Last time I checked the only thing you 'vis' are maps. You don't 'vis' pak files.

The pak files are convienent ways of 'pak'ing a whole bunch of files without having to dump it all over a directory. As long as your directory structure in the quake dir isn't all hosed I don 't see the problem. Besides work for a completely seperate gametype would probably be done under a different folder than 'id1' which all the vanilla quake1 stuff/pak files are under.

I have to agree with xeno..

Even though I was at qcon this year, I didn't get a chance to play the d3 demo, but I still look forward to the game. Who knows, the 4 player thing might be cool.

Also, while there I was able to get in some coop on doom2. Actually got freaked out a few times when we would bust in on a room and find 50 imps or demons waiting chew our ass. Mad fun. That is one thing that will be sadly missed from d3.

On to quakecon stuff, I had a blast this year, probably the most fun I have had at a qcon since 99. I am ready for HL2 and some other game to get going though, so there is something else to play besides quake3 next year. Looking forward to next year.

I have a 10 gig new ipod...and windows 2k.

First off, It doesn't have ac in, but rather the firewire cable plugs into a plug base thing that connects to a wall socket. I believe I have seen car adapters for it, but never have had to use once since the battery last for 7-8 hours..and I am never in my car that long.

The software for windows is MusicMatch Jukebox..which some people like, but I think it sucks. I use ephpod instead, much better and less annoying than MMJ.

I got the 10 gig since my mp3 collection is much larger than 10 gigs, and I don't need to have it all on the player at once. So far it has been great, and the design is quite nice and simple.

I say if you have a need for having 10+ gigs of music on the go, go for it. My only complaint is that I wish it came in black or grey or something.

While I think that publishers are watching steam with interest, I don't think they are shakin' in their boots just yet. Even though steam is an alternative to the traditional box method, I think at least for now, most people will want to still buy the physical box game rather than download it on the fly. Besides, I think publishers are looking for something like this. Why not have a distribution system where you can provide all the games in your library (or most at least) on demand for users. Rather than just one dev house's offerings, get the exclusive rights like they have been doing and offer many more games. This makes it easier for people to get games and perhaps easier for people to make impulse buys, as all they have to do is click a button if they see a game they like instead of going to the store.

The other thing I find interesting is the possibility for movie rentals and other things like that, where the consumer doesn't have any expectations of keeping some physical remnant of what they spent their money on.

Ofcourse this is all speculation, but I find it interesting. Plus what I have used of steam so far is pretty cool.

While I am suspect of the legitimacy of your post, The dude, I must say that you definately got your money's worth on that thesaurus.
