Reading the article really has me wondering - does a pirate really say "Oh well, since there's no day 1 crack I'll just buy it instead."? I just don't see it happening myself.

The fact that the voice actors are asking for more than developers get (royalties, limits on work time) in my opinion serves to accentuate how little developers and designers get, not how greedy voice actors are. No, I don't really feel sorry for them, but what they are asking for doesn't sound unreasonable. I just don't think they are going to get it.

As long as Blizzard keeps making good games, I don't really care what they do. Just tighten up the story-writing - it's gotten noticeably worse as of late. Diablo 3s story was 'meh' and StarCraft 2's was pants. Particularly the last chapter. But those cutscenes though - WOW!

You need to think about YouTubers in your game design and not just expect to be able to pay someone to make a video and have greatness follow"

WTF?? Think about Youtubers in your design?! That sounds like terrible advice for developing a good game.

I am not interested in the game, but that trailer did an admirable job of recreating the beach invasion scene from Saving Private Ryan. That scene is still to this day one of the most affecting scenes Hollywood has ever put out to me.

Diablo 3 at launch was an absolute travesty. The auction house, and the way loot drops were designed specifically around it, was a disgusting display of greed, arrogance, and cynicism. Fast forward to now after tons of fixing and updating and Diablo 3 is a good game. I've put a lot of time into it. It's a shame Wilson and company screwed it up so badly in the beginning.

I've played about 8 hours of the LW2 and it is a fantastic mod. To start you get some really cool new classes (my favorite is the awesome close quarters Shinobi) and new perks to choose from when leveling up your soldiers. There are three options to choose from when a soldier gains a promotion so there is more customization options for individual soldiers. Another new feature is "squads". Your soldiers can be assigned to squads that can be sent out on missions as a unit instead of selecting soldiers individually.

Another big change is the "infiltration" mechanic in which you assign soldiers to initiate an infiltration when new missions are discovered instead of launching the mission immediately. The higher a squad's infiltration in a mission area, the easier the mission will be. And trust me, you'll want a high infiltration (at least 100% though you can go higher) otherwise you can easily get overwhelmed by a huge number of enemies on a mission. You'll want to recruit a lot more soldiers than you did in vanilla to fill out multiple squads and fill in gaps when soldiers invariably get injured or killed.

The world map where you contact resistance forces in the various regions is the same, but a lot has changed in the game's strategic layer. Firstly, you are deprived of much of the information on the world map that you were allowed to see in vanilla XCOM2. Dark events are hidden until you have gained a lot of intel in the regions in which they are occurring and you cannot see the rate at which the Avatar project is advancing (or decreasing, depending on your mission successes). Secondly, you now manage the resistance bases in each region, and you gain more benefits from that region as you increase the strength of a region's resistance through successful operations. You can assign the resistance members to tasks such as recruitment, procurement of supplies, or gathering intel to uncover new missions. I believe there is even a way to entirely wrest control of a region from the Aliens, presumably through successful missions and defense of resistance facilities in the region. One of the assignable tasks for members of the resistance is "hide", which certainly means that Advent will launch attacks in the regions where you have had success in gaining control of the region.

There are new weapon tiers (I have just started researching Laser technology) and lots of new research options. Squads can be much bigger now (I took nine troops on one mission) but I'm not sure what the max size is. There are also new alien types (I've met a couple of new ones but I'm sure there are a lot more I haven't seen yet).

Those are the big things I've noticed so far. I will say that the game is still punishing and it is even more important to use sound tactics on missions than it was in vanilla. All in all I love this mod so far, and I will be playing tons of it in the next week or so.

I still can't shake the feeling that Nintendo is going to fuck this up. There's a lot of negative buzz around the cost of what many would consider necessary peripherals and what little is known about the online service, and there's plenty of room for Nintendo to generate a lot more with more of the fuckery Nintendo is known for.

Yes I saw the linked image. I found it interesting, but I also noted that it didn't seem to include consoles from the handheld market. I mention this because if you analyze the advertising the amount of time the Switch is shown docked versus how much it is shown as a mobile device one could make the argument that Nintendo is marketing the device as a handheld first. Given the gaming environment in Nintendo's homeland Japan, where the trend is heavily weighted towards mobile gaming, that would seem fair.

Also, the list doesn't take into account that all consoles are not created equal. The PS4 at launch had better features and more raw power than the Xbox One and yet released $100 cheaper, giving Sony a great advantage early on in the generation for example.

You mention indie games, and I agree embracing that scene would be the single best move Nintendo could make to achieve relevancy and market penetration it needs to be competitive this generation. I also agree that marketing was the single biggest failure of Nintendo with the Wii-U, which really wasn't that bad of a system. I think the lack of really good first party franchise games was a huge failure too. Nintendo has shown in the past that it can be successful without much third party support, but it absolutely has to have good in-house games.

While I have some concerns, as you said Nintendo has been on point with their marketing, already correcting the biggest failure of the Wii-U generation, so there is cause for optimism. I just can't underestimate Nintendo's ability to make horrible decisions from time to time.

There's really no point in using logic with some of these people.

