Gotta agree with Verno. If something as sensible and logical as enhancing background checks (I mean seriously - who would oppose something like that?) could meet such vehement resistance as it did in the Obama era, there's literally no hope for greater gun control in the US. Is not sensible, however, to blame someone who realizes this and accepts it for the deaths in Mass shootings.

I think it's sensible to be angry at politicians. "Welp, we can never change" isn't a good answer. I know I'm going to an extreme, but politicians in favor of civil rights movements repeatedly tried to make changes, knowing they'd fail. Each time they moved the needle a tiny bit. Those tiny bits add up.

By giving up, you accept there will never be change. Each tiny bit helps lead to change, though. If you're a politician that won't do what's right because it's hard and you may fail, you're a terrible politician. Or, maybe, a great one...

After reading the thread I only wanted to make a correction: automatic weapons are not for sale anywhere in the US to the average citizen. "Automatic" specifically meaning multiple round discharge for one trigger pull. The shooter allegedly illegally altered his rifle to automatic firing according to one of the reports I read. Other than that tidbit I have nothing to add.

Some more info:

You can legally buy a fully automatic weapon from the pre-ban era, in states such as Nevada, for ridiculously high prices and various tax stamps. Pre 1986 full auto weapons still exist, just the price is outside of most people's range.

Also, you can cheaply convert (illegally) most modern ARs to full auto, or slightly more expensively(but legally) convert modern ARs to simulate full auto with either a Crank trigger or Bump stock mod.

Doing a little web searching, the full auto sear packages for conversion are around $90 or less, although note that converting a post 1986 weapon to full auto is asking for massive fines and jail time. Also some milling and metal working knowledge required.

Bump Stock and Crank triggers are in the sub $500 range and a couple companies make them as far as I can tell, legally. The Bump stock in particular makes the trigger get pulled with every round, so it will not be legally challenged for quite some time. Cranks...are a bit more of a grey area, but have yet to be challenged.

This post is just for information, we'll see/hear what the guy in Las Vegas had at some point in the near future, no doubt.

Reports last night said legal bump stock. But I'll give a few days to make certain all reports are accurate.

We sure showed them though didn't we.

Yup, because we came in with our own slave trading and rape culture, and started a mass genocide on them!

Not really certain what MA thinks he's proving, but he'll probably deny that the US has any history of the above.

all those women who fought on Normandy beaches, couldn't have done it without them. Sunny

No one whines that Wolfenstein created an alternate universe with Nazi robots. Consider this an alternate universe with female combatants.

What's worse? You having to have your immersion broken by female combatants in this one game, or females having to have their immersion broken by playing as a male in nearly every single damn game ever made?

That's funny because when I played Tomb Raider I didn't think, boy I wish I could control a dude instead. Women don't care that they're playing as a guy in a video game, only 4th wave feminists do.

the game is cancer though so the point is moot.

Explain to me what a 4th wave feminist is, and why only they care.
Or do you just regurgitate buzzwords you read on MRA sites without bothering to comprehend them or empathize?

When you whine about 4th wave feminists, you come across as an incel.

My dad is one of those angry over the federal estate tax. I keep reminding him that it only applies to estates over $5.5M, and his is not there today and will certainly not be there ever, as he's already retired.

Doesn't matter, a month later the estate tax is still a chief concern of his, as he thinks the government will take his money after he dies. The state, sure, but he never votes based on state estate taxes...

Like you guys, I really enjoyed Gwent in the game. Usually I hate stuff like that, or at least get tired of it quickly, but I always found Gwent fun.

I did the beta of this, though, and quit almost immediately. The entire interface was garbage to me. Loud, complicated, and taking up too much space. I basically wanted the exact experience from in-game, with something I could easily have in a window while screwing around online. Instead, it just seemed ugly and, well, overcomplicated.

I always find I never use XP boosters. I can apply double XP to my next event? Great, but what if I suck in that event? Maybe I'm not feeling it.

Net result: I don't use that thing. I've gotten better about such things with most resources, but it isn't the first time I've mentioned here that I rarely use one-time use items of any type of rarity. Here, I wouldn't much care, but I still think that Destiny 2 shader thing would have been no fun for me, where I to be a Destiny player.

I thought we got that with the 1060-1080 series from Nvidia and that was just within the last 2 years.

While the performance leap (and low power usage) of the 1000 series was indeed a big, awesome surprise, nothing comes even close to the mind-boggling difference the first 3dfx card offered. The comparison screenshots of Tomb Raider and Mechwarrior 2 were all I needed to see to convince me I needed to save up for a 3dfx card. There wasn’t any YouTube back then, so I was unaware that it wouldn’t only LOOK better, but it’d run at a MUCH higher framerate. No one even paid attention to framerate back then, outside of “it’s unplayably slow”.

3dfx changed everything. It’s a shame they’re gone, but they held onto the Glide wrapper for too long. Nvidia’s GeForce came along with 32 bit color and support for high-poly curves in Quake 3, and it was over.

Gosh.

Lan party, playing quake.

We're all playing 320x240 or 640x480. The fast computers are hitting 15 fps.

