Then I watched it again and turned my monitor a little brighter.

I just installed the flashlight patch and watched it over again.

I remember the days when any new engine announcement and/or video from iD would send most forums crazy with activity and excitement. How times have changed.

"If the same crew, or pretty much the same crew, could produce such a miserable sequal as IW, what can we possibly hope from a new one?"

That's all got to do with design leadership. You could have the best team in the world, but if it's being lead by someone who is lost or simply isn't a good designer it won't matter. The project will still end up bad.

Nobody but an eejit would use Vista in its current state on their personal machines.

Same. Let the others find its security flaws till Vista sp2 is out.

Why cant those Xbox games stick with the good old button mashing fighting and racing games for the kiddies.

Because they make a lot of money. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your viewpoint.

It would be nice when Internet distribution does become the main way that people get their games and you can just continue carrying out additional upgrades as long as you’ve got enough people willing to buy them.

I don't think this is the case at all. Big blockbuster releases after a drought of anything good is basically what keeps people coming back. If you give them the frog treatment and boil them slowly they'll eventually get bored and move on.

I really don't think Valve's current approach is going to work in any way, shape or form. Anyone here going to be interested in HL2-ep2 when the marketing hype starts rolling for iD's next "secret" title? Doubt it.

Your calculations suck and your methodology is wrong. First and foremost, 8x15 is 120mil, not 1.2bil. Secondly, the Chinese players pay significantly less than $15/month due to their per-hour pay system and lower cost of living. Monthly revenue is likely closer to 80mil/month at best, and it's anyone's guess what operating expenses are.

Even still - that would be 1.4 billion, per year, without adjusting the conversion of foreign currencies. If you factor in foreign currency adjustment and guess (sorry - cant do much more than that from where I stand ), this would drop the total to a quarter of that number. 350 million per annum.

This is an insane amount of money for any developer. Even a quarter of this would be a gold mine in any developers financial interest (87.5 million). Including running costs, this must be making a massive profit for Blizzard.

And to think Hitler never played a single video game.

Couldn't have said it better. I wonder if they have as much a problem with the 1 year compulsory military service where you learn to kill real people?

I can just imagine someone involved in actually considering this, reading forums like these and thinking - hm, you know what? Maybe this was an ill conceived idea. Lets go back to the drawing board and figure out some other way to squeeze blood from a stone.
