I'm not the greatest advocate of copyright law, but surely that sort of use needs to be licensed, and I doubt NYT released their stuff under MIT-0 or something.
If I read a bunch of NYTimes articles about the war in Ukraine, as well as a bunch of other sources, then write a summary of the war, is that a copyright violation?

I know you're trying to make a snarky strawman, but if you make a business out of copying said articles without coming to any sort of an agreement, then yeah, it probably is.

Holy shit, $40? And no upgrade for existing owners? This had better be MASSIVE.
Or you could pay $70 for a Diablo 4 mtx horse and some premium currency!

Why do that when I can pay $250 for an 18-inch plastic statue and 40-page art book to go along with my DLC?

You may think that's expensive, but good quality figurines of half that size tend to go for that much, without the game or the art book, so that's a bargain if anything :p

That's an EA\Ubi-level cash grab. Shame on you, Microsoft!

Is this some "thanks, Obama" joke? As if Bethesda haven't been the pioneers of cash grabs for a long time now. Microsoft didn't dream up horse armor, Microsoft didn't try to monetize mods, Microsoft didn't release and re-release Skyrim seventeen times, if it isn't even more by now.

I'm logged onto the Discworld MUD as I'm writing this. I guess some more modern ones could be nice too, even though they could never measure up to something that hundreds of people have spent 30 years building.

Now, this might blow your mind, but maybe, just MAYBE, they hear it's popular and fun by word of mouth because it is. I know, radical concept.

Fair enough, and I admit my comment came out unnecessarily trolly, and indeed I don't actually know how fun it is or isn't since I haven't played a single second (then again neither have these 5M people before they buy it). The frenzied chatter around it just gets more and more annoying with every additional 1M sold and it just looks incredibly tedious to me, but I suppose it's pretty low of me to poop on other people's fun just because of that.

Interesting how hungry a lot of people are for the combination of stuff this game has

I don't think the mass of those people are buying this because they're particularly hungry for whatever unoriginal things this is copying from a bunch of other games, that wouldn't explain a tenth of those numbers from an early access asset flip. they're buying it because they hear it's popular and everyone on tik tok is playing it and they want to jump on the bandwagon. A mixture of FOMO and herd instinct.

From my position I've not played such an overrated game in years. I gave up after a while in the first underdark adventure (figuring there are likely more than that). The entire presentation felt like I was watching a bunch of normal people roleplay the parts. I can totally understand how that might be absolutely perfect, because that's absolutely what D&D is, but I never felt transported to another world, I disliked most of my party, and the sexuality was absurdly front and center to the point of being annoying. Before I had reached the Druid settlement at the beginning, half my party expressed their interest in sleeping with me. It wasn't too much longer after that point that every single character was telling me I was the most amazing person they'd ever met, and all of them wanted to sleep with me. I don't like describing things as pathetic but it truly felt like it was. It pleases me so many people are enjoying the game, and giving life to a genre I grew up with, but I can not stand BG3 personally.
No offense to those loving it. I just thought I'd share my counter-experience.

I pretty much agree with all of that, but it's still my GOTY. The horniness was baffling and felt like some sort of a parody, but I did play it right at release so maybe they toned it down (but it would have to be by a lot). You'd think I would need to at least give some dialogue hint that I'm in any way interested in them before they come on that heavily.

Apart from that, I'm a little sad that Armored Core 6 is nowhere to be seen, it's a shoe-in for my GOTY but seems like everyone else forgot it even exists. Maybe it came out too close to everyone's darling BG3.

Also, slim picking for VR games, huh, but what else is new. Apparently Vertigo 2 is pretty amazing though, but I guess Sony Interactive Entertainment marketing has more reach than Zach Tsiakalis-Brown.

Even with all their marketing millions Bethesda could only eke out a participation trophy. Good. They really need a wakeup call if Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be anything else than the same tired old formula on the same tired old engine, but that's probably not going to happen as long as the same tired old Todd Howard is at the helm. Playing Starfield and Cyberpunk back to back really hammered in how they're already a decade behind the curve, and it's going to look even worse for them in another decade when ES6 launches. I've loved their games since Daggerfall, but it feels like their game design is just barely treading water at best and constantly regressing at worst.

Most games on Steam are exclusive to Steam. Does that bother you too?

You realize that unlike Epic, Valve doesn't pay off publishers/developers to not allow people to buy their games on other platforms, right? They're free to put them on anything they like, they just don't always feel the need to. But you knew that and are just making bad faith arguments, aren't you?

I enjoyed the first game well enough (never finished, went on too long), but I have the sequel on PS5 and I don't think I managed to tolerate it for even one hour. The second you load into the world some annoying guy pops out of the bushes and then they just chatter away incessantly and without end. It never stops, and it's clear the guy is only there so that they can run through endless reams of dialogue. I don't care about you and I don't care about your inane exposition; can you not shut up and just let the game happen for even a minute?

Maybe they shut up at some point, but I found the game so grating from step one that I'm unlikely to ever find out.

Hear, hear. Enshittification isn't something that happens over time like meat going bad. It's a plan to draw people in (high appeal, negative profits), draw businesses to the people (moderate appeal, minor profit), and then, when both are so locked in that they can't leave, shift the entire service from drawing customers to milking them (low appeal, high profits.)

So basically the classic "the first hit is free" drug seller business model?

Have any recommendations for alternative sources of internet content?

Lemmy's been picking up steam. Obviously it doesn't have the tens of millions of daily users so there's way less stuff, but a lot of popular subreddits seem to have an enclave there too now. Dunno if I'm completely sold on the fediverse thing it and Mastodon espouse, but the bots and astroturfing on Reddit are only ever getting worse so it's probably time to pull the plug on that anyway.
