Wow Jonny5, you're right! Man, if we already have 2k3, they ought to charge us expansion pack prices instead of full retail. Wish I'd of waited, but still, I'll buy it anyway, lol...

Hey, at least they are saying that there are more new maps then in 2k3 plus both bonus packs put together.

What I think they've really done here, is find a new way to make a MMOFPS with a monthly fee, but they've stretched the payments to once a year. Can't fault the marketing behind that, lol..

We have differing opinions on what good atmosphere is, I guess. Also, i didn't say id games have BAD gameplay, in fact, everyone of them have had GREAT gameplay. It's easier to have complex gameplay that is BAD than it is to have simple gameplay that is GOOD. Every now and then, like Deus Ex, someone hits a grand slam and we get the best of both worlds, gameplay that is both complex and good. But as far as shooters go, id's gameplay has always been smooth as butter. Good, meaty, solid, satisfying weapons, good to great level design, straightforward (ok, simple) controls, and, at least for me, great atmosphere and tension. Every id game i've bought, i've actually played to the end and finished. It's sad that more of the games I've bought don't instill in me a desire to see what comes next to the point that i'll finish the single play part. I'll pay $50 for anything id puts out, they've already proven themselves to me.

Xombie, i'll try to give you a few reasons. Look at the trailor again. What id does in games better than anyone else, imo, is atmosphere. Quake 2 is still one of my all time favorite single player games. Granted, it wasn't as good as Deus Ex or System Shock 2, and also granted, id doesn't make complicated or complex gameplay, but the atmosphere is always great. In quake 2, I really FELT like a space marine stranded in that god forsaken place. Sometimes in a shooter, like quake 2, I think it's easier to immerse yourself in the world if the game and the levels tell the story, instead of a cheese story tacked on like most games wind up having.

So, reasons to buy Doom 3

Atmosphere

The animation just looks outstanding (that thing crawling down the pipe looks too cool)

Tension (might go with atmosphere)

Money (id has it, and doesn't have to meet anyone elses deadlines, so they can finish and polish)

And if the Graphics can't do it for you, man you are jaded!!

Just watched the trailer again for the fourth time, it still blows me away...well, I tried, hehe!

Doom 3 is first and foremost a PC game. It was designed for the PC. The PC version will come out before the X Box version. Then, they will port it over to the X Box. And probably only the X box, not just because microsoft wants it that way, but because a PS2 probably couldn't handle it. It's not the same situation as with Halo, where microcheese got their hands into the pie early enough to derail the PC development.

Thanks Creston, and again, great post.

The arguement that Halo isn't ditching co-op isn't a good arguement at all. The X-Box version had it, so why would it be anything but natural to expect that the computer version will have it also? If it was there for the x-box, then it ought to be there for the pc, i dont care how "hard at work" the guys at gearbox might be.

This game is 21/2 years old...it was supposed to be a super sensation feel good game of the year type of game. Now it's not. I don't play x-box. I use my TV for watching sports and occasionally HBO. When I want to game, I play on my computer.

In two plus years, nothing new has been added to this game, except six deathmatch levels. BFD.

It will most likely still have sucky console saves, which as one astute poster said, sucks, because if you can save anywhere, it gives you the option to screw around and try new things because you don't have to worry about starting the whole level over. Maybe some of you enjoy starting levels over, I don't. There are too many games and too little time for that kind of crap.

It won't have any new single player content. Why should it, some of you die hard MSXBOX people ask? Well, maybe it shouldn't. But after 2+ years, it wouldn't be all bad if it did. Plus, even the guys at Gearbox were making fun of some of the levels, saying things like "maybe we should add more floors to the endless library level". Well, maybe they should. Or, maybe they should make some new, fun levels and cut out some of the repetitive crap and bad level design that exists in the original game.

Co-op. Don't get me started. Even the Xbox version had co-op, and that was TWO YEARS AGO!!!! If gearbox had to work hard for it, well, so what? They're bound to rake in the profits from their labors, aren't they? It's not like they are porting it over to PC out of the goodness of their hearts, is it?

