Went ahead and snagged an imax ticket for next week. Thinking 3 times will be enough until it's released on blu. :)

Seeing it for a third time tonight. We have these MJR "Epic" screens around us that are actually bigger than IMAX. They use 2 4K projectors.

Just amazing. You'd think after the I dunno, 100th thing launched into space they would have decided to make some kind of international law to say that you must have a plan to remove space debris for everything you launch. At the very least after the cold war.

Sure it would to the cost of something already expensive as hell, but unless someone has a very clever way of dealing with space junk, I'd imagine it would have been a lot cheaper.

It isn't necessary. Even with 20,000 pieces up there the odds of hitting one are very very tiny. Take 20,000 cars and spread them evenly across the surface of the planet... it's more likely to encounter one of them randomly then it is the space junk which have another dimension of spread.

Sure some of the orbital routes are more common than others but scientists can adjust and use slightly newer/different paths. Also all of these things are tracked. The really tiny debris would be more problematic if it's not being tracked but also less likely to make contact with something.

A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are masterpieces. The plot progresses naturally from character motivations. There are no blatant prequel imitations or out-of-the-Blue coincidences the way there are in TFA.

You know why this is right?

He seems to imply that it was turned up for the demo and that it normally wouldn't be like that. All though that raises the question, who the fuck thought that would be a good idea. Or maybe it actually was like that but they're already planning on fixing it.

he should also poop often and die forever - but he wont because HES A VIDEO GAME

I realise this is a video game; my idea was for it to be a *better* video game.

Pooping really should be a feature in more games though.

i'm trying to think of any time, ever, that a "fan community" hasn't been pissed about something they're used to changing.

or really just any human, anywhere. at any time.

Change is scary! Example:

Valve-run servers are now the most widely accepted way to play the game, and every time the map ends an automatic vote pops up for players to vote on the next map. Guess what maps wins +50% of the time?

de_dust2

Even if the current map is dust2, it usually wins the vote again despite a majority of users wishing to play another map.

So dust2 loads again, about +60% of the server clears out, and 1 to 4 mins later the server is full again. And when the map ends, another vote comes up. Guess what map wins +50% of the time?

de_dust2

60% of the server clears out. People join again because in casual modes a player CANNOT de-select any particular map. And the de_dust2 train with a minority vote keeps choo-chooing along...

I understand the natural human instinct to avoid change, especially when learning a new game. But map voting occurs hundreds (thousands?) of times a minute across all Valve servers, and it's obvious to anyone who stays in a server, the community DOESN'T know what's best for itself.

And apparently the programmers administering CSGO don't know either.

From what I've seen Dust 2 does tend to get the majority of the votes even if you add up all of the other votes together. It really doesn't take much to get people to switch it up usually either. Just some guy yelling "vote mirage!" right away tends to do it.

yes. these are not the people who made cs. these are not the people who made cs a success. cs gameplay has matured into a very static state over almost 20 years of real world usage. behind no closed doors should changes be made. this was like changing the rules of chess. cs is that significant to electronic gaming.

The original creators haven't been involved with Counter-Strike since 2001.
Do you think changes haven't been made since then? You realize this is the fourth game right? And those 4 had/have been constantly changing right?

(also CS is just over 16, not quite 20 yet, I know you said "almost" though)

Why didn't they just call it Minecraft Servers.

Because anyone can run a Minecraft server.
Minecraft Realms are the easy mode way. Kids were bugging their parents to make them a Minecraft server and parents didn't know how the fuck to do that and didn't want to spend all day reading wikis so they put in a paid easier option.

When you start Minecraft up there are three options: singleplayer, multiplayer (type an IP in), and Realms.

Still you're not right. There's no way, even with unlimited funds and manhours that you can complete the game being shown in that trailer (assuming you mean the game, with game mechanics, and not just a movie, which I think you do) in a year. If you believe that... you don't know what you're talking about. Plain and simple.

Are there games that could be completed in that amount of time? Of course. But not that one. Not that complexity. Not that level of fidelity. And again, I'm not a fan of this game, this is purely from the perspective of software. Hell screw the assets, I'm telling you the code wouldn't be right in that amount of time.

