As someone who's done a fair bit of interviewing, I can say that hiring is one the most biased processes we have. No one ever has all the qualifications you're looking for, so you're almost always picking among multiple non-ideal candidates. How that decision is ultimately made is usually completely subjective, and therefore ripe for discrimination on any number of areas.

Yup.

People endlessly whine about "merit," without stopping and thinking. No one, nor any position, is simply a set of numbers. Everything is more complex than that.

Even where it numerical, it's still situational. The situation I frequently give is a team that does 2 main tasks. They interview two candidates for a new role. The first candidate ranks a 75 at each task. The second candidate ranks a 40 at the first task, but a 100 at the second. The first candidate is better on paper, but if the existing team is all very strong at the first task and moderate at the second, hiring someone best in class at the second makes sense, even if they're the weaker candidate overall.

And this doesn't even get into cultural fit, in that no matter how good a person is at their job, if everyone hates being around them they're a net negative for the team.

Not a concern as far as I know. To quote a well known sportswriter, "If you took all the cheaters and bums out of baseball you could put the Hall of Fame in a broom closet."
Lord knows Curt Schilling won't be missed.

He was a very good pitcher for quite some time and had no cheating scandals that I know of. The only thing I can grasp at you did not like his politics and my question what has that to do with baseball?

He's borderline hall of fame, at best. He's behind the average HoF pitcher in virtually every meaningful category.
So to make a case, you need to look at the intangibles. Is he beloved? No. In fact, he's largely been asked to stay as far away from the sport as possible, as he has been an embarrassment.

I know some of you conflate awful things with conservatism. Homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, misogyny, etc. These aren't generally conservative values, but for some reason, some of you defend them as such. But people aren't against them because they're conservative, they're against them because a very rich man such as Schilling constantly whining about people that have no impact on his life is pretty much the definition of a jerk.

And this doesn't even get into him using his fame to get an incredible loan from a state government, which he did not deserve but happily took, which he then lost and declared bankruptcy, screwing over that state and his employees, and then went on to discuss how bad government handouts are, as if he didn't get one of the largest in Rhode Island history.

14.5, so I'm not in the money, but I can flip it.

I figure ride it out. Cost me $150. I'm treating it like a bet on a horse.

Normally I support PETA's basic intent, but like so many liberal causes, they are now going off the deep end. Just how does PETA think domesticated animals came into being? Cattle, sheep, horses, Oxen, chickens all used to be wild animals until man started capturing them and keeping them to perform work or serve as a food source.

Domesticating wild animals is OK in my book, but it does sound like this particular coconut operation is unnecessarily cruel.

Now? PETA has always been off the deep end.

I wasn't aware that social media was "centralized"...;) I'm not sure that is the problem. I think the problem is that political censors with shallow mental capacities are running the cancel culture. It's the banning of speech that is the problem.

It may seem like social media is "centralized" and that one "big" censor is directing all of the "little censors" as to content they should ban. But really, I think what happens is mere copy-catting. Censors by nature are fairly dense/dumb, so they merely copy one another. There should be no censors employed by social media--that would fix the problem nicely.

IMO, apart from the following two characteristics, no speech should be censored:

1) Gratuitously profane posts which do little aside from convey profanity sans any rational thought.
(Ex: "F---,F---,F---, you, u motherf---ing S-- o- a b-----! Eat my d---!")
2) Threats of physical violence against named individuals.
(Ex: "I am going to shoot J-- B---- soon.", etc.)

Apart from the two conditions above--nothing at all should be censored from public discourse. Censorship of political speech is not only as dumb and unenlightened and as backwards as it gets, in America it is unconstitutional (illegal) for any US government authority, be it local, state, or federal, to penalize or punish any American for his political speech. Free speech is an American birthright. Only fools and ingrates would see that right nullified, imo. American social media companies which pretend to offer-free speech platforms to the American public--but don't--should be heavily fined by the government until the censorship of non-profane, non-threatening discussion stops. $1 million a day in fines should do it for the first 90 days, escalating to $2 million a day for the next 90 days, escalating to $3 million a day for the next 90 days, and so on--until either the company goes bust or the censorship finally stops.

Few people will be happy with Tim Cook or Zuckerberg telling them what they can read, what they can say, and what they can think. IE, the judgment and reasoning capabilities of either of these individuals is sorely deficient in this regard. Free public political speech is always the best policy! And in America, it's the law.

So you want the government to fine social media companies for doing something that is their right to do, even though they're not violating any law?

Other differences: liberals accuse conservatives of racism or racist policy decisions, conservatives that don't believe in Satan-worshipping cannibal pedophiles think racism is as real as Satan-worshipping cannibal pedophiles.

It's amazing that someone makes a rant like that, using the term "bitch ass liberals," yet thinks he's the reasonable, rational, intelligent, and "adult" voice in the room.

We're not 23 year olds. I'd wager everyone here that you're accusing of sticking their hands in your pocket pays more in taxes than you do. And I'd wager that, other than the bad tax plans Trump approved, your taxes don't increase under Biden, because you're middle class.

You're in good company with Trump, his family, Rudy Giuliani, OAN, Jacob Wohl, and literally no one else.
Don't screencap this, just make a gentleman's bet. If Trump gets 4 more years, I'll never post here again. If he isn't President next year, you agree to the same.

I never use phone cases. I did crack one, sadly the first that I didn't have insurance on, but only one.

The whole flagship design concept is kind of busted. You build a phone to be as thin as possible, with glass on both sides. The result is something that doesn't have as much battery as it should, is heavier than it should be, and is fragile. I much preferred the build of my Nokias. Yeah, sure, polycarbonate is considered lower end, but it was built like a tank and difficult to damage, it was lighter than glass, and it wasn't as thick as a case while having more internal space for a larger battery.

I've considered the S21. I have an S10, but they'll give me $550 for it in trade in, plus a Verizon value, making the S21 with the increased internal storage about $250. Probably how much my current phone will decrease in trade in value over the next year.

But the good camera features that I'd want are in the Ultra, which is too big imo, and the S21 has no real boosts yet loses external storage and the headphone jack, two things I use daily. Probably not upgrading after 2 years of this phone, for the first time in 20 years.

If we repeal Section 230, then I would have had cause to sue Blue for the time that Cutter's death threat to me was up.
Yeah, it came down when reported. Yeah, Blue then took steps to increase the mods. But any of us seeing anything would be cause, as Blue would lose protection from lawsuits.

It's a mess we wouldn't want. It would inevitably lead to most places simply removing messageboards. I'd place good money on these coming down. If Blue was suddenly considered publishing what we say here, that would be a risk. Best case for small boards would be to require a mod to approve everything before it's posted. Even then, would you trust volunteer mods? They're not the ones at risk of lawsuits.
