To answer Julio, I would be for forced vaccination only in a pandemic that was serious enough. The problem is that there are so many anti vaccination loons out there now that this is becoming more and more likely - so much so that I consider it possible that I may see it in my lifetime. And when it happens, all of you tin-foil hat wackos will be the ones to blame for it so don't come bitching to me about lost freedoms.

If MACK's reviews piss you off I'd venture to say that you are taking them too seriously. He is actually a terrible reviewer, spending way to much time nitpicking and not enough time getting to all of the important points gamers look for in a review. But as entertainment - pure gold! It is especially fun to hear him have a meltdown over a game he hates because of bad mouse controls or other forms of consolitis.

The economy is doing well for white collar workers. If you have great experience and a degree or three it's a massive boom.

For the remaining 80% or more of the country, the rebound hasn't really happened.

This, exactly. For us blue collar workers things still suck. My wage barely keeps up with inflation, everything (except gasoline) is getting more expensive, and the income gap is widening steadily. It's a race to the bottom for the middle class. Me, I didn't vote and I doubt I ever will again in my lifetime. None of the clowns in DC - and no, not Democrats either; spare me the BS rhetoric about how things get better when they are in charge - give a shit about anything but keeping their job, living like royalty, and trading favors with corporate interests.

I would say that this last Republican landslide was not a function of people thinking that Republicans suddenly have an answer but a general disgust with the Democrats' inability to do anything about stagnant wages and the loss of higher wage jobs in favor of low wage jobs. As always, in elections, as the saying goes "it's the economy stupid!" In two years when the Republicans remind everyone how utterly ineffective they are the balance will swing back to the Democrats. It's the Political Pendulum of Futility.

Personally I think the whole "forced vaccination" idea is a non-starter. If herd immunity happens somewhere in the 90% range then my suggestion for a solution would be to get the number of conscientious objectors down under 10% via education and just the right amount of scare tactics.

I am all for vaccinations myself but I just don't get the hysteria over measles. All the children in my family including myself got it and it was just no big deal. I think I may have been born be for MMR vaccination was developed.

I'd be very surprised if the EFF got what it was asking for here. Both lawmakers and corporations have been becoming exceedingly hostile to consumers in their pursuit of the almighty dollar.

The game really starts to open up once you have gotten the majority of the higher level skills. I remain frustrated by the number of falling deaths I have suffered but overall I would say it is a really fun experience so far.

I wish publishers would stop making players rely on other players for a good experience. I hate multiplayer-centric games, so I didn't even give Titanfall a second glance.

Zombies really are the perfect enemy and a zombie apolocalypse really is the perfect backdrop to an open-world survival game, which is why it is repeatedly used and also why people like me keep buying them.

I agree Quboid I sympathize with the call for more diverse gender roles, but she took the angle of trashing games with sensible gender roles. By the examples she used and the context in which she used them, it came across that she is against ANY game in which the woman is portrayed as such things as strippers, hookers, victims of kidnapping and other crimes, etc. Consider that she titles her video headline as "Women as background decoration", meaning she is calling out any game that uses them as strippers or hookers regardless of how contextually accurate it may be. She also claims, based on a very specious use of a psychological phenomenon with no sourcing, the effect on the psyche that games with this sort of presentation of women is universal and unavoidable, which means ANY game that presents women this way, regardless of historical accuracy, is furthering misogynist attitudes in male gamers. This is patently, laughably untrue as any of us can attest to but more importantly it gives the lie to the claim that she only was seeking to have more games made that portray women in more dignified, meaningful roles. If that was truly all she was after I would have been behind her 100%.

Understand when I say attention "whore" I by no means using that term as slander against her gender; I view her as an attention whore as I am a New York Pizza whore.

Hey if the shoe fits... She is an attention whore, I really can't see any way to debate that fact. And the fact that she deliberately spins her data to make it look like men are the victimizers and women are the perpetual victims makes her a man-hater in my book.

