I decided to give it another go over the summer. I picked up the Total Experience (SWG+2 expansions) and gave it a good two months worth of play. Basically, it boils down to this for me:
-The space portion of the game can be fun at first, but after destroying several thousand ships a long, long, long process, it isn't fun any more.
-The combat upgrade has been a mixed bag so far as the player base is concerned. I didn't think it changed much for me other than maybe making it easier for folks to transition from SWG to WOW or Everquest 2.
-Well, the grind to Jedi is very tedious indeed, although there are a few thousand dedicated souls who have already done it (pretty much anyone who is still playing and has been over the past 3+ months). The system to become a jedi is in place to make sure that it takes a minimum of 8 weeks (if you are very lucky) to be able to start the grind to Jedi since you must become a Jedi Initiate before hand. Think of it as a two tier process. First you go through the Force Senstive trials (which are supposed to change every 2 weeks or so and you can only do one trial per that time period) and after 6 trials you become a jedi initiate. Then the grind comes back into play until eventually you kill enough critters/npc's (most likely in a grinding group of sorts since it would take even longer solo) until you reach the plateu of Jedi Master.
-In turn, play through KOTOR if you want to play as a Jedi because don't expect anyone to be impressed that you wasted 3 months of your life to be part of probably the largest player class in SWG. Face it, at least 80% of the people who play are playing to be a Jedi. Or go play Jedi Outcast/Academy online if you want to duel people properly with lightsabers.
-Well, it can be fun for a few months, and that is more than you get with most games out for the PC now-a-days.
