Well, just to clarify, since you both obviously did not understand what "No, it tells me I need a subscription" means. It does not tell me I need to register with Fileplanet, because at theat point, I was logged in to Fileplanet and had filled the forms already. It told me I needed to buy a subscription if I wanted to try the beta. That's all. So, I suspect the news were just wrong.

Maybe it will be open after the subscriber-only period or something? Sad thing, actually, I kinda liked the single player demo.

i never finished the original. is hordes a lot better? what about the other expansion?

I'd definitely say so. Better plot and better overall graphics (I think the engine is better suited to dungeons than to open areas like in the original campaign), and all of it is tied together much more craftfully.

it will probably not be in the bargain bin, it is still relatively new and they probably still sell a few copies.

You do realize that thereis a page with info on this ad idsoftware.com? No. Thought so. It is not that expensive, actually.

But then, why spend lotsa money on it after all (depending on the definition of "lotsa", of course)? There is the Torque engine, costs 100 bucks IIRC, and of course Quake and Quake 2 are GPL'ed - you can do whatever you want, you just have to release your modifications again. Check DarkPlaces, Tenebrae, Quake2Evolved, ...
The Serious Engine is quite cheap as well, and the one that powered Gore (forgot about the name). No need to spill a million bucks, if it does not have to be id or Epic, but needs to be closed.
Other GPL'ed engines include Crystal Space and Ogre. Use google.

Nevermind Doom3, I'm looking forward to Guild Wars...

*ducks to avoid objects thrown by D3 fanboys*

You kidding? GW is gonna own!

Yeah, most definitely. E3 alpha was really fun - this is something I am gonna buy. A fine (albeit simple) MMORPG, no treadmill, no monthly fee... what more could you want?

Well, that might be because Valve did not just release HL1 in 1998 and then all of a sudden disappeared until last years Sept. 30 fiasco, but took over CS, there was OpForce, there was BlueShift, there was CS:CZ, there was TFC, so there never really was any time without theme having some release everybod talked about.

Half-Life is just not the only thing they did, it is the basis for evyrything they did.

Well, did not any game do that, as long as an editor shiped with it and the maps were not compiled?

Yes, that would of course include every Unreal engine game with an editor and Starcraft and NWN, so you are right. But what about Far Cry, e.g.?

would love to try Daggerfall if only I could get my copy to run on XP

There is a fan-made launcher for running Daggerfall on XP. I cannot find my downloaded copy of this launcher ATM, else I would offer to email it to you, but I had it. Really. Try googling it, it worked really well for me.

I honestly have to say that it has been quite a while since I read a thread here on Blue's that include so many long comments, with words in them, you know, that actually had to say something. Not much ranting, just passionate discussion of the topic at hand (and the spin-off "console-vs-pc").

These are times that make me think I am not alone i a world of 14 year old CS players. And please, if you are 14 and like CS: I apologize. I think you know what I meant.

Great input, guys.

It is out in the UK on DVD and only DVD (that is where I imported mine from, I am German), so it kinda is out on DVD. Depends on the country. Maybe statistically, Europeans have more DVD drives or something...

From the Ubisoft board
(can be found here: http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=400102&f=452106891&m=540100183):

Gameplay changes

  • Made the run speed about 15% faster
  • Made sprint last 30% longer
  • Adjusted damage to vehicles
  • Vehicles now survive longer in multiplayer and behave consistently between weapon damage types
  • Bullet damage can be disabled by "g_vehicleBulletDamage" cvar: 0 = no bullet damage (default), 1 = bullet damage; this works only in MP.
  • MP vehicles can get the same damage from every kind of bullet (no distinction between sniper rifle and the deagle), this value is set by 'dmgBulletMP' variable inside 'DamageParams' table of the vehicle.
  • Buggy, humvee and gunboat can be destroyed with one rocket.
  • Bigtruck can be destroyed with three rockets.
  • Buggy and gunboat can be destroyed with 100 bullets (if g_vehicleBulletDamage = 1)
  • Humvee can be destroyed with 150 bullets (if g_vehicleBulletDamage = 1)
  • Bigtruck can be destroyed with 500 bullets (if g_vehicleBulletDamage = 1)

Bug fixes

  • Investigated a number of serious issues with headshot detection
  • Various network improvements
  • Vehicle damage code cleaned and made more consistent for modders
  • Fixed some issues with ladder animations appearing odd to other players
  • Fixed a number of ladder related bugs
  • Added better quicksave state saving for single player (corrected around 100 bugs)
  • Fixed bug where players name tag didn't show up in multiplayer
  • Fixed bug where console would accept letters as variable states
  • Fixed error with warning message in connection dialogue
  • Fixed issue with connection dialogue error message
  • Fixed incorrect HUD message
  • Fixed server shutdown dialogue error message
  • Fixed a number of issues with the server listing not displaying correctly (greyed out)
  • Fixed UI bug that caused cancel button not to work
  • Fixed issue causing server create sessions not to be saved
  • Fixed issue with Radeon 9600 rendering issue
  • Fixed Punkbuster crash when switching from punkbuster online server to hosting LAN server
  • Fixed issue with punkbuster icon not showing up in the server listing
  • Fixed random crash relating to punkbuster server listing info
  • Fixed issue with punkbuster refusing connection to a server that is destroyed and then re-hosted
  • Fixed a number of crash problems related to punkbuster server creation with non-dedicated servers
  • Fixed issue with punkbuster enabled in multiple server profiles
  • Disabled e_vegetation_min_size in multiplayer (used as cheat)
  • Added optimizations for character effects including invulnerability shader
  • Added optimizations for scoreboard performance. Scoreboard no longer updates fields that have not changed
  • Fixed issue where radar would not be drawn correctly with certain game type changes
  • Fixed framerate issue when player touched assault ammo pickups

Try this torrent:

http://66.90.75.92/suprnova//torrents/1735/hl2_fulldemo_e32004-zip.torrent

I downloaded it from there, it is from both booths, runs 25 minutes, is Cam but not ShakyCam, doesn't pixelate and just blows. It is 650 Megs, though...

Don't forget -- D3's framerate is locked at a maximum of 60 fps.

No, it's not. The world tick of the engine is set to 60 Hz, taht is what you remember from when JC announced it somewhere, never thinking that everybody would read it as "capped to 60 fps". This is actually a step upwards from all (id?) games so far, who ran at 30 (I think). But this only means how often the engine enters e new state, not how often a new frame is drawn. That can be as high as ever.

...Trent Oster does not only state that supporting the community dost BioWare big bucks, but that they are still evaluating whether or not to do the same for NWN2. Sounds vague, but not too vague to me

---------

Translation:
BioWare is probably going to announce Neverwinter Nights 2 at E3. Producer Trent Oster hinted at a reduced multiplayer aspect as well as reduced editor functionality. The reason for this: development and fine tuning of the level editors as well as helping the community building modules cost BioWare roughly 2.5 million dollars, which is approx. a quarter of the whole development budget. "We think the investment paid off", Oster told Gamestar.de. "We have yet to determine though whether we will do the same efforts for Neverwinter Nights 2."

Edited for typos and clarifications.

I for one do not yet own a DVD drive, and I am a hardcore games as well. Up until now, there was no need for one. I watch video DVDs on my standalone player, and I just have nothing else except for videos that came on a DVD.

Well, since I preordered UT2K4 Special Edition I guess I need to get one now, but up to now...
