I must say 24 is awfully good this season.

24ST
The various shootouts have been good. It's been damn suspenseful too. I've previosuly only watched the show sporadically (sometimes it just got too silly or too boring) but this season has been downright awesome so far. Jack setting off that guy's suicide vest with his cellphone was mighty clever. And the tricky shootout at the end of the last night's episode was one of the cooler action seens I've ever seen on TV.

Here's the way I see it. Even though I've only tried pot two times in my life, and that was over 20 years ago, I wouldn't have a problem with it being legalized... and that's it, no other drugs. Look, we already have a benchmark of what's acceptable in our society - alcohol and tobacco - and even though it's obvious pot has its dangers (like alcohol and tobacco), I don't believe they're any worse, just different (maybe less). Meth, cocaine, etc., aren't even in the same ballpark when it comes to the damage they can do, it's just common sense to me.
From Empire Falls by Richard Russo:
"He still smoked a little dope, Miles knew; and probably even had a small marijuana patch out in the woods, like half his rural Maine neighbors."
Legalization (or at least decriminalization) of marijuana makes sense if you do some looking (that you probably shouldn't) under rocks and in dark corners. I've come to realize that many, including both teens and adults, smoke pot that you would not expect. There's plenty of pot-head parents in my neighborhood as well as a few folks who toke up in their backyards that you really wouldn't think so. Hell, I'm aware of at least a few teachers at the local high school who smoke pot. And if you take a step backwards through time, you'll encounter A TON of people who 'tried', 'experimented with, or smoked up all the time, back in the 60s and 70s. Marijuana usage runs deep in our culture, just like alcohol does globally.

My economics teacher brought up a good point. With the underground epidemic of marijuana usage and the blackmarket it creates, what would happen if (a) we legalized marijuana or (b) we put much stricter control upon it? We might see some rather quirky economic fallout in either direction.

So, do I support legalization? I'm undecided. It makes sense to legalize marijuana because of the aforementioned factors and because it seems, to the best of our knowledge, to be less dangerous than alcohol (although more, better studies need to be done). However, my personal beliefs make the decision difficult. I am opposed to all forms of self-dillusion ranging and that includes pretty much all drugs (cigarettes, alcohol, pot, meth, etc.). It just doesn't make sense to me. My feelings on the subject would fill volumes and, at some point, probably will. The Blue's News message board is not the place for these volumes.

Despite this, I see the benefits of marijuana legalization, although at this time, I see no reason I should support legalizing any harder drugs like crack or herion.

Looks like they had to look really hard to find something negative to say at all.
I'm much more worried about the game's system requirements. I think it might be a beast.

Uhh. You are young. The style fluffy dice symbolizes (at least around here and everywhere else I lived) is probably not the style you want to be projecting.

I have owned one car in my life. Not bad considering I'm 17.

That car is Yoshi. He is a 1991 Honda Civic Wagon. He is quite a nice vehicle, running without trouble at 137k miles. He handles most everything although he doesn't particularly like steep hills. Most significantly, he gets around 37mpg. A wagon! 37 MPG!

I don't know much about him because he is a recent acquisition but I suspect few repairs have been done to him. I suspect he will rust away before he stops his running. Poor Yoshi

20. Radio... Dec 31, 2005, 21:45 Bunko

Where else can I listen to the likes of Rush
Ewwww...

That being said, I have at least one decent radio station, called EQX, that's out of Manchester, VT and Albany, NY. It's an alternative station that's completely independent of Clear Channel or other such conglomerates and is, unfortunately, a rarity these days. It's plays mostly good music. About 3/4 of the DJs are good. It tends to play a lot of the same songs but commercials are rare and very short when they do occur, so I can hardly complain.

I don't really listen to most talk radio. NPR on occasion. Most of it is junk anyways.

Ubuntu -- based off of Debian; not used commercially much, but popular amongst the free software purists. It's probably the best of the desktop replacements, and there's a lot of free (to you; paid for by the Ubuntu foundation) tech support.

You can actually request for the Ubuntu people to send you CDs of their distro (LiveCD and install sets) absolutely free. You have to wait probably 2 weeks but hey, free stuff is free stuff. They're doing a really good thing with this open source Ubuntu distribution. I have not personally tried out the operating system (those free disks are collecting dust on my desk) but I plan to in the future because I've certainly heard some good things.

The word is "cohabitation." Kind of generic, but it's often used for this kind of arrangement between two people.
Hmmph!

I had forgotten about that word. It's sorta an odd, sterile word so I feel a little bit better

57. The Year In Pictures Dec 21, 2005, 21:18 Bunko

Quite a good set of pictures. Maybe not quite as good as Time's but pretty darn close. It wouldn't work in Firefox for me, so if you're a deviant like myself, fire up IE.

My favorites were the picture in Iraq of the sunset reflection, the picture of the Buddhist monks (probably my favorite), the shot of the man walking through the rain in the reader's choice section and the red barn photo.

I do have point of contention: why does everyone always vote for the patriotic flag-draped coffin pictures? All the pictures of the year have the readers as picking that as the best. Most of the pictures haven't been that good. The MSNBC one here even bordered on bad, yet the readers picked it as the top picture.

1. RIP Dec 17, 2005, 00:10 Bunko

John Spencer will be sorely missed. I've only ever seen him on the West Wing but his performances on the show were damn good. He was probably the best actor on the show and I'd consider him one of the finer actors I've ever seen. He's also a great guy, from what I've read.

What a tragedy. I think they should just cancel The West Wing. It's gone downhill since Sorkin left. Now it will be without a soul.

Despite his low-key personality, I'm really going to miss him.
