Had Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth in my hands today, unsure whether to buy it since I haven't read any reviews on this PC game, only previews, so it is already out... at least here in Germany.

What Blizzard needs to do is make a CG movie.

Yup, alsways said that as well. A Warcraft or Diablo movie, done entirely in the style of their introductions... would love to see that. The WoW trailer is also pretty much kickass, although it has no plot, only shows off races and classes.

On topic: Hm, who is this guy and why would I care what he writes about in his blog? I mean, everything in there sounded plausible, but not more as if I thought like 10 minutes about how Diablo III might look like and wrote about it. Anyway, there is still hope, loved the first two.

I do not think that "Rune" could not be considered a AAA title. Maybe it didn't sell too well, but it is nonetheless not a budget title IMO. And yeah, Prey looks promising indeed!

It does, but I kinda followed that game som etime ago (although "followed" is still too much, actually). Point is the "studio" Prairie Games is some dude and his wife, and they are building this on a heavyly modified Quake 2 (Evolved) engine. Since they were so few developers (two) they decide to go with sprites instead of models, since they'd never be able to accurately model all characters alone... don't know myself what to think of this.

Edit: seems like they went with models after all... hmm...

No, that area is only accessible by some excessive cliffwalking, I have been there already, but only after being taught where exactly you have to walk. So doable, yes, n00b easy, no.

I thought about that you can see some stone floor at the bottom of the screenshot, indicating the player taking the screen was on a rooftop. Point is, the buildings at the airport have walled up doors or the stairs leading into them (think the dwarf towers in Loch Modan style buildings) are flipped vertically, looking weird, but probably done just so to prevent entering them. Would mean there needs to be a teleport target point on top of the building, because you cannot get up onto them even if you get to the airport.

anyone really believe anyone bought a known MP franchise game for SP?

What are you talking about? Quake? Oh yeah, that franchise that featured one game with a good single player part without a story arch, one with a story arch in SP, then one game continuing the second, and in between there was one game without SP. Quite the anti-SP franchise you make it out to be...

Btw: Yes, I mainly bought it for SP... play mostly WoW or a quick fix of DoD:S online now, so that's enough for me.

Ih I remember the rumours correctly, Atari is trying hard to not go down. Where did they find some cash to license the top of the line UE3?

As for the 'flying' mounts... Don't get those hopes too high... Most likely it'll be a change in animations and no real flight... or restriction in some other way... otherwise all those false boundaries (steep cliffs) won't work no more, and the battlegrounds will change (though flying mounts might be 61+ or some shit).

Flying mounts are only usable in the Outlands due to the nature of the terrain there (can't reach some places without flying), and not in any of the old zones.

(long and boring rant which I read completely...)

You know that you basically just described the shortcoming of every FPS released in the last 5 years or so and ascribed them to Quake 4 exclusively? Or rather the major one shortcoming, because you made 50 points of one problem: "NPC scripts for movement and dialog are sometimes triggered weirdly and look out of place, but darn - technology for this isn't really that good and won't be for the next 20 years or so." Really.

Half-Life 2 was an amazing game IMO, but the NPCs sometimes (!) stood around, got in your way, ran into fire without a reason, medics did not heal you even though you were quite low on ammo, they would not react to "use" and so on and so forth. Same with Call of Duty for example.

Anyway, I will stop now after this short answer and go back to playing this really great and entertaining game with incredibly gorgeous visuals and have fun doing it (yes, I am talking Quake 4 here). Have fun playing that game from the future where NPCs are not scripted but behave like humans, always have something new and interesting to say and now when to do that and how. Thanks.

I find it kinda interesting that MOST (not all) people here who say Quake4 is too much like Doom3 for their liking did not play it at all or only for very few levels. So far I'd say that some levels remind me just a little of Doom3 texture art work, but that's about it. The architecture and level design reminds me much more of Quake2, and the SP game play really is a lot like a fictious micture of Quake2 and CoD. Ignore the art direction and imagine the game with totally bland textures (i.e. just phong shaded or something), and it would easily pass as a weird CoD adaption. The levels look like Quake2 though, with the buildings, small details and Strogg enemies all being very reminiscent of that game, just modernized for 2005.

I also thoroughly enjoyed HL2, but I must say that on my current replay I was quite pissed at several parts where doors would not open (although I remembered passing through them from my first run) when they were suddenly opened by Alyx after a dialog or some such. Same on-a-rail feeling here, just hidden differently. I actually like how Raven hid some such parts in Quake4, with an engineer trying to open the door and then later succeeding.

Anyway, having a blast with Quake4, having had a blast with HL2 and FarCry, having played Doom3 but being bored by it, and not caring for F.E.A.R. because of the demos,

I had hoped for Splash Damage after their brilliant work on ET (which was a polished RtCW to begin with), but I guess that was too far fetched with the upcoming ET:QW. So this would have been my second dream candidate for RtCW2 MP.

Bring it on!

Holy shit, that CryEngine video looks awesome! Especially the interactive environtment (both the plant getting brushed aside by the player as well as the truck driving into the building) and the soft shadows of the plants on the ground. This will really make the next game generation feel more alive and real...

Crap, sounds possible and goddamn fucking scary...

And don't forget that Riley Pizt will drop by to remind us all that all Valve games are bought rented through Steam. He's so witty!

That's why I wrote subscription

Except for those who will come in here soon and

1. complain that DOD:S is not included in their retail Collectors Edition,
2. say that DOD:S is just a mod and is rpiced way to high at 19.95,
3. complain that Sept. 26 is not "soon" after the first announcement of it (you know, "coming soon"), and OF COURSE
4. that Steam sucks donkey balls.

I myself will happily click the preload button next week in my HL2 Silver subscription.

Box art has been out for some time now... especially interesting since the box says DVD and not CD-ROM which I would consider a given in this day and age...

Actually, I do not really care, since the old HL engine is now insanely fast, and features load times that are much shorter than Source engine games (even if you disable the map loading for the menu). For me, this means ease of installation (since I honestly do not even know where my CD would be) and fun playing through it again without Source hickups (even though HL2 plays basically fine).

So in what way is DS2 not at least part RPG? I havent tried it yet. Did they take away the skills system from the first game? I always thought that was a cool touch, and made it more RPG than most other RPG games.

You know, that is actually a pretty sad comment. In essence you are saying that a game that does not let you play a role, but lets you become more powerful over time through some random combat skills is actually a better role playing game than other games more focussing on the role you play? Ah, I give up...

Hm, makes you wonder why they work so hard on this, and then release it without any playtesting. I mean, those controls are just unbearable. Seems like they never played any other game from the 3d genre as well, either. *shrug* Too bad, was really looking forward to this.
