News Comments > Age of Heroes VR Released
6. Re: Age of Heroes VR Released Jul 21, 2017, 15:01 HoSpanky

THe Rift HAD tracking issues. Those are mostly a thing of the past. I've seen a few people say the three-camera setup is fidgety, but that's likely people who think THEIR USB controller is magical and isn't getting flooded. Use two controllers if you're using three cameras. You DO have to pay for the extra camera(s?), but the cost difference isn't enough to suddenly recommend the Vive.

Valkyrie is a pretty rough ride, and a terrible introduction to VR. Barrel rolling the ship is the surest route to barf city, I never ever use that. I can stand about 3 rounds of it before I need to stop using the system for a while.

The knuckles controllers look SWEET, but keep in mind they currently DO NOT work with original base stations...you'll need to buy the controllers AND a new pair of Lighthouses. At that point you'll be halfway to another headset.

Roomscale IS easier to set up with the Vive, and a lot of the games I listed DEMAND Roomscale. The Glasses compatibility just wasn't even on my radar, got laser surgery 18 years ago, haven't regretted it for a moment. If you don't have AWFUL vision, you'll find that these headsets offer a really neat trick...the screen is literally an inch from your eyes, and while depth perception still works, the image is still RIGHT THERE. A lot of people can see perfectly clearly without glasses, depending on what those glasses correct.

Also, IF you choose Vive, please don't use ReVive for anything other than the free stuff on the Oculus store. They will need to get native support eventually, but buying things for a Vive on their store simply sends them the message that people are a-ok with paying full price for a game that they don't support properly.

I'd love it if a few Blue's regulars got VR kits, we could possibly schedule some playtimes. VR's current player counts don't lend well to just hopping into a game and playing with random people. RecRoom is the only game that's always, ALWAYS got people to play with. Some are children, and they're a mixed bag, I've had some shockingly competent child teammates. So, do your homework, pick a kit, and come play!

I have a Vive. The headset is heavier than the Rift, and isn't terribly comfortable until I got the ($100) Deluxe Audio Strap.

The $400 Rift deal is spectacular, and if I was making the decision now, it'd be hard to ignore that it's LESS than half the cost of a comfortable Vive. What the Vive has going for it is it's Roomscale is easier to set up and doesn't require getting wires from each sensor to the computer. They just need power. Rift's Roomscale is apparently less fidgety to set up than it once was, but I still see people saying it gets tricky with USB bandwidth. If your mobo doesn't have multiple USB controllers on it, you'll need an expansion card for the third camera to be reliable.

This makes it sound like the Rift isn't as good as the Vive, but honestly, neither one's setup is foolproof. The Rift's controllers are universally considered better than the Vive, but that's also partially because they had an extra year to work on them. The next set of controllers coming to Lighthouse setups (Vive, and the upcoming LG unit) are...strange looking but apparently fantastic. But...not included in current Vive packages, so consider cost there again.

I really enjoy my Vive, but at $400, get the Rift. It's good hardware. That's ignoring the 7 (supposedly fantastic) games it comes with, and the native access to the Oculus store, which has a much better selection of games...Steam is lousy with tech demos parading as games.

Either way you choose to go, there are a few games you absolutely should pick up:
1: Vanishing Realms is a short (3 hours or so) dungeon adventure that desperately needs DLC, or a sequel. It's exactly what you'd want from a VR fantasy game.
2: Eve Valkyrie is a balls-to-the-wall space dogfighter. Xbox controller is kinda required, but HOTAS for it is overkill. Arenas are packed with debris, so it's not wing-commandery...it's almost more like Descent.
3: Raw Data is a two player online co-op wave shooter. Each level gets progressively larger and longer and more visually impressive. Four very different playable characters with some unlocks to earn for each that change the game entirely.
4: RecRoom. It's free! Always populated online-only grab bag of games, set in an early 90's style gym. It's cartooney, but brilliantly made, with clever mechanics all around. Sports Bar VR is similar, but is...games you find in a fully realized sports bar. SBVR is not free, though.
5: To The Top. Crazy parkour game, no teleporting. This one's screenshots aren't impressive, but while the levels may have skimped a BIT too much on polycount, it's smooth as butter and simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying. I don't care if you think you're immune to VR's immersion, this one will have your hands sweating when you're looking for the hidden gems on each level. They're placed in truly cruel locations, forcing you to perform multiple successive perfect jumps across nothingness to grab. Levels are massive and have wildly varying themes and art styles. Soundtrack is actual songs and not a boring techno thumping, love it or hate it.

