Same reason I don't like Xbox Marketplace. You pay for the system, you pay for the Live subscription, you pay for the games and on top of it, they now want you to pay AGAIN for extra content that should have been in the disc in the first place.

Broadband isn't free either - you also have to pay for your cable or DSL service, which in many cases isn't cheap (as cheap as dialup). Granted, rich folks can afford all this, but those lower on the scale will not be able to compete in-game if you have to buy game content. IMO this bastard doesn't deserve any sales if the entire game is based on greed from the start.

Thanks, those guides are great, Creston! I've been mostly puttering around in X3, getting used to the controls and stuff.

I can say with certainty:

The starting ship they give you, where you start as a trader, is a joke. (It's one of the plotless games) I have not managed to destroy one ship yet, and I've been picking on the ones that look easy.

A GeForce 4 Ti4400 is totally unsuitable for this game. I've got it running at 1024x768 with shaders and textures set to low, and it's still kinda choppy. I've got an AMD Athlon64 3200+ and 1 gig of RAM, BTW.

I have to remember there's a notepad in the game. I've got a hold full of textiles that I seem to have bought "high" and everyone is paying "low" I'm glad I didn't name my character "Jim Cramer" because at this point I'm certainly not making "Mad Money" but it's only my first time out.

Even with graphics set to low it's still miles ahead of Derek's games in the looks dept. ;)

and a big BOOYAH! to Creston and Ray

alright guys - last night i finished my first project with "The Movies"....

OMG THAT WAS AWESOME! YOU ROCK! Two thumbs up!

I loved the voices, and there were plenty of laughs. Can't wait to see your next films. Are you going to do Ninja & Ape in the same vein as buddy movies (Lethal Weapon, etc.)? That would kick ass. Great job!

Initial verdict: Extremely frustrating.

Instead of designing your scenes around your movie, you're forced to design your movie around the scenes the game gives you.

Don't get me wrong, there's a shitload of potential here. But it's not something you can easily hop into and back out of in 5 minutes.

Thanks a bunch for that review. While a bit disappointing, I'm hopeful that a patch or two can take care of the big problems, and the mod community will work out a way to do other stuff. Guess we'll have to see what develops (pun intended... film... develops... oh never mind).

The web page is not updated yet. The upgrade was through the browser's own auto-updater. From Firefox, try going to Help -> Check For Updates (in the menu bar). That should trigger the browser update.

Been wanting to play a space game for a while, so I went and ordered X3 from gogamer.com today (basically Ray and Creston sold it, shouldn't they get a commission?). I'll wait until there's a sale on The Movies before I get that... plus I want to hear from nin what the sandbox mode is like. I just hope my rig (Athlon 64 3200+, GeForce 4 Ti 4400, 1 gig RAM) can handle it...

Oh yeah, I must not forget to pick up Space Rangers 2.
