 comes out on the 20th.

"If you don't use any vehicles you are good as dead because infantry have no chance against those jets and tanks."

I dunno about that. I play AT alot in DC and I do fairly well, those stingers are unstoppable when you aim them right. As for EoD, I haven't played it in a while (what version are they on now?) but agree that the atmosphere was incredible, but not really what I really wanted.
Also, there has always been talk of how DC got alot of "help" from DICE, because it was a huge mod, and EoD got shafted, because they knew early on that a retail Vietnam based mod would be made, and DICE was unwilling to help EoD on the level that they helped DC for obvious business reasons.
