I sometimes think the games industry is heading for a dire time. It's currently a booming industry, but in order to create huge games, costs of developing them are going through the roof.

This is not just a repeat of Daikatana either, where stupid amounts of money were squandered on a bad game. It seems it is becoming necessary to spend huge amounts to create top of the line games, because people want more and more. Kind of scary if you think about it.

Now it seems publishers and developers are scrambling to come up with ways of making money. Valve with Steam and episodic creation and Bethesda with the $2.99 mini mods. I think this may all backfire one day and games may die a horrible death.

Then again, maybe this is just a little over reaction.

Death penalties are a holdover from the coin-guzzling arcade days. It's something which (along with not being able to save everywhere) would alienate many many gamers nowadays, even a large subset of the hardcore gamers who happen to have fulltime jobs.

Funny you should say that, as I'm playing halflife 2 episode 1 at the moment and it is playing very much like an arcade game. i.e. Figure out how to get out of an area while defending yourself - die, start again etc. It seems to go on like this ad infinitum. These sections of the game really annoy.

But how does either MW or Oblivion compare to Gothic 2?

I somehow think I missed something with Gothic 2. I heard a bunch of good reports about it, but after trying the demo I could not get over the laggy controls of the character. It was painful to play, so I didn'tbother getting it.

After playing Morrowind for so long, I guess I got addicted to that type of control, first person perspective etc. Not really an answer to your question though
