News Comments > Star Citizen Swapping DX12 for Vulkan
9. Re: Star Citizen Swapping DX12 for Vulkan Mar 19, 2017, 12:21 HoSpanky

Came in here expecting to see everyone saying "yeah, fuck windows 10" and ignoring the obvious "it's more work than expected and has delayed the game another 6 months" that they'll post when pressured on release dates.

Was pleasantly surprised that this thread is focused on the delay tactic. I feel bad for the people who got excited about the game initially and put money into it. Anyone STILL doing so is a fool.

28. Re: MS Forcing Win10 on Latest CPUs? Mar 16, 2017, 16:56 HoSpanky

I've got no hate for win10. I don't have any ads, unless they're showing up in places I don't go, which would be a rather stupid place to put them. It runs great, the ONLY issue I had with it was when I first installed it and had a pair of 970s, it saw them as a single 8gb card, and refused to believe otherwise. Disabling one let me install the drivers, and then re-enabling the second one worked as expected. SLI is dead anymore, so those 970s have new homes and have been replace with a single 1080.

Rambling! Point is, Microsoft does NOT want to keep supporting their old OS', and honestly that's their choice to not support new hardware. I'm sure Nvidia/AMD would LOOOOVE to only have to write one set of drivers, but neither one wants to be the first to say "this card only supported under Windows 10", because gamers want the latest and greatest, except when they don't because oh noes spying on me/ads, let me complain about it on my smartphone.

Man, I really hope this is "early dev cycle" work and not indicative of the whole game.

I'm finishing up H:ZD, and not once has it disappointed. Yes, you will be doing your fair share of scanning (similar to Witcher sight) and following trails, and it feels very Mass-Effecty when you're in conversations, but the story constantly surprises, and side missions are fantastically well done. The ONLY one that was a fetch quest ("get me 9 of this and 6 of that!") sneaks an interesting bit of lore into it about one of the mech types, AND the stuff you get rolls into a secondary mission where you get to play with a ridiculously OP weapon. You don't get to keep it, sadly, but it's riotously fun to use for the 3 minutes or so that it works. Each side quest is unique, and expands your knowledge of the world the game takes place in. The devs clearly made sure you never feel like your time is being wasted, while ME:A seems like they're intentionally wasting time.

With BotW and H:ZD both being game design masterpieces, I think ME:A is looking less impressive just by comparison. It may turn out to be a decent space romp! This preview certainly isn't looking promising, though.

If I paid any amount of money for Windows 10 I might be upset... but I didn't, so I'm not whining that a free OS came with a few ads (which I must have inadvertently disabled because... no fuckin ads here).

That glass house won't stand for long. There's not much worse than people whining about something completely optional that they were given for free.

Ok so I haven't seen these ads either, and I don't recall disabling more than a handful of things when I first installed Win10. And yeah, it's free (and still is, if you're willing to tell Microsoft you have an unspecific disability), and works pretty well. I'm having a hard time complaining about it, aside from that 1.5 second wait between pressing a button and being able to log in. STILL super annoying.

Exactly. If you have a Wii-u you can just buy the game as it runs and looks the same.

It's Switch's only game that I want, and I have a Wii U, so I'm fine. I AM going to buy mine from the online store, as the disc version apparently has issues streaming data reliably in areas with multiple NPCs.

As for the article, I was able to read half of it before one of their ads hijacked my phone's browser ("congratulations! You're the 1 millionth visitor!"). I TRY to not block ads, especially on blues, but I'm always punished for it. What do website operators EXPECT when that shit keeps happening?

Let's not forget that most games still aren't particularly multi-thread friendly. The games that I see hitting performance walls on my machine are doing so with a single CPU core maxed out. Throwing more cores at that won't solve anything. Oh sure, game devs *should* code their games to be more multi-core-friendly, but good luck getting already-completed games rebuilt.
When benchmarks came out, Ryzen's single core performance versus Intel was pretty sad, and no scheduler bug is responsible for that. I'm not really in the market for a new processor yet, but currently it's still looking like Intel's gonna get my money.

Holy shit RedEye, we just had to watch our company's version of that. Blaaargh.

Still, In an assembly plant, multiple robots work in unison, and it may be difficult to determine which one is going to become a problem when repairing another. The entire section of the assembly line should have been shut down. The entire case will hinge on whether or not she knew that and ignored it.

I think that not jumping straight to "no xp in custom matches" is quite the surprise. It's sad, but some people would rather do ANYTHING other than do what's expected of them. If you don't like the game enough to level up by *just playing it*, why the fuck would you CARE that you're getting levelled? You gain no advantage from it. In fact you end up looking like a moron who can't learn, as your level won't relay your skill.

I've always hated WoW's "song and dance" boss fights. And now you can't even pay for someone to help you? Heh

If all bosses were just tank n spank, raiding would be incredibly boring. They're dull enough with everyone standing around for 5 minutes to more after a wipe.

For the achievement toward flight, the LFR version of Xavius has simplified mechanics and super low damage. Even without ever doing a raid prior, you can easily get to ilvl860 just from world quests, so it's not like you'd be forced to go in weak. Even if you went in at the minimum ilvl, it's an easy ride. I'd rather they lock flight behind "actually doing stuff" than a paywall, you lose a real sense of the geography when you can just glide a mile above it to your destination. They spent a lot of time crafting the zones, they want you to look at them! The achievements are largely linked to "just playing the game".

I do feel that guilds charging real money for "ride alongs" is insane. I'm not too proud to admit I paid gold to ride along on a raid fight that gave a mount (Grove Warden). My guild couldn't pull it off and I wanted the mount.

