News Comments > MoH: Pacific Assault Delayed
16. It's not easy, you know? Aug 7, 2004, 03:38 Vexar

Making games takes a lot of work, not sure when reading all the posts from all the threads for delayed games if anyone realizes it.

How long did it take for Doom 3 five years, HL 2 even longer, DNF longer? I just finished Doom3 you can tell how much work they put into that product.

My perspective is a distorted by the fact that I give up a lot to make games, and know many of the people on this team who have been working seven days a week for almost a year trying to make a competitive product, but when reading these posts I always wonder why do I do that, always the same, and start to understand why most everyone has stopped reading or responding to the comments like everyone has put down so far.

Read that MOH designer diary below (not my website I mean the front page) Jeff is not kidding about how much sleep he's been getting, he did the same thing on the Breakthough expansion pack, even worse he slept in his chair two days straight to make a milestone, the animators at TKO never left, and we even installed a shower for them, because they cared.

I just wish you can see the posts from perspective, delays mean mistakes were made, and the people who do the work have to pay for those choices with a lot of sacrifice, Cheer them on like I do, it does help during the dark times for us game developers, and we do read these sites everyday because it's the only source of information when you have no time to read a news paper or watch a TV.

27. We are challenged... Jan 10, 2004, 06:17 Vexar

I worked at EA for six years, and at the end of a dev cycle when you had to have the logos play I started answering the screen,”having gone crazy from lack of sleep" in the same whispering voice "We are challenged!" I would write in on all the white boards, and sometimes I would use the sling blade or Forest Gump accents, it helps believe me, and got me through many a jam! EA is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

On the patch, fuck ya give it to me Scotty! DC is awesome, anyone who doesn't like it, well can bite my wire.

37. Re: reasons why DC sucks... Dec 21, 2003, 17:57 Vexar

I've found a couple of great DC team work servers. They have admins playing most of the time, who aren't afraid to ban people who a screwing up the game, people also switch sides when the game is unbalanced. It's just like every other game out there.

I played the other mods, they aren't that well polished, and have witnessed horrible tk'ing in EOD. It sounds like your blaming the DC mod for the players; it is not a fair assessment.

I will tell this too, DC is a lot of the reason that BF is being played so much, I would give it 45-65% of credit, and the guys at EA know this.

30. Good Upgrade... Dec 21, 2003, 05:31 Vexar

• The new vehicles, good!
• The new maps, luke warm. No Fly Zone is my favorite map.
• Upgraded older maps? Didn't see any changes, Bocage Day 2 could use the little bird and replace some of the black hawks, etc.
• The harrier is still a pisser to fly but I just need to practice with it more.
• New maps still need the screen shots that are shots of the actual level, etc.
• The all the tuning is awesome! Great job!
• I figure that we will have this patch for a short time; maybe a month or two before the next one comes out, at least the have a chance at testing all the new stuff before the new BF EA patch comes out with punk buster.

18. Another reason it harder than it seems.. Oct 25, 2003, 02:19 Vexar

EA uses a security program on the disks they sell, this code is a pain in the ass to deal with internally sometimes causing bugs, so working with an outside developer like DICE to fix something can take forever.

Also remember people are working on new products not just support, so this isn't the highest priority for anyone. Add to this it's three different versions of the game with X amount of patches, plus all the other languages. You'd be surprised how long it can take when something isn't the company's top priority. Even testing has been working on the Q3 releases, so don't blame anyone it is just how it is.

To the guy complaining about the chat lag, someone did post an article about why this is a pain in the ass to fix. Don’t remember where I read it, PlanetBF maybe or the EA site?

If you want to complain about something, complain about CS sports trying to charge you for looking at your stats. Now that's BS.

232. Re: No subject Sep 28, 2003, 23:58 Vexar

I have a different theory than damolecs, even though I do respect what I've read in his posts.

Vivendi has been looking for a buyer, and have been. I believe that that Valve’s deal with them is based on Vivendi being a solvent company, and if Vivendi changes hands, Valve would get all the rights back for distributing HL2.

My guess is that Gabe is very smartly hanging onto the title until Vivendi is sold to someone so that he can distribute the title on his own with Steam, and find another publisher for the Box item. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft published the title, and incorporated steam into the next version of windows.

Like I said this is just a theory.

My running list of developers that have power over publishers. (add more) and this list isn't in any particular order so don't try and read anything into that.

id software
Epic
Raven
Lionhead
Dice
Valve
Blizzard

hmm... who else?

45. Thread seems off topic now? Sep 5, 2003, 01:30 Vexar

The way to improve games is to actually review, and compare them. Please put some energy into detailed breakdowns of what you like and what you didn't like. I've been making games for a long time now, and I actually listen. Usally a pattern imerges from the comments, and it does get factored into future design desissions.

I know some people still do this, but not as many. How about someone comparing the CoD demo, Mp demo to the Breakthough Mp Demo or Wolf, BF, etc. If they come out? I would enjoy reading someone elses perpective.

I know this post is bitching about bitching which also seems pretty common these days, at least I have another book to read, still don't which game to buy.

News Comments > UT2003 Patch Plans
30. It worked for me on both.. Feb 23, 2003, 22:07 Vexar

my systems. Duel AMD 2200+ with a GF4600, and the 2.4 Dell with GF4600. I had the detail settings turned all the way up on both, and it played fine.. I was even running both with a DX9 beta so I was expecting probelms.