Sepharo, I'm not talking about the whole freakin' game in a year or year plus six months...I'm not crazy. What I'm saying is that there should have been either the equivalent of where we are NOW, ie. one free-roam map, Arena Commander, the Hangar and ArcCorp and Tutorial Map, in one year to a year and six. I don't think that's asking too much. In the video I was talking about, you see the beginning of Squadron42, the single-player component. You arrive on the ship, you get escorted around by an AI and then find yourself at the bridge or flight ops or whatever. You have some AI's talking and walking around, chit-chatting. In THREE+ years, THIS is all he has to show for the single-player to the public! A walk around. And even then, the AI were clipping into the scenery and the sound was off in a lot places. (Probably because of the positional audio). This is unacceptable after three years and nearly $100 MILLION!

I never said that the whole thing should be done by now or in a year. That's crazy. I know it's not possible. But a level and walk-around with a hangar and maybe a tutorial, in a year? Yeah, for multiple studios and $100 million? Yeah, definitely...

=-Rigs-=

The kind of polish you're expecting in a demo / alpha whatever is not how things work. They've released what they feel comfortable releasing. Issues like clipping into the scenery and sounds bugs will probably be the last things to be addressed. They are problems that exist because they are difficult to fix. If your point is that they should have more done than this after 3 years, fine, you're probably right about that. But to say they should be at this point by 1 year, no.

This should have been done at the end of year one

literally impossible, stop talking

Just because your expectations and standards have been pushed so far down by year after year of mediocre triple-AAA releases as to be microscopic at this point does not mean mine are! I was around to see what a real developer with heart, drive and vision could do in a three to four year time frame. Newer 'gamers' are so beaten down they seem to be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome! Just good enough is the new 'Triple A'-game. The only place where innovation and design are law is with Indies and history texts of the video game industry. Don't tell me it couldn't be done in a year. It could. If he wanted it done, it could have been done. He didn't. He's never been able to recapture that spark that started him with Wing Commander 1 and 2. I'm curious if he had anything to do with Privateer at all because that game was genius. Then again, like Strike Commander, it took almost forever for it to come out.

We typically see tech demos and whole single level concepts by the one year mark. Is this video not something like that? I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around.

The crunch is industry standard now. This is why I say that it could be done in a year. Because a good amount of development is done right before and during the crunch. If that work was spread out over the first year instead of the last six months, look what could have been accomplished. That's my reasoning for saying it. So, you tell me why it couldn't be done in a year, a year and a half MAX?

=-Rigs-=

No he was right, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not a fan of this game. I don't think these guys are ever going to complete what they've set out to do... But getting out what they did in the amount of time that they did, buggy mess it may be, is pretty impressive. Throwing more programmers at a project like this doesn't help. Also they aren't cutting corners, these are complex systems and they're doing them the hard way as far as I can tell. This isn't making a 2D game, cookie cutter assets, borrowed physics, algo generated, or any other normal time/money saving effort. Even simple games and developers who use shortcuts take years to make this kind of progress.

"I didn't see any gameplay, except for the ability to walk around."

Assuming I'm not misunderstanding, you're talking about alpha 2.0 right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQzX2xjGoM8
There is a lot more going on there than just walking around a hangar... Isn't that where they were 2 years ago? Look at the milestone post made earlier in these comments.

Oh I didn't realize you were being specific to weapons.
Pricing on weapons and armor is different.
I want to say total ammo capacity is different.
In casual you automatically get the armor and defuse kits but you need to buy them in competitive.

I have to completely disagree with Xero, nothing he said actually has anything specifically to do with 'eSports' or any sports at all.

Any/every "game" or "sport" can and does change the rules and players always have one choice, adapt or die. You are always subject to the whims of the governing body or "game developers". Rulesets in every game or competition in existence are constantly adjusted to eliminate deficiencies or exploits. There are positions, players, and "plays" in every sport that have either evolved or become irrelevant over time because of rule changes. The players who adapt the quickest with the highest skill level are simply the elite players... the ones people will pay to watch do it.

Could it have been a PR move? Maybe, but do you really think Valve needs PR for CS for some bizarre reason? They spend practically $0 marketing one of the most popular games on Steam on other media and it continues to be ridiculously successful. CS:GO IS their testbed, there is no beta realm and they don't distinguish between "competitive" and "casual" in any way for any patch. They merely released and adjusted a weapon, it's not a trap :p It was only even newsworthy here because of how laughably bad they messed up the damage.

I pretty much agree with your whole post but that underlined part is just not correct. Read the patch notes.

I can only assume it's because they were being dicks, I can't think of a rational reason to do that.

A total guess, but maybe the cheats were working in MP as well and this was just the quick and dirty way to fix that?
