Imperialism, now in two exciting flavours!

Mmmm, delicious.

...seriously, the game looks pretty swanky.

I'll buy this game if, and only if, I can play as John Kerry.

AFAIK, you can mostly get Doom3 to work in 98 right out of the box. technically, it doesn't support it, but from what I heard, it works.

and yes, I fall into that category, and no, I don't have Doom 3 yet, and yes, I will get it working on 98 once I get it.

Does this mean we get Tenebrae 2 as a free standalone game? Thats be fucking sweet. Cause with all the ugrades, the Q3 engine now looks on par with Doom3, so amateur game developers could use that engine for years to come and still have amazing graphics, which traditionally indie games have not had access to.

This has nothing to do with principals. It has to do with the fact that, unless someone makes a revolutionary new breakthrough, ala 3.1 -> 95, I'm not ever going to upgrade my OS, becuase I just don't see the point. If its working, why replace it?

Look, I use whatever works best. I don't use Mozilla or OpenOffice to spite Microsoft, I just use 'em because they provide a better product. Same with 98. It could be 60 years old for all I care, if it works, why bother?

and hey, I'll admit, Longhorn could just be a big enough difference to warrant upgrading...

Yes, Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so what? that doesn't mean that its magically obsolete. Guess what, Microsoft is going to come out with a new OS every 4-5 years, because, amazingly enoughm they're interested in money. Launching a new OS, which people think they suddenly have to buy just cause its the newest thing, is a quick way to make money. Hmm, imagine that.

Now, can someone explain to me why I should get XP, others than "its there".

Someone mentioned how it takes up more resources cause "its better". Hmm, well how exactly is it better? Is there anything that I need, and yet do not have under 98, that XP provides? Other than a few stability issues and some "easy to use" bullshit, why exactly is XP superior?

Besides, its not like this is Linux we're talking about, and you have to code seperetely for it. How can you *not* make it 98 compatiable, thats the way it is by default?

Its not even a money issue. Suprnova is just a click away.

You make the mistake of thinking that XP is somehow better than 98, in much the same way that a Radeon 9800 is better than a Radeon 7500. And that my friend, is a filthy, dirty lie.

As I said, for anyone other than a housewife who's sole concern is how to send email and "keep safe from the hackers", XP is just needless, unwanted crap. It takes up more resources, is more restrictive, and puts more control in Microsoft's hands.

But wait! Its the newest one! That means we HAVE to buy it, cause its the newest one, and if you don't buy a new OS every 3 years, you're obviously stupid and should not be meddling with technology.

I'm not going to install whatever piece of spyware-ridden junk Microsoft chooses to label as an OS and sell for $500. If I wanted to do that, I'de buy a Mac and install their "upgrade" every few months, and fork over a few hundred bucks.

what...the....fuck!!!!!

I have Win98, and I have no intention of changine my OS, no matter how many new pieces of shit Microsoft comes out with. Its takes up more resources, is more restrictive, and gives MS a bigger monopoly.

When have you ever heard of a PC game unable to run on Windows 98?! It insane. It had to be intentionally programmed in that way, there's not other explaination.

This is fucking bullshit.

Things have calmed down a bit over on Hard Light Productions, but I will continue to redgard Derek Smart as an arrogant, self-centred so-and-so. He wants respect, and yet he is not willing to respect anyone but himself. The fact is, his design views are his own. Obviously, alot of people don't share his opinions.

As for the mods, of course they HAVE NO RIGHT to exist and cut from the copyright holders profits. No business would succeed that way.

What is this guy on? There is not a single game developer in the world that would agree with that statement. Not a single one.

But, wait, of course, Derek Smart knows better than everyone else.

Shit, worked for us over at HLP. About 3 pages into the discussion, Mr.Smart made an appearance and graced us with three whole posts, mostly telling us how he's right and we're wrong.

My favourite line, after his name appeared on the Who's Online list:

"The ego has landed"

Let me assure you of one thing that you can go to sleep with tonite. I have FULL intentions of getting this license. If I DO get it, you and your teenny leetle friends on your Ferrous Oxide project, are effectively, shutdown because I don't piss around when it comes to IP properties. You would do well to ask around. I've sued publishers for less and I have attorneys around the world, literally on speed dial.