Ok done writing this novel.

There is not going to be another OS. Win10 is the base line. They will add, modify it but it's going to be win10. They are in essence taking the mac X approach from all the interviews I've read.
Whether they call it Windows 11, 12, 13, vs "Creators Update", "Fall Creators Update", "Redstone XXVII" makes little difference. Just naming. A new version is a new version.

No. Nonono. That's like saying that when they patch a game, it's a whole NEW game. The recent free DLC for Titanfall 2 doesn't make it Titanfall 3. There may be major changes, but there's two important differences:
1: they don't require a complete reinstallation
2: they don't ask for money for the update

It's still windows 10. Each year they plan to roll out a "big" update. That's the plan.

As for simon Says, he clearly thinks MS should support an operating system infinitely, since HE doesn't want to spend any money upgrading. Sure thing there buddy, how about you do YOUR job for free and see how far that gets you.

Here I was gonna say "meh, they'll probably still run" until I read to the end. Oh well, like they say, Microsoft doesn't even support those OSs anymore. I'm sure SOMEONE will complain, because hey, they don't want to upgrade their OS more than once every 20 years, but too bad.

The single player campaign to this is fantastic. It's short-ish (7 hours or so for me, did not find all secrets), but nothing feels like filler. I honestly never fired up the multiplayer, can't comment on that.

The wallrunning feels weird at first but it quickly becomes second nature, the crazy traversal is half of what makes it so fun. The story is well presented, with a few exceptionally incredible missions, the rest are "only" very good. It's one of very few games that I finished and thought "yeah, I'm gonna play through that entire thing again".

Yeah, that'd be sweet. I'm betting it'll be something like Kil'jaden or Sargaras though. One of the boring bipedal demons. Easier to animate. There's a reason Lunara bounds instead of walking.

Yeah, ORigin was screaming this at me this morning when it needed to do it's weekly shit, shower and shave (update). I would try it if my internet connection wasn't such shit. I was checking out the Battlefront trial too, 10 hours on that but the download is a 56k-frying 53 gigs! Like, WTF?! I'm not gonna be able to play the whole thing in ten hours (well...ok, probably not ALL of it...there is that weird diorama mode...lol). No thanks, EA! How bout you just gives us what we need at that moment and then send us the rest piece-meal once we get to that point, eh? No? I thought not.

=-Rigs-=

Wait...you're on dialup? Please tell me that's an exaggeration. I'm on a rather sketchy 18mb until they roll fiber through my neighborhood, that sort of download is a "welp, it'll be done by the time I get home from work tomorrow" for me.

From another one of your posts, I assume you work in an Amazon warehouse? I did that for about 10 months, starting near Christmas. Is Prime Day worse than the last week before Christmas? Prime didn't exist when I worked there.

This is one of those games I always intended to check out, but the release date kept slipping, and then it came out with no fanfare that I recall.

From the comments, it sounds like I missed out on something kinda neat but ultimately disappointing.

Tesla 3 is going into production!

Very excited for this. I won't be able to get one for a year or two, I'm sure, but that car has GOT to have every other car manufacturer watching what happens VERY closely.

What's the over/under until hackers have a workaround? 34 hours?

Reading the article, this sounds like less of a Ransomware defense and more like an attempt to force software developers to pay to get their programs whitelisted/put on the MS Store.

Everybody on Bluesnews should be dropping Windows ASAP, really. Pick your flavor of Linux for work, keep a Windows machine for gaming and nothing else, ready to be wiped at all times.

And offline backups. Sheesh.