Not sure yet.. Would use my XIM4 adapter too.

I'm buying it for the PS4 because the fiancée wants to play it as well, and it's simply easier to do that on the console. I'm not sure I'll ever play the multiplayer, I don't have PS+. None of the games I bought for the PS4 is multi, this would be the only one.

wat??

Check out the Evening Tech Bits link for this article at TechPowerUp. Matches my observations with a GTX 1080 exactly. Roundabout 50fps at 1440p all maxed out to the brim.
It also shows that the game is GPU limited, of course. GTX 980 and 1080 aren't even in the same ballpark. Whoever is claiming something silly as that probably doesn't know what the fuck they are doing or how to even access the graphics options or something like that. The game scales very nicely the fatter the graphics card.

Holy shit, CJ said something that wasn't bashing the game, included a link to proof of his argument.

The world ends tonight, possibly.
Although it'd take Luke posting something positive, without the clown emoji, to convince me it was the end of the world.

I'm on a 1080, the beta ran silky smooth with everything on max except I think shadows, but I also have a g-sync monitor which makes lowered framerate far less obvious. Lately, framerate limitations in games have been entirely due to one of my CPU cores being maxed out. Game devs still don't seem to have a good way to deal with multiple cores efficiently, one of them is usually at 100% while the others dawdle along at 60 or less.

The best part about ambiguous religious texts is that you literally get to choose when and where they apply, and if you were wrong... then you only misinterpreted it! That one didn't apply to any plagues or diseases prior to 1914? How convenient!

It would be great if you stopped trying to push your half-assed bible study on us as "fact". No one here is asking for it, and I'm certain you could find a more receptive audience for it elsewhere.

I do love how people act like one book, written by the rich to keep the poor from raiding them, is used like some cryptic predictor. The Bible is a set of Aesop's Fables, written in waves and clearly changing with popular opinion at the times of additions. It no doubt has an extensive pile of generally good life lessons, and also favorably mentions plenty of ridiculously outdated and barbaric practices. It's unbelievable how many people believe in something that has no proof of existence, like god, and yet blatantly ignore scientific proof of things like global warming. But hey, there are still people living in developed countries who honestly believe the earth is flat.

Horizon Zero Dawn earns that top spot pretty handily. It's clearly a labor of love, with a surprisingly non-sexualized female main character, a LONG introductory section that makes you give a shit about the characters involved, and has a solid premise for what you go about doing. I'm maybe a bit over half done with the game, just in terms of area discovered. The difficulty in fighting the various monsters is intimidating even on Normal difficulty, requiring you to prepare ahead of time and often retreat when your plans go very wrong. It's not worth buying a PS4 JUST to play it. but if you were even SORT of considering one, it adds a lot of weight to that decision.

This is a bit worrying for beercades. We have one downtown here called Tappers, it's pretty great. They'll probably have to start replacing the tubes with LCDs, and some of the games (specifically the X-men arcade game) may have some unsolvable issues. The xmen game uses two CRTs, one larger and mounted down inside the machine, reflected up next to the other, to get a super widescreen image. I'm not sure if the game code would actually WORK on a superwide LCD. It's one of their most popular games, as it's the rare 6-player version. Hopefully someone will see this problem coming and develop a solution before it's impossibly expensive.

Beercades are fucking great, but I do worry about their power bill. Despite the lack of authenticity, a machine running on a raspberry pi and on an LCD would cost SO much less to keep running. If they power them down overnight most lose their high scores table. I don't want to lose my ridiculously high score on Pengu! Seeing people say "how the fuck did you get 42,000, I can't get more than 400!" Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. The closest I've seen anyone get is 7200.

My question is, does it transfer off the cartridge to your fingers? Put in cartridge, pick up sandwich, WorstSammichEver?

This plays directly in front of Logan in theaters. Was a great little "bonus", and thankfully wasn't put online until the day it hit theaters. It's your consolation prize for Stan Lee's first Marvel movie skip-out. Logan was pretty great, save a painfully eye-rolly bit where they couldn't fucking resist putting something cheeso in. It earns its R rating, with a LOT of crazy gory kills, f-bombs aplenty and they even throw in a pair of tits for a moment.

But it clearly feels like they did ALL THAT to keep people from bringing their kids to a movie that's mostly about Logan and the professor's end-of-life shambling wreck of a relationship. It'd bore action-craving kids to tears. It's the first time these mutant action heroes felt human, and Jackman mostly keeps up with Stewart's level of performance, and surprisingly so does the little girl. Oh, maybe the hard R is also because the little girl is as much of a monster as Logan, putting Kick Ass' Hit Girl to shame. The final action sequence is ok, but it has a pile of last-second-characters whose acting ability pales in comparison to the primary cast, and it feels like a slide back into mediocrity.

I was unimpressed by the game on all fronts. Everything felt super stiff, like they still had 6 months of work left. Trees and grass jitter about instead of swaying, vehicles don't steer with the keyboard, they go from forward to hard left/right instead of a smooth transition like every goddamn game in the last 10 years. Enemies would pop through animations during combat, moving their head a good foot away from where it was literally one frame earlier...this wasn't super common, but enough so that it wasn't just a singular glitch. My character had NO momentum, and all vehicles felt somewhat like that except the unbelievably shitty helicopter.

In shaaaarp contrast, I've spent the last couple days playing H:ZD, which is insanely polished in every regard. I did witness a ridiculous clipping issue with two midsize mechs trying to get me, but most of the time they will trample each other and shove each other around. It's pretty incredible to see.