What a mother fucker. For those of you who don't know, this is reffering to the Freespace Source Code Project (SCP), a project to better the game engine (which is working marvelously) and the Ferrium Project (FE2), an effort to build a whole new engine which would be superior to even the SCP-ified Freespace 2 engine.

Basically, he's saying that if gets the license, the dozens of mods, campaigns, engine improvements and so forth would be fucked. 5 years of the fans work, and this asshole with his ego the size of a planet is threatening to shut it all down.

Just so we're clear, the Source Code Project is not mediocre changes. The look of the engine has been upgraded almost to modern standards. Working from a 5 year old engine, if amazing what has been accomplished, and even better stuff is to come.

According to the Avault forum, there's a near riot on the FS forums at the news.

I can voutch for that. The thread grew to like 9 pages in a matter of hours. By the time I post one message, there are already 5 more to be read. And its also produced several spinoff threads, one of which is "How much would you actually be willing to pay to buy the Freespace license."

Go there now, its a fookin' madhouse :D:D

More Smartness:

I have NO time nor patience for an unruly, snivelling, self-serving fanbase.
and also:

And if you guys think I'm thinking some pantsy ass console shooter, think again. I'm thinking build an ENTIRE ship in 3D from the inside and out. Then merge it all with a great action focused (with mouse flight controls!!!) campaign that would be true to the franchise. Maybe a few planetary missions (well, I have the tech, why the hell not?) missions to move the campaign story along.

here's some quotes from the Hard Light Productions forums, where Derek Smart posted. Just to let you know, Hard Light Productions (HLP) is the biggest Freespace community out there, so if you want to discuss, get your asses over here:

http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25162

and now, for the quotes:

If I wanted to make a Freespace 3 title, I don't think me checking in with a group of fans going in a different direction is in the best interests of my end goal. I mean, think about it. They're making something from someone else's code base. They have their own plans, ideas, goals and whatnot - none of which will ever reach the critical mass that would warrant a full retail effort. Ever.

I have absolutely NO intentions of using ANY of the Freespace2 source code because its legacy and its just going to be trouble from the word go. My plan - if I get it - is to start from scratch with a clean slate and only the Freespace mythos, backstory and assets (e.g. the ship types, names, dimensions etc) as a starting point.

"Yes, I have an ego. But thats not MY problem to deal with. I am quite comfortable with it just the way I am. I am an Alpha male. A leader. Not some snivelling idiot who gets to be anyone's bitch or Yes- man. Having an ego is a pre-requisite for being a stong person. Most people who bandy the word ego around, have to frigging clue WHAT it even means. The word itself has just been passed down from one uninformed and ignorant generation to the next. Next time you get the chance, find out what the word really means and you will immediately see how out of place and out of context it is as is popularly used. Yes, I have an ego. Deal with it. I don't have a problem with it. So why should I care what a bunch of people think?"

"Blaming someone else for your actions is a sign of weakness. You are weak.

People usually fear that which they do not understand. I am a very complex and hard person to understand. I like it like that because - at the very least - it means that everyone knows where they stand with me.

As for greatest. A game does not have to be great. It just has to be FUN and PROFITABLE.

If you knew ANYTHING about the business of game development or the responsibilities of game developers and publishers, you would immediately recognize the ludicrousness of your post."

Good news, even though I've never played the first 2 games. Interplay is unwilling or unable to develop their games properly/at all, so this is for the best.

One down, one to go.

*crosses fingers*

c'mon Freespace!

Your are Empty actually looks very intersting. The graphics are great, more realistic then even HalfLife 2 I would say, and the setting sounds cool. If they can pull of some good gameplay, even if its just run and gun, I think this sounds like a game for me.

Codename: Xtreeme Forces?

oh come on, thats got to be a joke. No one in their right minds could actually think of a name that stupid. I refuse to believe this is real.

It uses every single cliche in game naming. Whats next, Shadow Project Forces: Codename Extreme Ops.

morons. they also mispelled extreme, a two syllable word.