Well, my PC is just a glorified console anyway. I play games on it, look at Imgur and Bluesnews and maybe order stuff on Amazon. That's it. So windows is still fine for my uses. I'm fairly happy with win10 IN ITS CURRENT STATE, but I do worry that it's going to head more and more toward a gated service.

Yeah, clearly people will buy damn near anything that's on sale tho, according to their statistics. I used to work in one of their warehouses for about 9 months, and people do indeed buy a LOT of junk. And dildos.

So many dildos.

The Robotron for 2017 review is actually for a game called Nex Machina. It does look pretty fantastic. Not surprising, considering its pedigree (Housemarquee). The video review sold me on it, buying it on the mobile app.

The solution isn't dumping money. The problem is the duopoly. There needs to be a legal architecture that allows people to much more freely wire their communities.

Yeah, these stupid laws forbidding muni broadband got to go.

I agree, this would solve a large part of the issue. If a rural community wants to run their own fiber network, we should let them. It's expensive! But awesome.

Agreed. My character tabs are full as well on the PS4 version, so I'll be looking forward to freeing up 2 new spaces for those.

People will react to the pricing according to how much they play. I've put in hundreds of hours into it and I can see myself putting a good deal more in what with the new class and seasons finally coming to console and all. I agree it is too much for someone who just wants to jump in and play for a few hours before moving on, though.

Then again, I picked this game up on sale on the PS Store for only $15 during a 66% off sale so getting the Necromancer for $15 feels kind of like supporting the devs that have given me and my friends so many hours of enjoyment.

Stash tabs are PC only, according to the article.

If AMD can keep this up, maybe Ryzen CAN compete with the I7. Im still leaning Intel for my next build, but this is promising. Games in general still rely on higher speeds, fewer cores. If/when that changes, I'll be switching to AMD.

A big help toward that would be getting Unreal and Unity onboard with engines focused on using as many cores as possible.

Not a CoD fan but CoD4:MW by the (original) Infinity Ward is what really propelled the series. Its engine would go on to be used (and abused) by the inept treyarch to death. After the original IW dev's left (screwed by Activision) the series went down hill. I'm not a huge FPS fan, but for me this is the best there is for FPS hands down. The single player campaign was still the most memorable of all (fps) time. I'm not a hater, so i'm going to check this out, as for any other CoD, doesnt meet the standard of the past devs.

Take Titanfall 2 for a spin. The single player campaign is done by the people who made MW, and it's pretty damn spectacular.

The only reasonable solution is to buy a cheap SSD solely for Win10 gaming. I wonder if you can buy/play their games from the marketplace without registering the OS.

Why is this the only "reasonable" solution? Seems like a pain in the ass.

When you buy a game on the win10 store it links it to your Xbox/Windows account. So you probably can't do it without registering a copy. Why wouldn't you? It's still free, with only a small hurdle.

Yeah, and the noise from thousands of drones flying everywhere will drive people nuts. Then there's the liability aspect of killing people,
pets, wildlife along with property damage. And ultimately just more robots contributing to massive unemployment. Who's going to have money to buy anything? There's nothing but downside to this, even for Amazon.

I agree with that, mostly. I think Amazon has an unrealistic view of what most of the world's housing looks like. How will they deliver to apartments? How about in the rain? When one drops out of the sky, into traffic, it'll become national news.

It's an amusing idea, sure. And if I got the chance for a delivery-by-drone, I'd happily go along with it for the novelty. But this is a case of looking for a solution to something that honestly is currently better done by humans. Packages are already being stolen off of porches, these will be shot down for their cargo.

In Microsoft's eyes, Win10 is all that matters.

I have Forza horizon 3. Yep, it's UWP. The only issue I have with it is on the rare occasion it crashes, there's no log file to see what it was upset about. Aside from that, it's fine. It's a resource hog, but that's likely more on it being set to Ultra and being open world than it being UWP.

I'm not going to say I love UWP. It just isn't a dealbreaker for me. Am I going to buy anything OTHER than Xbox crossover games on it? Pfft, no. But getting games I used to need an xbone for, PLUS having them run/look better? Yeah I'm ok with that.
