You would have to be a special kind of dumb to do this purposefully given how it is inevitable that someone will find out what you did and how little tolerance for it the community has shown in the past. As such, I would suspect that this is just another screw-up to throw onto the pile of screw-ups associated with this release.

I'm confused. You say that Fallout fans can never be pleased, but you are presumably a Fallout fan who thought the new direction that Bethesda took it in was cool. I'm a huge Fallout fan and I loved the move to 3D . Saying "you can't please {insert property name here} fans" is demonstrably false. You generally can't please property purists, and there are even exceptions to that. I've known purists who say that even though they didn't get the uniforms perfect, and they changed character 'X', they still actually liked it. Entire fandoms aren't toxic. The vocal minority often is. Why does this concept constantly bear repeating?

The why of the war is not the point, and as such Garland keeps politics out of it.

Great. I was worried about that. I know all too well that everyone is obsessed with politics, but when you include them it muddies the story for me. It's just distracting.

(Perhaps that also helps avoid polarizing could-be movie-goers?)

That's too much to hope for I think, but I tune the politically obsessed out anyway.

I saw '28 Days Later' and even though it has been copied a hundred times by now, I still think it remains one of the best zombie movies out there. Hopefully the director can bring the same new ideas to a different kind of "post apocalypse" movie.

Last of Us succeeded in large part because it did please the fans. The mistake everyone makes is believing that the myopic view of what the property should be expressed by neck beards who don't touch grass is what all of the fans think. So yeah, you have to please the fans, but you have to recognize that there is a section of the fandom who is just to be ignored. If you make a show that pleases the rest of the fandom, you get a massive word of mouth boost. The LoTR movies had some fans livid because Faramir was completely different in the book and they didn't include Tom Bombadil in the movie. But those were outstanding movies that pleased the majority of fans as well as having a more universal appeal. The less said about The Hobbit movies and Rings of Power the better. I'm a huge fan of The first 'Last of Us', and I was also a fan of the TV show. You can and should please the largest section of fans who matter. Keep discarding them and keep watching your shows fail.

I genuinely believe that Roberts really does believe he will deliver on all of his promises. He believes in this project, and he really wants to make an amazing space game. It's just that he is completely terrible at making games. It's not all about vision - you have to actually deliver something when you promise it in a timely manner. Those who know his 'Freelancer' development story know that his vision for what the game would be sounded way better than what was delivered. But if he hadn't been fired because he couldn't deliver what he promised we would still be waiting for 'Freelancer'.

Does anyone at all have anything positive to say about EA? To detail just how many times they have been an utterly reprehensible company would take a long, LONG time.

Argh, not the common fallacy that so many directors believe. When it comes to pleasing the fans, I am sorry but you have to please them. You're naming a show after the property they love for dog's sake. Why name the show "Fallout" if you're just going to make shit up without caring if it is true to the universe? The belief that straying from the narrative and major events put forth in the game at all will piss off all of the fans of a property is completely erroneous. You can; it has been done, and it has succeeded. Like every fandom, there is always going to be extreme grognards who will never be happy. If you're paying attention to them, you're doing it wrong.

I remember when the Doom movie came out. I was pretty excited. I didn't hate the casting, and they got a lot of the universe right. But then they changed "demons from hell going through a portal on Mars" to viral mutation. That is the core of the Doom experience. That isn't just a matter of trying but failing to please everyone; it was pissing over a property that has been established and revered for years because your ego tells you that you can do better. We didn't want high art, and we didn't want the nonsense you just threw in there, we just wanted you to make a fun movie that didn't insult us.

Saying "Well there's no way to please the fans, so I'm not going to even try" is a copout. You won't please all of the fans, but you can do a hell of a lot better than they did with Witcher (after season 2), Resident Evil, Rings of Power, or Halo. Those were downright insults to fans who wanted the spirit of the property respected, not a vehicle for you to push a message or just do whatever the hell you want. Barely caring enough about the world and the characters to even be bothered to familiarize yourself with it is just accepting a job for a paycheck.

I have no idea if the Fallout show will be good or if it will just be another failed vanity project that looks great but is terrible in every other way, but be careful of not caring what the fans think. That is the path to failure that so many directors have ventured down.

I actually thought about editing my original post to point out the clarification that you wrote Blue, but I then thought "yeah, but it's just Star Citizen. Everyone is going to laugh at it anyway." 😁

Except the fanbois. They aren't going to laugh.

On a side tangent, does no one care about making concise story headlines anymore?

Headline: "We shitpost to give you just enough information to generate enough rage that you'll click on it to read all about the bullshit that is mostly just trivial and then dump that in to an RSS feed so it gets picked up everywhere else because we really need to increase ad revenue or AI will take our jobs and we'll be asking if you want fries with that order."

Your headline might not even be the longest headline to a story that I have read, but it does encapsulate the problem I think. It has almost veered into the surreal how headlines are done. Personally, I am thinking when I see a preposterously long headline I don't need to even read the article. You put the paragraph-long cliff notes as the headline. I always thought that the trick was writing a headline that was concise and enticing enough to make you want to read it to find out the scoop. Guess I am out of touch on that too.

Yeah same here. I was aware that a thing called 'Neopets' existed at some point in history, but I could have easily believed it was a real-life plushie like a Furbee, not a videogame. Otherwise, all worthy inductees.

Many streamers on Twitch and YouTube generally just want views, so they will stream whatever seems popular that will garner lots of viewership. I'd imagine that many of them genuinely enjoy games that they try out in the process, but from what I can tell they will just go where they think the views are. That market is starting to have a correction so I doubt that things will continue as they are for too much longer.

Why waste money on Russian game companies when you could be spending it on games made by 4A and GSC? Both Ukrainian founded studios.

Also, it's more than the Russian government being dickheads. At least half the cybersecurity threats coming from Russia are from organized crime which is at least quasi-civilian. So the people of Russia don't get a free pass, either.

Okay, but they don't all get labeled as monsters either in my book. And I love games from dozens of countries, including Ukraine. The Stalker series is fantastic.
