I think this all has to do with the way people setup the mass. Most values are configurable and unless someone has a very good knowledge (or feel) of physics the results can be poor.

Hmmm. Just had a look at the trailer and wasn't overly impressed. They need new voice actors and more than likely writers. The idea on paper is cool. I hope they beef up the production side.

Sounds cool actually. The most original idea for a while. Even though each of the elements its using are not original in their own right.

The implication I've read (from an interview with some bloke at Sony; Phil....Harrison, I think) was that all the demos used the art assets (models, textures) created for the game.

I just watched the interview and all I'm going to say is... he was lying out of his ass

  • Everything is fully modelled. Check the tires on the vehicle - the tread is actually modelled
  • There aren't any edges to be seen on anything. This means a lot of poly's. We've come far, but not quite that far. Look at the head shapes of the characters.
  • There is object based motion blur. While not impossible in real time, the quality of the blur I think is too good for real time
  • Unique animation everywhere. There isn't a single identifiable looped animation that I can see
  • Some of the textures are huge. Check the 3rd image and the object in the foreground on the left. Consoles may have slightly more memory this time around, but it's nowhere near enough to hold textures of this size.

That's just a few points.

"Its one thing to render a large environement, its another to make it completely immersive and still provide good FPS etc when playing online on a full server. None of the engines you mentioned (Crytek, HF2 or Doom3) have proven their ability to do that. "

Doom 3 was designed for indoors and seems like it has to be retro-fitted to do something like this; hence the MegaTexture technology announcement. It's simply because it was falling behind and licensees probably needed something more.

HL2 seems to be a little in the middle, but Far Cry failed purely on net code. I don't think it had much to do with large environments.

Hearsay disclaimer on the above statements.

Seems to be inspired by Far Cry at least. I like the sound of it and hope they can pull it off.

I think you make a good point that the cost of getting this out the door with QA etc would certainly have cost more than what it will give them in return. At least in dollar value.

Wax is still not close to human skin if you get down the level of what looks real and what doesn't. It's the reason why those wax models still look a little "off". I wish a lot of these games would lay off the specular, I really do.

"While it definitely changes the way you play the game, it's not necessarily for the better. I usually play it on the middle level (can't remember the name), or if I'm not in the mood to sneak much, I turn it down one."

It's really a bitter/sweet issue with this game. I really liked it in a lot of areas, but sometimes it was over the top in difficulty. In some cases though I had better success playing on realistic than the lower levels of difficulty. Strange but true.

"Besides their original codename 'Envy' being somewhat pompous (how, i wonder, did they decide on that word? Were they all sitting around in a board meeting thinking how awesome they were and how much everyone would want to be them?"

I remember thinking the same thing when I saw the name "Unreal". I asked myself, "Who do these guys think they are"? That is, until I saw Unreal running on my Voodoo 2. Unfortunately they haven't blown me away like that since; it's been milkorama all the way. Let's hope they do it this time.

Halsy - stupid question alert...

When you say you picked this up did you mean Gothic 3 is out in the UK already? Or were you talking about Gothic 2?

edit: I see, next year 2006.