2 plus years later, and they might not even be able to include all the features that the xbox version had.

SHAMELESS!!!!!!!!!

Been waiting for what Brian Reynolds would do next ever since Alpha Centauri, IMO one of the best games ever made. I'm on and downloading with no wait, this games going to be huge.

People say they copied Age of Wonders.

People are wrong.

If anything, this game leans on Civilization more than anything else, and I think thats a GOOD thing!

Rabid Fanboyism aside, I hope the demo lives up to my own self promoted hype, lol!

You know, the funny thing is, no matter how much I complain, and no matter what gets left out, I'm STILL probably going to buy this game, just to see what the hype was all about. The co-op is big for me because I have 2 machines networked together side by side, and when a good shooter has co-op, it's a great way to get my girlfriend involved in the ongoing task to make a gamer out of her, instead of just ignoring her, lol!!!

I think they will leave it out, just because they say that it's not in for sure. It's been my experience when looking forward to titles that anytime they say "maybe" what they really mean is "not a chance, sucker!"

Here's to hoping I'm wrong!

I can't get through on the link...can anyone tell me what system they are testing on? Processor, RAM, card, etc?

60fps at 1024x768 with AA is actually much FASTER than I was thinking it would run....

"Textures are already pretty high res so we didnt have to do anything there." "Co-op probably won't make it, but it's high on our list." "We didn't add any single player levels cause it's not really our story." "There's a philosophical debate about save anywhere, but it's probably not going to make it."

I guess what I'm mad about is that it took over 2 years to get to the PC, and instead of adding any new features, textures, or computer friendly save games, they are instead TAKING OUT co-op. It just seems like a very long time for very little content. I never bought an x-box, either. I was at one time looking forward to this game with high hopes. I'm not anymore, I guess thats all.

Hey Hump, I used to love Pitchford and co. They used to to a lot of good things. It's too bad if EA forced them in to making Nightfire suck so bad. If it was a no name company making Nightfire, thats one thing, but it's a freaking tragedy that a company as good as Gearbox got dragged down to EA's level.

What scares me so much about Halo, is what are they really doing to it except adding six DM maps? Hell, me and my buddys could do that. "Textures are already pretty high res so we didnt have to do anything there." "Co-op probably won't make it, but it's high on our list." "We didn't add any single player levels cause it's not really our story." "There's a philosophical debate about save anywhere, but it's probably not going to make it."

Things like this lead me to believe gearbox may be getting sucked back into a developers time cycle again. Randy needs to put his foot down at some point and insist that gearbox gets the time and free-reign to make a good game again. Blehh..

Wow, normally a bad thing, sequils, but I don't think so this time...

Doom 3
Half Life 2
Max Pain 2
Deus Ex 2
Thief 3
Jedi Knight 3
Quake 4
Elite Force 2

These are all high quality titles from premium development houses, and every last one of them's a sequil. I wish there would be some new and original stuff from thes Dev. Houses, but at the same time, I plan on buying and enjoying each of these titles! Of course, I also planned on buying and enjoying Unreal 2. Did buy it, did NOT enjoy it. I just hope these guys are going to IMPROVE the originals, not CASH IN on them.

I used to love these guys until they put out 007 Nightfire.
Now I don't trust a damn thing from them. If they say co-op is "high on their list", they probably mean high on the list of things that didn't make it. I had been looking forward to this game until oh, maybe a year ago or so, but now, I really don't care.

FU Microsoft, and F yer XBox exclusive games. Too much other quality PC stuff is coming out this year for me to give a rats ass about a 2 year old port. And while I'm ranting, F U too, Gearbox, for being too lazy to include co-op, and too lazy to implement the option to save anywhere. (A philosophical debate, my ass)

Sorry for the Ranting tone, but both Microsoft and Gearbox just really crushed this game for PC players, imo.
