News Comments > Origin Expanding
27. Re: Origin Expanding Jan 24, 2012, 18:15 Tomas

I won't touch Origin with a ten foot pole, but I'm hoping they do improve and give Steam some real competition. It could only do good for the industry. I'm surprised at how slowly Valve has expanded and improved Steam. There are still horrid bugs that have existed since near the beginning in Steam as well as a great host of issues that ought to have been addressed already.

I really see no reason to buy another ATI card when I next upgrade.

The funny thing is that every time I buy AMD/ATi I think this same thing. The funnier thing is that every time I buy nVidia I think the same thing, but about nVidia, instead. In the end I've realized that it isn't one that is necessarily better than the other, but rather specific cards which are just more stable and "better" than others. It's like tossing out one set of problems only to inherit another, equally as frustrating set.

I remember when I used to put Valve and Blizzard in the same category. These days I won't touch anything made by Blizzard with a ten-foot pole. As much as I hate even Valve's DRM, at least I don't feel like their trying to screw me at every turn.

It's too bad the graphics overhaul stuff never pans out. I'd love to replay this with updated graphics and all the latest patch bits. I've recently installed it again, but with so many games to play I've not given it another run.

10 bucks would have made it a maybe on my list. 15 just takes it right off. Would love to play it, but not for more than half of what I paid for the core game (28 on GMG). This is definitely milking the fanbase and I find it kind of offensive to be honest. If they're trying to undo the goodwill that they'd begun to engender, then this is a great way to accomplish such a goal.

So can I have my money back then? Ugh. I hate to jump on the GFWL hate wagon, but I've had enough issues with it to not want to see what happens with Batman:AC. Hopefully it'll be more or less transparent as has sometimes been the case.

News Comments > Why Minecraft Isn't On Steam
18. Re: Why Minecraft Isn't On Steam Aug 30, 2011, 01:01 Tomas

A thought on why Valve has their new policy.

Release free to play game on Steam. Make money off micro transactions and or DLC not sold via Steam. Steam foots the bill for serving up the data and everyting else that comes in the package (free advertising to its users, etc.) Now since the company using steam can handle all the money stuff on their own Valve gets nothing for providing the service. Not really hard to see why they don't want to do this.

That probably isn't the only issue here, but I'm sure it was one that came into the thought process.

As for the yellow... haven't noticed it...

It's under gameplay, if I remember correctly. I personally waffle between highlighting on and off.

8. Re: No Home Dedicated Servers for Battlefield 3 Aug 24, 2011, 18:43 Tomas

Congrats guys - you're now on my don't buy list. I don't care about your excuses. I don't give a damn about your ranked servers. I just want to host my own server, and not one that is limited by where you say I can host it. I can't believe MW3 actually is sounding like the lesser of two assholes right now. Yes, I'm pissed. I miss the days where gamers were valued customers instead of afterthoughts. You now fit nicely saddled between Ubi and their ridiculous DRM and Blizzard's offensively obnoxious money grabs. Thankfully there are some developers/publishers that have managed to keep their heads out of their asses.

Surprised Blue hasten nuked this post.

Blue noted he has limited access for the weekend. Could be the reason, though I'm not sure what his nuking policy is on things of that nature.

I'm a proud non-purchaser (non-consumer too for those obnoxious few of you who assume that means I must be pirating their stuff) of all Ubi products since their first mention of this abuse of their customer base began.

I wonder how many others like me are out there and whether this DRM really is helping Ubi in the long run.

I think this will be the first game in years which I have been excited to play through for a second time. The good news is the alternate campaign for chapter 2 remains unplayed by me. I'm hoping there's some new stuff to augment it as well. =)

Yes, buy games based on promises. We know how well that has worked out for people in the past.

Buy the game because you know you will enjoy it for what it is.

Maybe true for most publishers, but Tripwire has a good record of doing just what they are saying they will do.

I wish more people believed in the Conan O'Brien philosophy on cynicism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiSpULCYJn4

News Comments > Borderlands 2 Announcement Soon?
60. Re: Borderlands 2 Announcement Soon? Aug 3, 2011, 02:11 Tomas

Not sure if all the Borderlands hate is from early players or not, but it was and is one of my favorite games from the last few years. We played the crap out of that thing coop. Granted we didn't try it out until long after it had released so we probably missed the major issues that everyone hated. Yes, there were still annoying consolifications and other such things, but it was amazing fun with a few buddies. It is to date one of the only games in my 25 or so years of gaming that I've played through a second time. Super excited for Borderlands 2. Hopefully they'll fix what sucked on PC and then just make it more of the same awesome.

Funny thing was I really didn't have any interest in it until I picked it up on a whim during the summer steam sale last year. Before that I'd always just more or less ignored it. SO glad we grabbed it during that sale. I have 105 hours logged according to steam.

So excited for this game. You can't beat DRM free and awesome all in one package. I really hope it's as good as the first one.

As long as it isn't an MMO...

Agreed...but I'd love it to have multiplayer servers. I have always wished to play the X games with my friends (and possibly others). That's the one thing above all that I felt it needed. Being able to build an empire with your buddies would be so fun.

Either way I'm optimistic about Rebirth. Hopefully the coming weeks/months will surprise us in a good way.

If anyone ever finishes a graphics update for this I'm totally going to replay it again. I'm not totally sure why Blue continues to post these updates, but I really enjoy seeing them. =) It's like Duke Nukem, but in a good way.

Duke had single player? Really? I honestly didn't know...haha. Which is funny considering the zillions of times we played it MP.

6. Re: Magicka Patched Jan 29, 2011, 02:47 Tomas

Slag it all you want, but even broken it's more fun than a lot of polished games. Sure, it sucks when games are released half-baked, but I've been having a blast playing it coop since day 2 (day 1 multiplayer was a pile of junk...haha).

Anyhow, coop has been fine for me since day 2, sure there's the occasional bug, but none of them have been a big deal for us. If you're afraid of bugs feel free to hold off, but unless you the sort who is unlucky and can't get it to work I don't expect you'll be that upset about the state of things.

News Comments > X: Terran Conflict Patches
10. Re: X: Terran Conflict Patches Oct 10, 2010, 03:02 Tomas

Terran Conflict is FAR easier to get going in than previous X games. I have enjoyed them all, though they are a far cry from most modern games. Expect some learning curve (the in game tutorials are...eh, not really good). I would highly suggest reading up a bit as mentioned in this thread. There is a lot of depth in the games, but if you aren't familiar it's more like an old school game where you needed a manual. Fun though. I can't believe how many hours I dumped into building my empire over and over. Also, the mods are fantastic. I can't play vanilla anymore after having so many amazing mods/plugin/scripts in my games.