19. Re: Dying Light Mod Tool Plans Feb 7, 2015, 10:45 Prez

I am enjoying Dying Light but it has me a bit frustrated. One big frustration is the night mode. I get that we are supposed to hide and run rather than stand and fight but it frustrates me. If the game gives a me an instant stealth kill (the snap the neck from behind by pressing "F" one) why can't I kill the nighttime baddies if I sneak up on them? (The ones that look like they were ripped right out of STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl I mean...). IS there any way to kill them? The weapons also don't seem as meaty as the ones in Dead Island too.

Of course it could just be me. My life is sucking MAJOR ass right now so maybe I am just letting what should be minor annoyances at worst get to me.

I meant agree with my original point, that overall Sarkeesian is not some noble crusader but an attention-whoring hack, not on one singular point. We can agree on specific details while staying at opposite ends of the opinion spectrum.

As I said Beremot, all of this stuff was hashed out as nauseum. I sincerely doubt if I were to pick apart her videos piece by piece (as I and others have done already in other threads) and show you exactly where she was being disingenuous or misleading you would suddenly start agreeing with me. You are way too invested in your opinion for that. Me, I am still waiting for someone to prove not that sexism exists in games, because it obviously does, but that is something that is worth worrying about because it isn't altogether a very big issue in my view and it is inherently self-fixing as society changes and becomes less douchey to women as a whole. Plus there are plenty of games that treat women with respect and dignity and in fact give them leading and meaningful roles, rendering Ana Sarkeesian's entire raison d'etre completely moot.

And while we are on the subject you may want to be careful about throwing around the "following the herd" accusations when someone poses an argument contrary to yours like you dismissively (and rather rudely) did with Redmask when there is no way you can make that case without knowing more about the person. Lest you be forced to accept that Sarkeesian has done nothing but tailor the modern feminist talking points to apply specifically to games anyway. Just because my beliefs very occasionally line up with those of conservative nutjobs on the radio doesn't make me a "ditto-head".

She is a man-hating feminazi. Period.

Looks like you have the whole thing all sewed up and there's no reason to discuss it any further.

Your "man-hating feminazi" argument is so ironclad, it would be a shame if you didn't share it with the wider world.

I think you should present it to Harvard. I'm sure they'll find it as convincing as I do, and rescind Sarkseesian's award.

Well it's sewn up in my mind anyway. Harvard doesn't mean anything to me, especially when they hand out silly awards so willy-nilly. I have given her every opportunity of convincing me differently but she has only further cemented this viewpoint in my mind. Agree, don't agree, doesn't matter to me. I recognize her for what she is. Come back to me when someone who does actual research and makes an argument that amounts to more than cherry-picked talking points, easily rebutted at that, wants to fairly and rationally tackle the issue of gender roles in digital entertainment. Then we can talk. Humanist. HA!

Prez, do you have any specific, quotable examples that helped cement this opinion in your mind? I don't mean some shit the Gators made up. What has she said or done, specifically, that made you think this way?

Yes.

Oh, you wanted examples? Oy vey, weren't you around when all this shit was hashed out ad nauseum during the peak of the "gamergate" nonsense? Suffice it to say that virtually all of her evidence given in the videos is either 1) uncredited and unsourced i.e. shit she at best took at of context and at worst just made up or twisted to suit her argument, or 2) poorly thought out and intellectually dishonest examples that either serve as real-world contextual gender roles in given settings (hookers in medieval times or in urban blight areas) that are NOT sexist or can be applied equally to men as well. i.e. "You can run around beating up women in GTA!" Which can also be done to men, therefore her example is trash.

Just because I agree with her sentiment - that women are not always treated fairly or respectfully in digital entertainment - that doesn't mean she gets a pass for consistently piss-poor arguments. I don't prescribe to jdreyer's reasoning that "well we are talking about it so she did something good" because we are talking about the wrong things. All she did with her amateurish kickstarter scams and her antagonistiic, baseless accusations is further polarize the sides in the debate, thus she has done nothing but make things worse. What good has she done if she has only received praise from people already pre-disposed to her line of thinking while totally alienating the very segment of people she was trying to sway? I haven't seen one single solitary instance of someone saying "Well now, I never realized it, but this Ana Sarkeesian is onto something!", have you?