Now I am playing C&C Generals, also on both and it's working fine. I have heard of some probelms with AMD's but they are older AMD systems.

Anyway this thread is about a UT23k patch with more content, and fixes. I hope more players start playing this game, but I think people it looks like BF, CS, and MOH are not in trouble of losing the top three spots anytime soon.

This information is based on looking at the GS and ASE numbers.

Peace!

19. Per Chance? Feb 11, 2003, 03:54 Vexar

Maybe it wasn't clear, I loved playing those games, and still play them once in while. My problem is they just don't keep my interest for more than an hour or two. You should give BF a good two weeks playing on Nvidia servers with the 1.3 patch. I think once you get good with all the vehicles you might change your mind, and not look back. Also just saw a realism mod for BF, maybe that would make you convert? I haven't tried it yet...

I grew up/worked on arcade games like Race Drivin' and Steel Talons. My personal preference is the arcade like physics of BF, I know it’s not everyone's cup of tea.

Also I worked on Spearhead so it's hard for me to say it's a great game. I lost my perspective on it, but it's nice to read that you like it! Right now all I see are the flaws... :-)

Peace!

14. Pretty but... Feb 9, 2003, 02:59 Vexar

The game is beautiful! The work done by the Level Designers/Artists is great! The engine has some really cool features, for instance the terrain tools are very cool!

I think the problem is gameplay! When you compare UT2k3 to a game like Battlefield 1942 on the net why would you want to go back and play something that we were playing 10 years ago with Doom II? A double jump is not a great leap forward in design! The sport mode was cool, but not like jumping into a plane in BF, bombing and strafing. I just feel like players are moving away from running around simple mazes, and shooting at each other with particle weapons. BF1942 forces you to work as a team or you will lose, and the different classed characters need to work together to be successful. I’ve watched Assault players protect Flak gunners on Coral sea because they know they have to or lose. Omaha Beach playing Allied, we are pinned down by the lame ass grenades from above technique. (Very effective as it is, we still won!) After dying about 20 times in a row a group of us ran to the far right side of the map, one the engineers used explosion packs to boost us up a part of the playfield that we couldn’t run up, we hit the Axis from behind and ended up winning the map. Team work, pure team work! This Engineer made it his role on the team to do this for everyone, I died a few more times, and he stood his post and kept helping! I’ve never seen that in any other game ever!

BF1942 is my FPS dream come true! I am sure many other avid FPS shooter junkies feel the same way! It takes all your FPS skill, and forces you to extend it. Epic/DE could have put High Tech vehicles into the product, would have been like Halo but better looking. This would have expanded the gameplay, but would have missed Christmas! Also adding a class based system ala Counter Strike, BF, Wolf, MOH, etc. Just a basic when you change weapons it makes a difference in the way you play the game like system. The Unreal system is just the same as all other games before it. I’ve played a ton of Q3 or UT and I am just bored of running over power ups, and blasting away! These days you have to offer me something more than pretty backgrounds.

I have UT23k sitting right here under my Road to Rome expansion pack box. Finding only servers with bots? Then join us over in world of BF1942 if you haven’t already!

News Comments > Unreal II & More Game Movies
29. Hello fellow bluers... Jan 29, 2003, 03:50 Vexar

My thoughts on Unreal II...

I look at it this way, Legend is contracted by Epic to do the job of making Unreal II. Who knows how much they were contracted for, but it couldn't have been enough money to make up for how long they spent working on the product, obviously it was suppose to make Christmas. This spilt in the product was the only plan they "the producers/epic/legend" could come up with to have the much needed 3rd quarter revenue. Legend for pure survival reasons needs to move on, so they can start making real money again, not just enough to survive this horribly long hall. They want to do a good job, they did. I am sure the best they could, and now they must move on. Simple.

Infograms is in financial trouble, and has been for a few years this also not news. The only part of Infograms that is making money for them is the Unreal franchise. EA, Rockstar, Activision, and even sad little THQ are making a ton more money and product. Infograms have no console business, this is 95% of industries revenue the other 4% is the SIMS, 1% left for the rest of the PC products. Maybe my math is off a bit, but it not far off.

Infograms/Atari have also been late in paying bills, royalties, and generally mismanaged their products into a sad state. Epic knows this, they would rather be the shinning example of success in a smaller pond than just loose change on table of an EA or Microsoft. This puts them in a position of power, and I respect them taking advantage of creating a franchise that is in demand enough that they can get away with this way of thinking. The only other team is id software. Activison has a team of monkey’s working round the clock kissing everyone at id’s ass, and rightly so. They are Good money makers, and set a standard in technology that none have matched consistently.

Don't feel sorry for Infograms, they are short sighted, greedy, and not generally good decision makers. I predict Epic's properties will go to one of the larger more stable publishers Microsoft, and or EA very soon. Everything that everyone here is complaining about is a symptom of an under powered, under funded, under managed publishing house who is trying to compete in the modern sales war, and losing.

Many things could have been done to prevent this from happening, but they didn't do them. I am sure if the sales of the product are hurt by this lack of support Epic will move their great products to someone who can sell, market, and promote them properly.

Mr. Vexar has left the building under the cover of an Oakland Raiders banner and is moving to downtown Oak town, he is drawn to the warmth of the burning tires, and the friendly faces who reside there.

And as Yoda likes to say "These flame wars have just begun!"
