Seeing as they are (i think) using the same engine for freedom force vs the 3rd r, its possible that it has exposed a problem with the engine which they are taking the time to carefully plug.

With all these publishers closing I am reminded of the death of the film studios a while back, perhaps what we are seeing is not the end of pc gaming but infact something much much worse - the triumph of the LCD.

The interview can be summed up as - "Ripping off enter the matrix' gameplay was fucking stupid, but prince of persia - sands of time sold well..."

Hell, creston is right on the mark here...
They stated about 10x10^10 times in the first opening minutes that their power grid was being massivly over loaded to support the delta labs projects - so there you go an ingame justification for why it was so dark, of course that was in those little log PDA things that no one read because doom 3 had no story.

How about something new, like say - a hybrid of neverwinter nights and guildwars, allowing people to congregate in the hub, join games and have new content streamed to them, including a useful set of tools and persistant characters between offical dev created quests with scripted sequences rather than DM's.

interestingly none of the uk etailers seem to be carrying the special edition for preorder, at least none that I am aware of is this likely to be a US only deal ?

As far as skill goes in shooters it might be worth considering the transfer of the various skills . For example rocket jumping as a skill only really applies to games with rockets in it... My point is CS is popular because it relies on some pretty generic skills, aim with hitscan weapons, team communication and knowing the level - it doesn't have much more to it than that, games like tribes / desert combat are much more specialised, being an ace dc chopper pilot won't help you to ski.

Its worth noting as well that software patents are on an idea rather than the code itself which is already protected by standard copyright infringement legislation. I work for a company that uses and develops open source software and the current move in the EU towards US style laws is deeply worrying - it effectivly sets up an anticompetative market where something like the amazon patent on delivery of goods where the recievers address is unknown to the sendee can limit trade, inovation and development.

Some of us crazy people think that socialism AND capitalism can be a good thing, the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Every system has problems - if it was all so black and white every country would be run in the same wonderfull way and we wouldn't have time to play computer games because we'd be too busy dancing hand in hand.

Lets start a cult, we'll believe in the mystic year when Planescape - Torment, System Shock and Fallout all get decent sequals.

As I understand it Steam's subscription stuff is a way of enabling developers to charge for content but doesn't necessarily mean they will - for example that pirates MMOG that will be distributed via steam. HL2 appears to be on a direct purchase model with the steam system primarily an anti piracy measure, its a massive over statement but its possible that for all their problems Steam and similar models could be the 'savior' of PC gaming.

I hope to god they cut the stealth levels this time round, and as other people have said RTCW/ET both raised the stakes as far as multiplayer goes.

Strange, people complain about publishers sucking the soul out of their favorite games, about huge multinationals forcing recycled console pap on us and assuming we really want another sims expansion or dear hunter 15. Valve are creating another channel, it has different issues, different bugs but it will shake the market up and hopefully lead to better things.

Actually in alot of ways the co-op campaign seemed less linear and better though out than the 'one long tunnel' design ethos used in single player.