One dude had a voodoo. 800x600 at 30 fps. With _dithering_ (never seen before. Before that every texel showed up like as if you're playing mario)

Minds exploded. There was always a group of people standing around that machine looking at it like as if it had teleported there from the future.

Nothing in computing has ever replicated that moment.

It was "holy shit!" in a pc component.

It's like country bringing F16s to WW2.

It wasn't just a proverbial game changer, it was an entirely new game.

Imagine someone dropping a GPU today that can run today's AAA titles in 8K resolution at a steady 120+ fps with free damn-near-perfect anti-aliasing, 40 bit color, and 10 bits per channel color output. And lets you run two of them together for 240 fps.
... Then 2 years later drops another GPU that lets you do the same at 16K rez. That's like what 3DFX did.

-scheherazade

Yes, but...

For me, the Holy Shit moment was Doom. We went to a Super Bowl party where a kid had Doom. I'd actually purchased it the week prior, but the 3.5" floppies I bought were corrupt and since it was from the mall I hadn't had time to go back and exchange it. But I didn't know what Doom was, I was only buying it because it had the name id on it. I had no clue what to expect. Literally entering with zero expectations.

So were most of the kids at the party. Some knew Wolfenstein. Maybe a third. The rest just knew Mario and Sonic. The kid said Doom was running around killing things. Great, so was Bionic Commando, big deal.

Yeah, it was a big deal. Jaws dropped. Minds blown. We ran around for a while just punching stuff, amazed at how cool punching stuff looked.

To date, no video game experience compares to that. None come close. Yeah, the first time I saw a 3D accelerated game it was awesome, but not that awesome. Maybe because I had a crappy S3 Virge card before going 3dfx, so there was something bridging the gap. And next steps were still cool, as I remember when Hardware T&L was a big deal, and when colored lighting was a big deal. I remember spending time just firing the blaster down a hallway in Quake 2 and watching the lighting move down the hall, or watching the flies buzz around a dead Strogg. All those were big moments, but nothing blew minds quite like Doom.

Agreed and to expand on your point, he believes so much in Avatar that hes making 3 new ones. I get that everyone loves money but god damn, dude could make money doing anything and Avatar is his fucking passion project.

4 new ones. And people can say what they want about Avatar, but the movie made 760 million domestic, and 2 billion internationally... so obviously people were going to see it.

I personally found Avatar an enjoyable movie, and the 3D has been the only movie I've actually enjoyed in a theater. i find a lot of the hate came afterwards, when it became in vogue to hate it.

I hate when people call hate trendy. Of course, this just means you enjoyed it when it was in vogue to enjoy it. Maybe you were the one following the trends, eh?

The movie was garbage. The plot was trash. The acting was trash. The effects were great, particularly the 3D, but after 10 minutes the "wow" factor wore off and you mostly stopped noticing the 3D, and the great 3D still didn't solve the standard issues 3D has with editing cuts creating a sudden and unwelcome shift in space.

The bulk of that revenue came from the 3D spectacle, and given that 3D is old hat now, with the share of overall film results coming from 3D being less each passing year... who really thinks it has a chance at repeating those numbers?

So that Dyson electric car, will it street sweep too?

ON a more serious note, it's a shame they didn't lobby harder to have their diesel particulate capture tech to be made mandatory. How many deaths would that have avoided...

It's mandatory now in the EU though... well, for diesel cars that come out post 2017 anyway. The problem is this tech stops working at low temperatures. And in Germany, we have 50% of the year low temperatures.

On the plus side, all German car makers will be offering full electric versions of all models shortly, so there's that.

But definitely not because they want to, there is a real threat our courts make the laws this time around, cities HAVE to protect their inhabitants, and that means bans for diesel cars/trucks on certain roads are not just looming, they are coming. Especially as it seems that our elections left us with no functioning government until way into November. (Which is a good thing, obviously)

I mean, maybe 10% this, but 90% China is mandating it, and what China wants goes, because that's where cars are sold.

But maybe not German cars, China would be pretty daft to not push this advantage

Not sure what you mean.
But China has announced quotas that go in place for 2019, that X% of a company's sales in China must be electric vehicles, so every company that sells in China is rushing to build enough offerings to meet that. Given that China is their biggest market, that makes sense.

And it isn't really a Chinese advantage now, because China lags behind on their EV capabilities. Part of the concern here is that Chinese companies will steal the electric vehicle tech (and, honestly, part of China's incentive is that those same companies will focus on EVs more than Western companies and surpass them, since China clearly believes EVs are the future while the US clearly disagrees. Right now, nearly 50% of EVs are Chinese made, anyway) It may become a Chinese advantage, but for right now it's still Western, and with Western companies really mobalizing to meet the Chinese demand, they should be able to keep a lead.

I mean China should, and probably will, protect it's own demand and have it fulfilled internally. There is nothing to be gained by China by importing EV mobility from Germany.... China does import the transition vehicles (hybrids) but not EV, would be kinda hard as no German car maker actually sells a functional EV car right now. Especially not for a country the size of China where charging stations are probably non-existent in the boonies.

Plug-in hybrids count, so Volkswagen and BMW have EVs under the current requirements. Just not many.
