News Comments > New Eschalon: Book I Demo
1. No subject Dec 5, 2007, 15:26 osage no onna

I really enjoyed the first demo. The world is very atmospheric and detailed and while the premise is a little cliché'd, what with the amnesia and all, I actually found the bit of story that was revealed pretty engaging.

Anyone who liked the early Ultimas and such might want to give the demo a try. Definitely worth a 67mb download.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this story. It's just insane of them to fire their best known and most respected editor.

I have no doubt he got half a dozen job offers as soon as the news broke, but still, just disgusting.

That site isn't getting a single more click from me.

I was tempted but it seems like I need to load the GameTap software which I presume is chock full of spyware, adware, etc. Thanks... But no thanks.

When you become automatically cynical of everything, the internet has won :\

DoW was good. Shadow of the Horned Rat, too. Otherwise, meh.

You must've skipped Dark Omen; that was a really good one.

I don't think there have been any truly good space sims other than Wing Commander 2 and Tie Fighter, which is very sad.

I-War!

i always wondered why nobody ever tried to make a RPG in the Spelljammer setting

they did:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/spelljammer-pirates-of-realmspace
it just wasn't very good

and what's with the lack of ultima on the list, anyway? if they have room for both oblivion and morrowind on the final page, i'd expect to see something more than just black gate at #31.

Now only if they'd make "Ultimate Worlddownunder"...

There's always Arx Fatalis.

"..despite having the same non-realistic flight engine"

You mean, as opposed to how REAL space fighters fly?

And by the way, you're free to cut your engines with 'z' and move by giving bursts with your afterburner, if you want more "realism". Yes, that does imply that they're not suggesting you have to press gas or you stop in space, just that the engines do it automatically to make flying easier. If this type of flying in space ever becomes normal I wouldn't expect it to be any different in the real world either, but calling it "unrealistic" is silly

And same goes for people who comment on the lack of joystick suppoprt as being unrealistic. How do you know how these things will be controlled in 2200's?

Man, this game really sucks, you can hear explosions in space!!

Well i don't think it's anything like Diablo at all There is a massive amount of detail in the game; it's just not forced on you. The inter-faction politics are complex to say the least and there's a good amount of background on each faction. Aside from that, you can click the '?' on just about anything on the map and come up with a history and specifics of just about anything, including dust clouds.

So no, not really like Diablo at all IMHO
