I don't think EA even has the rights to System Shock anymore. I'm having a bit of a hard time finding links, but I'm sure I've read in a couple of places that EA doesn't have it. They can't make another SS game on their own even if they wanted to.

Another preload and the game still hasn't gone gold? Wonder what they are waiting for.. and how much earlier people will be able to play the game from the net as opposed to buying it at the store.

IIRC the game is "done" already, but they had to send it off to Vivendi for QA testing. Once they get the OK from the testers (assuming there aren't any major problems) the game will go gold. They can start the preloading now because the models/music/etc aren't going to change between now and the release, and if they do it'll probably only be minor changes. Also, if what I've been reading is true, the Steam download version will be available the same time the boxed version is made available, so the only advantage the download will have over the boxed version is the fact that you don't have to go down to the store to get a copy.

Yeah, that statement struck me as odd too.... HL1 was based on the Quake engine, but HL2 is built from scratch.

Not to mention how poorly nvidia cards performed at one time because of valves insistance on using 24 bit color mode and not 32 bit (the only game since the original Baldur's Gate to not support 32bit color).

Umm, I think you have your facts a bit screwed up. That whole 24-bit / 32-bit deal has to do with internal shader precision PER CHANNEL (and there are 4 channels), and has nothing to do with 24-bit/32-bit color output. ATI's cards can process shaders with 96-bit precision (24+24+24+24 for red, green, blue, and alpha) whereas nVidia's cards do use 128-bit precison (32+32+32+32 for rgba). In the end, there's hardly a noticable difference between the two, but for obvious reasons, ATI's cards have an advantage because 96-bit precision is faster than 128-bit precision.

I see it as making up to ATI users, rather than rewarding them... loads of people bought the Radeon/HL2 bundle and found out not long after that the game would be delayed for an entire year. If I were Valve, I'd do the same as well.

The 'C' also differentiates it from console RPGs, which are usually japanese style, whereas CRPGs usually refer to D&D style RPGs found mostly on PC.

Only way you'll get the demo running is if you upgrade your video card. Yes, Halo does run on MX cards, but the shader effects in that game weren't critical to gameplay. In DX2, I believe all shadows are done via shaders.... and without shaders, you can't have shadows.... and without shadows, it directly affects the experience.
