Amazon must have the occasional failure. By hiring that dumbass Smedley, they have pretty much ensured that this will fail.

At Amazon we hire 100 people a week. And MAYBE retain 10-15 of them after two months. This is just a much bigger job position. And with his history I don't see him being kept very long.

You work in Hebron. SLU hires way more per week, and retains them. Salaried and hourly aren't comparable, and this studio will be all salaried

But the Amazon way is produce results. They are VERY mechanical in this nature. Because they way I am reading it is that Amazon wants to dip into the Twitch market. With Star Citizen and now Amazon Games Studio, I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon makes their own version of Twitch.
And when Amazon goes at something they go in at full force.
Example is Amazon building more buildings at in their current areas (like mine), and also building an entire hub at the CVG airport.

You said "but," but nothing you said contradicted anything I said.

FYI, I worked in SLU.

Yup. Especially Disney. Disney has divested itself of virtually everything it can't put everywhere. It sold Miramax and shut down Touchstone because those studios made things that couldn't go onto ABC, The Disney Channel, and the parks.

It focuses its resources exclusively on properties it can put in multiple channels. That means not saying things like "Kill All Jews," even in jest.

Being an adult realizes there are repercussions to your speech. No one is stopping him from making these jokes, but people are unwilling to keep doing business with him when he is likely to harm their other businesses more than he helps them.

Movies are released on video so fast. I saw an ad for Dr. Strange coming February 28. 3-4 months ago it was released in theaters (October 20, 2016). 3-4 months is about the same time for Star Wars TFA (In theaters December 17, 2015, released on DVD April 1, 2016) I wonder if this is an industry practice or something exclusive to Disney considering they own so many large IPs (LucasFilm, Marvel, Pixar, etc.)

It's fairly standard industry practice these days, but is new as of the past few years. Probably a response to declining cinema sales and to piracy, i.e. movies have shorter theater runs and the longer they sit around unavailable, the more likely people will turn to piracy.

Perhaps, although I don't think studios are losing money from ticket sales. According to BOM all of the top ten worldwide films grossed over a billion and with the exception of two were released within the last 4 years.

1 Avatar (Fox) $2,7B - 2009
2 Titanic (Par.) $2,1B - 1997
3 Star Wars: The Force Awakens (BV) $2,0B - 2015
4 Jurassic World (Uni.) $1,6B - 2015
5 Marvel's The Avengers (BV) $1,5B - 2012
6 Furious 7 (Uni.) $1,5B - 2015
7 Avengers: Age of Ultron (BV) $1,4B - 2015
8 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (WB) $1,3B - 2011
9 Frozen (BV) $1,2B - 2013
10 Iron Man 3 (BV) $1,2B - 2013

I think it's more about the ADD nature of entertainment. After a few weeks, most films cannot pull in an audience. An audience is always looking for the new. I guess Studios have to move to make sure DVD/rental/digital sales are high.

Wrong chart. Adjust for inflation and keep in mind that studios keep much, much more of the revenue in the US than outside of it.

After 6 years of living as a single man in two bedroom apartments, I moved to NYC. A 1 bedroom half the size of the penthouse I had in Seattle, for more money.

Yeah, I'd accumulated a lot of stuff in that time - putting stuff in a closet was way easier than throwing it out. My kitchen had 3 times as much storage as mine now does - my kitchen actually had nearly as much storage as my entire apartment now does.

Moving was not at all fun. And I still have too much stuff. I can't imagine if a girlfriend moved in.

Going to see a lot of developers bowing out of making games for the Switch. It is typical Nintendo, put out a product that has far less power than anything else. Strictly a niche product if you are a Nintendo junky.

The GC was the last Nintendo product more powerful than the competition (the PS, but not the Xbox), and it had terrible 3rd party support. Did better than the WiiU, at least, but was still a bomb. A wonderful, amazing bomb.

In handheld, Nintendo has basically always been less powerful, and always dominated.

I agree with you. It's the same issue phone app stores have. An enormous amount of garbage gets funneled on, and people have no reliable way of filtering through it. So the big apps with large marketing budgets get seen, and things in the top game lists keep getting sales solely for being visible on that list, but anything else falls to the bottom.

And there's no real media to call attention to the games. Reviews of small indie games don't really generate many clicks, so anyone that's tried to go out and review all the new stuff gets overwhelmed with the quantity and ends up out of business.

lol. "Maybe not having pictures of naked women is a bad idea."

I think it will be a very short term blip.

I mean, who buys porn? Who buys magazines? Who buys porn magazines? Playboy realized that their content was literally the only draw anymore, because the naked photos, well, they have literally no value due to the internet. So, by getting rid of them, you can expand your market to those that wouldn't be comfortable reading the magazine due to the stigma around the photos. Hell, I'd wager one of the biggest places magazines are still sold is airports, a place Playboy couldn't penetrate (hehe) due to the nudity.

