Well, for all its worth, the Beta demo was FUN, but we kinda hoped all the bugs we reported would be fixed before release.

@136:

Steam is more than "distribution".

It also requires constant internet access, only way to access content, its a resource hog and buggy piece of shit.

Neither of this can be said for StarDock Central, which also distributes files - WHEN you choose to do so, and is no requirement to run any of the software.

Edit:

Steam is the way Hitler or Stalin or Pol Pot would have distributed software.

Well, My impression was that your approach needed .connection always when playing the game.

The approch used by totalgaming.net is just for the download. Then you're "home free".

Updates etc still need to be connected, of course, or you can download the patches and install offline.

No, it is based on trust.

Some fucker will always share that, and there is NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP IT. BUt there is no need to make this more painfull than it has to be.

Online order og game.
install key sent to email.
Enter key into download app and download game.

Simple, problem free, and it WORKS.

Again, no need to encrypt or anything.

Offer them the game, and advantages of being a subscriber, such as access to beta-testing new versions, patches, forums, community packs etc.. like they do with Galactic Civilizations.

Simple as that.

Those who want a free copy will get a free copy regardless.

Those of us who just want a "FREE" COpy (Free as in, I can do what I want with the copy and use it on ALL MY COMPUTERS without a cd-in-drive or system-unfriendly copywrong viruses (such as Safedisc, securom, starforce to name a few)) will purchase the game.

CDBurner Scenario: Shops would still ahve to be hooked up to the "publisher"s system to be able to sell a copy. All files are burned in the store/kiosk and get tagged with a purchase id upon burning. There are no restrictions in place on the cd, and the customer can install it on all his systems. He can even 'spawn' a demo copy (for supported) titles to others if he chooses, and they can purchase the game from teh same kiosk/store if they choose to. Heck, might even throw in a "referer" thing, so you can enter the ID of someone refered you to the game, and they get a 5$ discount ont he next title.

The objective of this is not to stop unlicensed distribution/copyright violation, but to ensure that the pubilc gets the games WHEN THEY GO GOLD without having to worry about shipping or anything.

If you want a box, sure, you can order it from some "legacy" stores such a Amzon.co.uk or whatever, but for the majority a CD-BURNER and a color printer will serve the purpose fine. You get the game, color inlet and a casing. Thats all you need.

Bittorent is not a guarantee not to get paid. I Did not say to put it up on suprnova or the other bittorent sites, but using the same distribution method would ensure that the copy gets distributed in an effective manner. And the objective was to distribute it through either method 1 or 3 (the way you wrote them) e.g. Either through Kiosk - Copies are downloaded to all the kiosks or available at a close mirror site for quick access. Or even a "gold-master" that is uploaded to the Kiosk/store with new titles, if they are in 'remote' areas with non-quite-so-fast-internet.

A direct download from the store is also a great way.

Somebody is always going to be excluded, thats why you can have teh direct download being a integrated part of the store-burn(tm) or Kiosk-burn(tm) recipe. Europe is not so stone age as you believe. In Sweden there are over 100,000 customers on 10Mbit and a LOT of customers on 100Mbit. I'm on a 2.3MBit SDSL here in Norway.

How much are they paid now.... from everyone downloading the game.

When you purchase games from stardock.net (www.galciv.com) / totalgaming.net you can copy the game anywhere, yet I still see those guys doing business and being prosperous.

Old fashioned habits by the suits, including copywrong viruses on titles and distribution of the titles in a "region/zone" way, such as with DVDs, Console Titles and some pc games (Most famous example Freelancer which took 4 months for a Euro Release... thats 4 months of being available on the internet).

If they want to stay in the game - they have to adapt.

They dont need security - they need AVAILABILITY and RELIABILITY at a PRICE PREMIUM the PUBLIC CAN AFFORD and WANT TO CONTRIBUTE WITH.

Heck, Why not sell the game for 29.95$ as internet download, charge another 10$ for the HIGH RESOLUTION TEXTURE PACK.

I hope they release a new demo.. sometime soon.

If the game gets to old.. nboody will buy it regardless of how many patches they release.

The SERIOUSLY BLEW IT with this release. If I was the suit in charge of this I would have commited Sepukku/Harakiri.

The download speeds from those 30k torrents was max in/out.

I cant understand why they did not choose to distribute the game the same way.. it would save them a lot in bandwidth, packaging, .. everything.

Maybe they should have considered RELEASING THE GAME AT THE SAME TIME WORLDWIDE.

If people are able to download 50.000 copies of a bittorent seed, surely the POSSIBILITY OF COMPUTER STORES EQUIPED WITH A CDBURNER "RACK" BEING ABLE TO SELL A NON-BOXED COPY OF THE GAME to those wanting, or EVEN A "GAME KIOSK" you just select the game you want to purchase from, put in your credit card and *poff* out pops the cd's with packaging.

NO need for Shelves and boxes, saving the environment immensely.

The current distribition method of game titles is Ancient and Useless.
