Documentation ? Apr 29, 2004, 04:22
Apr 29, 2004, 04:22

There is no documentation at all on how to get the new custom stuff to work or even where to put it in the new directory structure. In fact, no documentation on it whatsoever. I'm hoping that something will be released. Other than that things are looking great.

The new models look great.I'm also very happy about the ability to add new skins etc. However, when I try to continue with an existing Deleted Scenes campaign, it crashes to the desktop. Startinga new campaign works fine.

Hmm. Maybe if I dump and reselect my team it will work. It could be the new models gumming it up.

Edited: yep that fixed it.

Before you pay to get the full version this way remember that they will likely be incompatible online with the CD store bought version and that any patches won't work on them because trygames (who everyone is now using to make these upgradable versions)modifies the executable. They have been ruining things even for the people who bought the CD versions because the servers keep crashing if every last person doesn't own the same version and everyone is getting tired of trying to log in to a game and then just having it crash on them.

I heard any mods now kill the game. This probably means that the purchased download version is also incompatible because the executable is modified. This is what happened with some of the other games. Now all you see are empty servers because everyone is tired of the game crashing if every last person doesn't have the CD version.

Hit detection ? Apr 3, 2004, 00:31
Apr 3, 2004, 00:31

Did it fix the online hit detection? When playing online vs anything but bots or very low ping players, it wouldn't detect hits very well at all and someone could follow someone around the maps and empty half of their ammo supply into them without killing them.

The game had promise but far too many serious flaws.

As if anyone needed one more reason not to buy from Atari these days. At least they supposedly tested the patch this time. They posted on their own beta board that WOTM's beta test was canceled. They also said that the original demo was "leaked". It came also came out just before they shipped it so they couldn't have fixed any of the problems which made it nearly unplayable online anyway.

Once again, anyone who bought the game by dowloading the timed trial version and then paying online to unlock the permanent full version is out of luck. The patch only works with the store bought CD version. Trygames.com modifies the executable.

Atari's partnership with trygames.com just isn't working. Trygames and Atari both tell the customers that they are out of luck and too bad (if Atari ever even bothers to reply to support emails at all, they often take several weeks even if they do).

Don't buy those 2 hour timed demos they are junk.

Burning the upgraded demo onto CD doesn't help anything. It has been tried.

This word from a trygames.com (the same company handling the unlimited demo for Dead Man's Hand )support email concerning incompatibility problems with their games : "Although it is the same game, our downloadable technology isn't compatible with the CD version."

I haven't tried DMH but it looks like there is about a 50/50 chance of it not working with the CD version online. I'm not sure how much online play would really be involved with this anyway but they do list networking requirements and lag etc in the readme.

There is a serious problem with some of these unlimited-play-buy-full-version-by-paying-online games. Some are incompatible with the CD store bought versions for online play. There have also been a number of nasty threads elsewhere about unremovable ad icons being created on the desktop as well by the demos.

I hope this is really only an early beta. There are a lot problems to be fixed. This is nowhere near ready yet.

This is fun. I'm not normally a fan of circular tracks but this is a blast. They also added a bunch of non-oval unlockable fantasy tracks. Some of the hardcore dirt sim fans are throwing temper tantrums about the unlockable fantasy tracks being added but I love them and they were the main reason that I tried the game. You don't even know they are there unless you seek them out anyway.

Now I hope that Ratbag will get to work on Powerslide Slipstream which is the racing game that I'm really looking forward to (that and Bugbear's chaotic full contact Flat-Out).

The UT team has been asking themselves the same thing about speed increases under 64bit. Drivers need a lot of work but I saw them estimate about a 30% increase. I have no idea how much this will improve with better drivers/fine tuning.

I heard that they were showing off an impressive build of 64 bit coded UT2004 last September. Any word on when users will get a chance to see ?

Microsoft has a free preview version of 64 bit Windows available for download (requires an Athlon64 or Opteron and is rumored to need polishing and better drivers and graphics support).

There is a fix for the new video problems.

Use Notepad to open

\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\VideoDefault.con

Change

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1

to

renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0

The question is whether Atari will bother to finish the game before they ship it. My guess is that the only thing they finish is the ability to sit in the car and honk the horn. Don't expect any support after that and don't believe anything that the ads claim will be in the game. They've proven themselves to be false advertisers with titles like WOTM. I won't be buying anything from them.

From the screenshots that I've seen of the maps and from playing the Downtown map, they do look nice though. It looks like there was some decent talent at work but Atari jumped the gun.

With these titles being this pathetic, the right owners to Terminator may have a hard time getting much money by selling the rights to produce games in the future. I know that I won't be buying any games from this franchise in the future. I just hope someone tries to nail them on the false advertising details now that they have yanked the cutscenes.

After hearing more reports from England, it sounds like the full version has all of the same bugs as the demo plus several new ones including lots of lockups. They also forgot that they released in England several days earlier than in the U.S. so nobody could do multiplayer until a day or two ago.

When people look at the dates on the extracted files from the demo .cod file the dates on most files are fairly new. In addition, from what I hear, they may not have beta tested this at all ( other than the "leaked beta").
