Not buying any Firaxis game until after first real patch. I learned my lesson with Beyond Earth.

More like a few years and a couple of expansions.

May end up that way, but at least by the first patch there will be enough hands on reviews and such to know if there's any initial worth there.

Wow, all of the negative ninnies here... I for one think this would be fantastic!

Games-Workshop has a great IP, and fantastic writers at their disposal, but their games division is focused on milking out every penny they can from customers at all costs. Whoring out their IPs to low-skill developers because they are paranoid that any game that comes too close to the tabletop experience will detract from their miniature sales.

Hopefully it's not another MoBA...

This is a port of the iOS game that was terribly monetized. New characters cost money...missions cost money...skill slots cost money...equipment for your characters cost money...

Arena Commander 1.0 Release - More of Everything (including bugs)

Wow, sounds like a mess.

As an engineer/developer, I'm not bothered or concerned about the dev progress so far, it's basically normal. The pace and response time is as expected for a couple-hundred person operation (actually, on the faster side TBH). Weekly builds of any given large program are in no better shape than this.

-scheherazade

The pace isn't the issue at heart here, the problem is the ever-expanding scope of the project. With the way that the game has expanded from a mission-based space flight-sim, to a persistent universe flight-sim that starts off as a mission-based flight sim, to a persistent universe flight sim with built-in FPS functionality that starts off as a mission-based flight sim, it will be a miracle if there every truly is a 'Star Citizen 1.0' that actually fulfills the current scope of the game.

Would have rather have seen some sort of 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 asymmetric alien type vs human gameplay.

There's a lot more potential in that model than there is in this 4 vs 1 crap.

hahah why do you care how much time he spends reading about Star Citizen? I also have had a great time following the project and am enjoying the ride.
Once the game ships, if it sucks and I end up playing the game half the amount of time I spent reading about the making of it, does that somehow rewind the clock in space/time and make the past following the game less enjoyable? Does the amount some people have as expendable/hobby cash make you jealous because clearly some people are wealthy.
The more money wealthy people put into Star Citizen as well as just growing the amount of backers, stands to make the game that much better. As I said earlier, obviously there has to be some trust in the developers involved.

Wut?

I don't care how much time he spends, he's the one who said "I love watching all the behind-the-scenes videos, browsing the forums and seeing the game take shape" coupled that with the fact that he's in every thread here defending it...

I wouldn't spend that much time on a game, but he obviously wants to. I was just pointing out that his physical/emotional investment in this game is going to be detrimental to his health if it doesn't pan out.

You can spin the utterly ridiculous amounts of money some backers are putting into this game, any way you need to if it helps you sleep at night, but the reality is that spending exorbitant amounts or real money on virtual items in Star Citizen, is just as retarded as the $1,000.00+ bills in Clash of Clans.

Which you're perfectly entitled to do. The advantage of episodic is that it gets the game out quicker and it allows CIG to incorporate feedback into future episodes. This isn't a traditional game - it is based very much on community feedback. The Next Great Starship was a great example of that, as the winner was voted off twice by CIG but ended up winning.

What I don't understand is why people are getting annoyed by how much the game is raising. If you're interested in the game then that money goes to improving the quality and depth of the game; if you're not then it doesn't matter. When I backed the game I wasn't expecting it to end up such a success and have so many compelling features added to it. Nobody was forced to back it - those who want to pass or wait until it is properly released can do so.

Star Citizen is an amazing project and I love watching all the behind-the-scenes videos, browsing the forums and seeing the game take shape. I haven't been this excited about a game since the original Unreal Tournament.

Jesus...if this game doesn't pan out to be the greatest game in the history of gaming, you are going to need to be institutionalized for the catastrophic mental breakdown you are going to experience.

Just the sheer amount of time you must spend watching and reading information about this game, and then defending it every chance you get must be utterly exhausting.

21. Re: Wasteland 2 Released Sep 19, 2014, 14:46 grudgebearer

Combat is still pretty lame. They added headshot as a feature, but really as it stands you can pretty much put everyone on ambush and just wait for the AI to run blindly into your line of fire, until explosives come into the picture. Then it's whomever get's there pipe bombs/nades off first.

Definitely underdelivered on the "tactical combat" aspect that Fargo touted in the kickstarter and afterwards.

I got my copy free with my Torment pledge, so I guess I can't complain too much.

My first guess is that the first major version Mojang puts out now that MS is in control will require all mods to support the current version, with some sort of framework for managing the mods built into the game itself...

After that they'll probably start trying to work the Windows App marketplace into Minecraft for future mods and releases.

Wooohoooo! Between this, Wasteland 2, Original Sin and Witcher 3 in February 2015, it's a fucking GREAT six months for RPGs.

Have you played any WL2 yet? The combat is pretty terrible.

How so? Which camp are you from? "Not enough like Fallout" or "too much like Fallout?"

There's just no tactics to it at all. Early on before explosives, since there are no formations your guys enter combat in a clump, first round you move them to cover or just crouch and set everyone to "ambush". The AI is pretty tard, so they always rush into your field of fire, so most battles end by the second third round as you decimate them the first round. You literally have 3 options in combat, crouch, attack, and ambush which is basically overwatch. Later on it get's even worse because you get grenades, and so does the enemy, which are completely overpowered in that they are 100% accurate and do about 100 damage which is instakill unless you are level 10+.

No feats, no aimed shots, no body part targeting, very little environmental destruction; it's just really boring.

I hope PoE doesn't fall into that same hole and spend all their resources on the story and forget that combat is machine that progresses the story and needs to be done just as well.

Reading through the comments here, I'm kind of surprised at most. Just trolling for fun? I've followed the development of SC closely, and as far as I can tell, it seems to be pretty well on track. The core space sim technology is obviously there, and it's actually pretty fun to play around with all by itself, frankly.

On track? Yeah, it's on track to run right off a cliff.

SC has got to be one of the most ambitious games every thought up, and it is being managed by a man with a horrendous track record in delivering on his proposed ideas.

Will this game ever be finished? In my opinion, it probably won't be as far as fulfilling all of the proposed features it is supposed to support. More than likely there will be several module releases similar to the Arena Commander to keep people on the hook. They will all be buggy, and will need to be updated and tweaked and won't support all of the ever-expanding features, but people will be getting 'something' for their money.

In the end, the inability of the CryEngine to scale to meet the needs of the game will be blamed for its failure, and Chris Roberts will have the gall to ask for more money in order to create a game engine from scratch.
