So, given the visible state of Vanguard at release and the fact that Sigil stated they were effectively out of money to continue long term development, would you, if you were the publisher, release it and hope to recoup something on box sales and anyone willing to push past the first month, or just let it go humdrum on it's way, pouring more money in to what appears to be a dead-end project?

I think we can see the probable reasons why MS pulled out.

The reason Vivendi poured money in to WoW is because Blizzard has a solid gold track record. Even then, there were rumors of Vivendi shopping around their games division...

Tool assisted runs are crap. I don't know why ANYONE is impressed by them at all.

And he shoots a non-boss at 7:55.

Holy crap the ads on the Dilbert page were obnoxious.

Way to encourage people to adblock everything.

I don't mind small banner ads. But when you start having massive full screen ads, animated ads, ads with sounds, or pop ups, you're just going to get EVERY ad on your site blocked.

He was mentally ill, yes.

But why? I've heard he was bullied and picked on (perhaps not in college, but maybe so, I can't say for sure). Seems that the Columbine pair were picked on as well for years.

I think it goes something like this:
Age 11 - 16 : picked on in grade school and high school. Never able to respond adequately. Not much guidance from parents, or at least, nothing constructive.
17 - 20 : brewing and not letting go of the hatred for what the kids did to you. Generally being a loner because it's probably all you think about.
21+: Seeing the same people (or people you percieve to be like them) doing well, enjoying life while you believe they should still be suffering for what they did to you.

There probably is a predisposition to violence required for this level of response, but without the initial conditions, I don't think it would come out this way.

Kids are fucking cruel. Conscience is learned, you're not born with it. They do sick things to each other and some of them forget about what they did, but the people they did it to often don't. It affects them for the rest of their lives and in some cases turns them to violence.

To say he was batshit insane is to vilify all the people who were picked on and beat up and emotionally destroyed. It isolates them further and pushes them closer to this.

The media goes out of their way to give them their spotlight and the further they are from real attention and stability, the closer they are to making the biggest splash they can.

Understanding what drove him to this is the best thing we can do to prevent it from happening again, not boxing him up, saying "nutcase" and moving on.

So long as people continue to use the term "stealing" to describe copyright infringement there will be no progress in dealing with the problem.

Is there a problem? Yes.
Is punishing people who actually buy games the answer*? No.
Is it theft? No.
Is it copyright infringement? Yes.

Misrepresenting the problem to achieve a more emotional effect only serves to confuse the issue and make people not take you seriously. Honestly educate people about the actual problem and maybe you'll get somewhere and some of them might even care.

* - less to do with this post than with DRM and copy "protection" schemes in general.

My biggest issue at 70 is that, by the time I'm 70, there's only 3 or 4 things I can set as goals without raiding. The 60 - 69 gear is as or almost as good as the stuff at 70. Vs 50 - 59 being significantly lower quality than stuff in the 5 man dungeons at 60. Even a significant number of the Heroic mode drops are below what I can craft or have gotten from quests.

And being in a small guild, we can't field 10 people on at a time to run Karazhan.

I've got a 70 mage, my rogue is 66 now, and my shaman is leveling fast. But it just doesn't have the same feeling as being 60 and having a lot ahead of me. Probably give it another month before I take a break for a while.

It's not like I don't have 10 unopened games to work on >_>

It's like nobody even tries anymore.
They're just pulling shit out of hats now.

"Okay number one... Pirates!! Yay! We like pirates."
"Number two.... Teenage Angst! hrm, we can do that. I mean, Look at Orlando Bloom, he's like a teenager almost."
"Alright, finally, number 3.... Dumb Blonde Girl.. What the hell, who made these things? Oh well. We must obey the hat!"

xXBatmanXx.. You're funny. "Remove the mask" Right, who are you? Real name, Address, SSN? Put up or shut up.

As for what he's saying, he's pretty much accurate.

CCP are a bunch of morons for not catching this and dealing with it sooner. All games I've worked on have had all accounts that were flagged to be able to create/modify things in ways players could not had ALL actions logged. All item creation/deletion/modification/etc had to be explained to the supervisors, no exceptions. To believe this has gone on so long seriously puts in to question either a) how well thought out and implemented the server architecture is or b) the ethics of the entirety of CCP.

Either they're stupid or complicit and are only acting because they're losing money over it.

It's also less about what *we* /think/ or would /like/ to be legal and what is legal. Some of this territory is not as well covered by existing case law as a lot of other things. If nothing else, it will be interesting to watch. That is if it ever gets to court and we ever hear of it again...

I'd prefer it this program and programs like it could be developed but at the same time didn't ruin wow. :/

If nothing else, writing stuff like this is fun.

It's not a crime, this is correct. If it was, they would be arrested.

Lawsuits are civil matters, not criminal.

OJ was acquitted of two murders.
But he was found liable for their deaths in the civil suit.

Different things, different standards.

You can sue someone for anything, criminal or not.

I could sue you for making an ignorant point on a message board. Obviously(?), I'd lose, but that doesn't change the fact that I /can/ sue you for it.

? - On second thought, maybe it's not so obvious given the state of this country. sigh.

This might come down, once again, to the validity of click-through agreements (the EULA you see when you log in to WoW after each patch). Basically part of it says you won't use / develop software to automate gameplay outside of what is provided via the interface in the game (macros). It also says you promise not to snoop at the memory blizzard allocates for itself to run WoW in. I think that's where the DMCA comes in, but then, I'm no lawyer by any stretch and I honestly haven't read the full thing recently.

Actually, in some places, adultery *is* a crime. Including some places in the US, I think, though I doubt it is enforced.

Where does it say in battlegrounds only?
"Crowd Control effects in PvP will last no longer than 12 seconds instead of the full duration, with a chance of a heartbeat resist."

So would this not affect world PVP?

What about arenas? Do they count as battle grounds?

And if it is just in BGs/Arenas but not world PVP, I think that's a serious mistake. I'd prefer consistency in either direction to confusing and contradictory results depending on what zone I'm in.

Warrior Rage Normalization will barely affect anyone at current levels. It seems like it mostly is noticable if you compare a current Rage generation rate at 70 to the normalized rate at 70 and I guess even then it's not too painful.

Then again, I didn't look at it myself

But yeah, the weapon skill nerf is a really huge hit to raiding rogues. The difference +15 skill makes on level 63 mobs is quite significant. Heck, it's useful on level 61 - 62 targets, too as glancing blows would actually do more damage than normal hits if you had WeaponSkill>Target DefenseSkill

Then again, that's probably /why/ they're nerfing it.

I'm kind of pissed about the CC nerf. 12 seconds? On some spells that's less than 50% of their normal duration. Lame.

Wow, that's a kick in the balls to rogues.
Hunters appear to have gotten some pretty big buffs. Hopefully ALL hunter traps require 2 second cast time, even when not in combat. And with the changed items to compensate for the lost AP From agi for hunters, some Shaman stuff is a lot better too.