It's been established that $300 is expensive for a console. That you need 4 controllers to play with 2 people. That the new Zelda is shit. That it's normal for consoles to launch with games included. That it's normal for consoles to not charge to use their MP servers. That 2 controllers included with a new console "isn't good enough". That the innovations in the Switch are "technologically backwards". That the semi-short battery life of a portable console is worse than no batteries at all. That the internal storage of 32GB isn't big enough for games sold on cartridges.

Bunch of whiny twats if you ask me. You'd think of ALL new console launches, that the Nintendo one with a new Zelda game would at least bring a small bit of simple joy to gamers. Nope. Shit all over it. Garbage.

I'm not sure you're characterizing the viewpoints that may be counter to yours fairly. $300 is not too much for a console. It may, however, be a bit too much for a Nintendo console for some people in the context for what has been revealed thus far.

Zelda looks great - I haven't really seen anyone dumping on it the way you suggest. But you can't expect unbridled enthusiasm about a game (that no one really knows anything about) from a company that has made some really bad decisions with its most beloved franchises in recent years.

No one suggested that it's normal for all consoles to release with games bundled in at base retail price, but Nintendo is not in a normal position given the unique challenges it is facing releasing a new system in an environment in which they have been consistently one step behind other console manufacturers, have lost a huge amount of relevancy in the console space due to anemic third party support and barely a drip-feed of first party games to keep core fans satisfied, and are releasing it between two new, more powerful versions of current gen consoles that make the landscape far more competitive. I merely suggested that bundling something like the 1-2 mini game collection could give them a much needed boost similar to what happened with the Wii with the charming Wii Sports package.

As far as the 32GB system storage capacity, in the context of a system that purely runs cartridge based games that's probably enough, but presumably Nintendo is going to allow digital game downloads through their online service - frankly I think it would be crazy if they didn't - which, given the size of many games today suddenly renders that 32GB in a completely different light. 32GB is not a lot of space if you are talking downloadable games, and as has already been mentioned, the SD cards present another challenge in the form of much slower performance.

Lastly, on the subject of battery life, the first Switch commercial did show the console being used to play Skyrim on a plane. With under 3 hours of battery life purported for more demanding games it would have to be a fairly short flight, and given the unreasonablly high cost of the extra dock, I shudder to think what an external battery pack would cost.

My kids are grown now so I don't really have a dog in this fight the way I did in the Wii generation, but I have a huge nostalgic soft spot for Nintendo and would really like to see them succeed. And who knows? If Zelda and Mario turn out great, and they revive some of their dormant franchises like Monster Hunter and Metroid, I might even be interested in buying a Switch for myself. But I can't deny that there are some concerning indications that Nintendo may end up repeating a lot of mistakes that have really hurt them recently.

News Comments > Windows 10 Game Mode Plans
26. Re: Windows 10 Game Mode Plans Jan 14, 2017, 02:25 Prez

From a games storefront standpoint, Microsoft is abysmally clueless, as evidenced by the horrid GFWL in the past and now the amazingly awful Wingamestore. On the other hand from an OS standpoint, Microsoft has and continues to provide a solid ecosystem for gaming. I recently bought a mid-range gaming system that came with Windows 10 installed and it runs games excellently. Now I had no problem with my self-built Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 machines, but for the first time in a long time I went the prebuilt route and I'm happily surprised with Windows 10 for gaming. Which is why I'm pretty confident that Game Mode will basically work as advertised and be a decent boon for gaming.

Now if they just abandon their terribly misguided aspirations to turn PC gaming into a locked-down walled garden abomination and vastly improve how they sell and deliver games to the PC I'd be thrilled.

right, but the market has already spoken with regards to this, people are just fine paying $50 a year for multiplayer. That's an experiment that's almost 10 years old with xbox live.

People will pay for decent online functionality sure. Nintendo has not been great at all in the online space. As an aside the one free game per month that you lose at the end of the month is terrible in my opinion.

Also the Wii shipped with Wii sports, yes, that was also 10 years ago, and by no means the norm for this industry. The xbox doesn't ship with a game, the Playstation doesn't ship with a game. I can't remember the last time that was brought up as an issue, it's become standard practice.

This is true but Nintendo serves a pretty different market from Sony and Microsoft. There's a HUGE difference in how the Wii and Wii-U performed, mostly due to the Wii serving their market well while the Wii-U failed to do so. Shipping a very novel package such as Wii-Sports with the system was a huge part in getting the Wii off the ground and on its way to its huge success.

From my point of view regardless of what system it was originally intended for, a new Zelda game is a system seller. The problem is that while the Switch hardware is pretty cool and will presumably provide some pretty novel functionality for a lot of people, ultimately what makes or breaks any game system is the available software. In this day and age the online ecosystem also plays a role, and based on the reveal conference the Switch has some real problems in both the online and software arena. The Switch itself ships with nothing playable, which to me is a big mistake (not to mention the list of launch titles thus far revealed is woefully inadequate). Wii Sports was included with the Wii and gave the system purpose right out of the box. I have my doubts about whether people will be as keen on paying another $50 on top of the $300 for the system for the "1-2" package of games that looks VERY underwhelming.

Well it certainly looks fantastic, but in this day and age, with everything that has happened in the past, it boggles my mind that anyone would pre-order a game. I'll pick it up the day of release if it has a smooth launch with no performance problems.