It didn't really work, but I don't think the lack of nudity really accelerated their demise. And I don't think bringing it back will slow it, either. Yeah, the first 1-3 months may sell higher than in years, but those buying it for the nudity will quickly remember that the internet exists, is cheaper, is easier to get to, has more options, and is raunchier.

Never-the-less though, the world still is less without Gabe in it.

Ok, but what are you actually doing to make the world a better place? Everyday about a 1000 children die from starvation/malnutrition related issues. They're also used as literal slaves both sexually and for labor. Even as shitty a deal as this guy had he's lived the comparitive life of Reilly. And Nintendo gets kudos for what? Allowing him to play an hour long demo? Yeah, they're real heroes alright. Christ, get some fucking perspective.

They made one very unfortunate person extremely happy on their deathbed.

Sorry that you're too jaded to understand how someone born knowing they're going, and the family around them, could be made extremely happy for a brief time by this, and why that's important.

This is not a bible study. I made a point using the Bible as a reference. I'm not responsible for your hatred of it. If I have to deal with political discussions in a thread called "Out of the Blue" then you will deal with the occasional religious message. If such a message causes you to foam at the mouth, I recommend 20 mg of valium or beer; whichever tickles your fancy.

I mean, but you don't have a PhD. I'd trust a PhD in quantum physics before I trusted a guy that home studied as a hobby.

Not to mention, religion is belief based, not fact based. You're coming in with the assumption that there's a big beardo in the sky and he made a virgin pregnant. I reject that, so can reject much of what else you say because it's based upon something I think is incorrect. Much like, if a guy comes to me and says I should listen to him on science because he's read a lot, and global warming isn't real, I'd cut him off there, thank him, and exit the discussion because nothing meaningful would come from it.

Yeah, hold it in a muslim country and see how that works out for you. This liberal stupidity over this issue never ceases to amaze me. Yeah, fuck security, let's just open the borders entirely and let anyone do whatever they want. I'm sure that'll work out well.

This is probably the first time I 110% agree with you.

What the press--most of it, anyway--deliberately keeps forgetting is that Trump has never opposed legal immigration. It's only the illegal kind that he opposes. We have legal immigration laws and procedures for 101 good reasons, at least--to restrict disease carriers, criminals, and terrorists, etc. The legal immigration process gives us time to properly vet immigrants and ensure that they have something of value to contribute to America--so that unlike what we've seen from Cuba and Mexico in the past--countries aren't cleaning out their jails and essentially deporting their felons to the US where these people then become our very big problem. Every other nation (with the exception of the foolish EU atm) has very strict anti-illegal immigration law--just try illegally immigrating into Mexico, for instance...;)

Pushing for illegal immigration makes not even an angstrom of sense--it's ridiculous, illogical, and completely irresponsible and unmindful of American citizens and their rights to be safe in their own country. In the oath of office the President takes, he pledges to protect America from "all enemies, foreign and domestic." The concept of "open borders" seems to me a clear violation of that oath--Trump is the first President in a long while who is taking that part of his job seriously.

BTW, the 9th circuit should be abolished...;)

Patently untrue. His ban impacted legal residents.

He has one share.

Which, to go on a tangential rant which doesn't specifically have anything to do with him, I do adore when middle class people act as if companies doing things for shareholders is good for them, because they hold $5,000 to $50,000 in that company, when in reality they're usually better off if the company does what's best for its employees and not its shareholders.

Being a shareholder only matters when you hold a tangible percentage of a company. If you don't, you're better off with that company giving its profits to its employees. Basically, if you aren't super rich, the company doing what's best for its shareholders usually means screwing you over and leaving you in a lesser place, even if you made $3,000 on the stock that year.

Immigration difficulties aside, Some countries are known for hockey and others for soccer. Since dota is an online multiplayer game I wonder if there is one region that is home to the majority of professional dota players.

It's all based on circumstances, right? Hockey requires cold weather and disposable income to spend on expensive equipment and time carting kids around to rinks, so it's found in wealthier northern countries. Soccer requires literally something to kick around and a spot of dirt to kick it, so it's found everywhere, but most commonly in regions that have good outdoor weather year-round and a population too poor for their children to have much to do beyond kick anything laying around around.

For DOTA? I'm guessing a place with the infrastructure supporting visibility in this. Korea and China and their still common plethora of internet cafes.

No shit you both, "retarded child" isn't talking about children, it is a compound insult meaning "Slow of mind, unintelligent, mentally distorted, confused, stupified, numb-in-the-head" (pick one). ^^ The child insinuating they are on top of that mentally underdeveloped and that insult can imo be used as compound just fine. In fact that is how the insult goes in German, only it'd be far more insulting to call a 25 year old a "Bescheuertes Zurückgebliebenes Kind" ^^ Which does not mean he is a "Kind".. duh.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=retarded&defid=316451

Still, it doesn't feel appropriate using "child" as an insult when it can be then turned into a defense. He was an intellectually retarded adult, fine.
