Just for full disclosure, I personally know 5 of the former employees of 38 who had been involved for over 2 years (well, 1 of them just under a year). There was more going on than just Chafee thinking this wasn't a business RI should be investing in, but that's obvious to anyone without blinders on. You don't magically miss a loan payment just because the Governor isn't thrilled with the deal.

So? It was a bad deal, and the default definitely demonstrates that. Government shouldn't invest in game studios, particularly ones that have no history and naive management. They're simply too volatile.

It's patently obvious they wouldn't have made the money back and extending them another loan would just be putting good money after bad. Seriously, banking on your first shipping title selling 3 million units just to keep the lights on? Good fucking luck.

I'll agree with the last part, doubly so if they've got a trunk.

Agent, quick note:

A) Person who was Governor when loan was made: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Carcieri

B) Person who is Governor now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Chafee

Note how these are two different people.

The 38 Studios deal was done by This Guy. Pretty sure he's a republican.

Small government republicans begging for hand-outs for shitty business-plans? What else is new? Say one thing, do another, every time.

For anyone wanting to try the Beta, you can install the client now and play this weekend (Friday Noon PDT to 10am Monday) if you have a Battle.net account

I wager at the moment for things like this, companies pay them a small sum to host their games so people will try them and buy the full version.

All but 60, yeah.

Between the large subscriber drop, newer tech and Diablo3 about to go out the door they simply don't need as many folks in some areas. I'm guessing the break down will be something like this:
50% Customer Support (WOW subscriber drop, lowered service levels, more efficient tools and automation, consolidation of support departments across the company)
20 - 30% IT lackeys (consolidated hardware, better tools)
10 - 20% QA (D3 getting ready to ship, lots of these people likely were considered somewhat temporary)
10% Devs (under performance, cancelled internal projects, and D3 about to ship, etc)

That's my guess, at any rate.

They have Han Solo ice-cube trays now, I wonder why the popsicle got canned back then.

AT-AT sun shield would be epic.

The process is 100% automatic, no human interaction involved on the part of Blizzard. The only cost to them above and beyond the battle.net service hardware itself (which they need anyway) is bandwidth and electricity used to transmit and handle the name change request. So thousandths of a cent. Given that they pay for that simply by having the service operational and don't charge people to use battle.net, the cost to Blizzard is not the motive for charging.

The reason they charge (aside from pure profit) is to discourage people from changing names every time they troll someone. Basically a fee on avoiding a bad reputation. Unfortunately it affects everyone who is bored of their nickname as well.

That being said, AnandTech was reporting one of their test platforms for Ivy Bridge was available to play around with, and it gave a Windows Experience Index score of 3.6.

...if that's not an indictment of what their integrated graphics are capable of, I don't know what is. (For comparison, my two-and-a-half year old mid-high-rang laptop scores a 4.8, and my desktop scores a 7.1.)

Weird, I have a Core i5 M 460 with Intel integrated chip that gets 4.6, what the hell happened with Ivy Bridge?

Score details:
Processor: 6.9
RAM (6gb): 6.9
Graphics: 4.6
Gaming Graphics: 5.3 (eh? I figured this would be worse...)
Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

As to the talent calculator, yeah, it's silly to call it a "calculator". I think it's more of a "Hey people who still don't get it, this is how it will work" thing.

I like what they did with the talents in MoP (still not going to go back for other reasons). To be perfectly frank, you had the same number of real choices to make in Cata as you do in MoP except now newbies can't screw up and miss filling out talents that are really vital to their class. The old system was unsustainable and didn't add a lot to the game except unnecessary complexity.

So, would you say these animals sometimes exhibit "homosexual" behavior because they watched it in humans or because it came to them naturally?

Actually it's hilarious because it's just a signal strength tester. There's nothing about it that makes it "find" child porn. it just finds wi-fi connections. The article and the comments are fantastically uninformed.

Likely scenario: Cops log in to poorly/un-secured wi-fi, snoop some un-encrypted traffic, see child porn, then hunt down the wi-fi router with that SSID and all clients connected to it.

Nothing special about the device, cops are just catching up with circa 1999 technology.

And as for the mindless commentators on that site crying about privacy, SECURE YOUR WI-FI! You're broadcasting stuff over the air, anyone can pick it up.

They don't assume that. They are merely operating within the current social biases against sex and towards violence. As violence is already so pervasive in other mediums, the law would only be able to very narrowly constrain purchases since they haven't similarly banned other violent media sales to children. Basically they're telling the law makers to be consistent if they want to try banning things, which I think is fair. This law targeted the game industry specifically, not violent media generally.

Already have a key, but for folks on the fence: It's pretty fun. Two modes, city management which you build your tech tree, resource, gear and shop buildings, get quests, and generally play a super-lite sim city. Then quests send you to a battle mode where you play AoE for a bit (10 - 25 minutes for most of the early quests) with the technology you unlocked in the first mode available to you. You still have to advance ages in the battle mode (though some quests start you in Age 2). You equip gear to unit types and buildings in the city phase which provide bonuses in the combat phase. There is a fixed quest chain with repeatable and challenge quests added about 1/3 of the way through. Note only the Greek civ is available atm.

The largest deficiency so far is co-op. The 2nd player starts with effectively nothing and spends most of the game catching up to player 1. I *think* the 2nd player gets double xp from kills to compensate, but you have to get the killing blow, no shared xp. Also there are loot caches on the map which go to whomever picks them up, so if your player 1 friend is a bit rude they might grab them before you have any major units. That's really the worst I can say about it. If you liked AoE, you'll probably like this.
