Okay, let's see. The original developers of X-COM: UFO Defense are not working on any UFO game. The Gollop brothers just finished a turn-based game for the GBA called Rebelstar: Tactical Command: http://www.gamespot.com/gba/strategy/rebelstartacticalcommand/index.html

Then there is UFO: Extraterrestrials, a turn-based game being developed by fans of X-COM. It will be out in Q1 2006 most likely.

This one is the sequel to UFO: Aftermath, and it isn't as close to the X-COM formula as UFO: ET, though heavily inspired by it. Unlike Aftermath, Aftershock has base management, buildings you can enter and so on.

@Creston: Heretic! There is no such thing as "Too many UFO games"!

@DanL: You also have another option for playing the original UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-COM: UFO Defense) here: http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=3696

Our "friends" over at Atari still owns the rights for X-COM. I guess they'll be hugging them close to their chest until they die

As for Aftershock, I am fairly confident it will be much better than Aftermath. They have added base management, prone, inside buildings and much more that fans missed. Take a look at the latest preview here, as it is very good: http://www.pro-g.co.uk/previews/pid/123/131/

For a little X-COM fix you should try the new beta of Invasion2021: Last Line of Defense

like turn based gameplay?
Nope. If you're looking for that I guess Silent Storm and the likes are better choices. Aftershock will use an improved version of the S.A.S. system from Aftermath. Even though I too prefer TB I think the system will be fine. With the added tactical options like prone, crawl, snipe from rooftops and so on it may end up great in fact. Time will tell.

I had the pleasure of meeting Robert in the Czech Republic just before Christmas, and he's a very cool guy

Regarding Aftershock, I am fairly confident it will be quite an improvement over Aftermath. They've added quite a few features that people missed and improved most aspects of the game really.

The official sequel to SS, Sentinels, has a virtually impossible mission very early on. I did feel a bit ripped off by that because it made the game so painful I couldn't be bothered going back.
There are ways to turn off AI in this mission to make it doable. Don't know what they were thinking with that UN bomb mission!

So is this an unofficial sequel to SS?
It started out as a modification for S2 in fact. But somewhere along the road Nival decided to sign up the mod as a full game. Probably due to it's high quality and potential. The sci-fi elements are not present in this game, so it's not really a sequel. It's similar in setting, but a bit more realistic.

Well, both JoWooD and Nival said they would like to do Silent Storm 2 some time ago. At present though, they have more than enough other stuff on their minds :). With Nightwatch (using a modified S3 engine I believe), Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and the other games they do, it will not happen just yet. Maybe after the English version of Nightwatch hit the streets.

There is also the mod for S2, Hammer & Sickle, that is now turning into a game. Can't remember when it's to hit the streets, but it's getting closer.

Anyway, enjoy S3! I haven't gone through it myself yet because I'm very pressed for time these days. It's as hard as it's good! We'll hear it soon enough if Nival decides to do Silent Storm 2.

How's things in RL? Good to have the comments up again here!

A company with so many excellent PC games behind them as Nival shouldn't be used for producing dumbed down games for consoles

UPDATE: I just got this reply from Nival: "Keep calm, PC branch will stay intact :)". Thank God!

If you are REALLY impatient, you can order it from http://www.gogamer.com . Just search for Silent Storm, and you'll see the gold edition import. It contains both Silent Storm and Silent Storm: Sentinels. As far as I know they aren't going to release Sentiels as a separate game, so you have to buy gold.

For Europe, you can order it from for instance: http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=PC&title=181348

A few comments. First off, the "official" short version of the names are S2 for Silent Storm and S3 for Silent Storm: Sentinels. Not that it matters all that much, but SS gives some people rather negative associations

As for the release in Europe, it's been very quiet. I recently realized Silent Storm Gold had S3 in it as well.

As for the release of S3 in the US, it will probably take some time. JoWooD is working with it at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't released over there until Christmas, or the start of next year.

As for where to get Silent Storm Gold, I'd recommend http://www.play.com/play247.asp?searchtype=allproducts&searchstring=silent+storm+gold&page=search for most European countries (cheap, and shipping included in the prise), and for the US some people have used http://www.gogamer.com. Read more http://forum.nival.com/eng/showthread.php?t=27084.

As for how good S3 is, I've played it for a while and REALLY enjoyed it. It's like a super polished version of S2 with some very nice features added. I have seen no scifi stuff so far (didn't like the PKs and stuff in S2 myself), but I think there may be some at the end. You can read a good review at http://www.actiontrip.com/reviews/silentstormsentinels.phtml.

And so the series took yet another nosedive, please for the love of god guys just cough up for the Silent Storm engine.

I was also horrified when I saw that, but Martin Klima of ALTAR called of the alarm. It's just a little misunderstanding

youd think they would be able to listen to all the people that said it was a peice of shit and should have been much more like x-com... considering 90% of people who saw the game said that
I would suggest you read the interview we'll have online today or tomorrow. The sequel will be much closer to what people wanted from the first one. I'll send the link to Blue's when it's up.
