The discussion is what we have seen the 2 engines doing, not what each respective company claims the engine is capable of, or will be in the future.
Well if the past is any foresight into the future, when released HL2 will be the only game we’ll see from Valve for about 6 years. While Gabe took the last year and scaled there source engine to compete with the likes of Far Cry and Doom 3. id released a game that is extremely scalable which beigemore eluded to in post#56 and will probably not reach full stride until the end of 2005 if not longer. It’s no denying that computer specs are holding id’s engine back, and that is an admirable feat.
What year did you fire up the purchased by Valve mod counterstrike and say "wow these graphics are dated"(or something along those lines). Dated to the point where its counter productive to play this game because it may give a developer a false sense into thinking they can release a game with crappy graphics and millions of teens will buy/play it, making them silly rich.
For every year a game gets held back it looses at least two years of its shelf life.
Hl2 will be a dandy game, like many are but will it be able to sustain the the longevity that’s going to be placed upon it? HL1 didn’t.
