The press has not been kind to this game and its not doing well on forums either judging by some of the big sites, I think I'll steer clear. It sounds very repetitive and simplistic, the flaws in the character choice and level system don't sound too fun either.

Critically panned, but I keep hearing players say it's really good. Demo, here I come!

Wait - the World of Tanks guys announce "World of Warplanes" and the Wings of Prey guys announce "World of Planes" within a couple of weeks of each other?

This is going to be interesting...

I'm still having a lot of fun with it. They just went through a rough patch with lag/packet loss (some router issue on the Eastern seaboard or something) that seems to be fixed now.

Can't hurt to try, as like in LoL, it's free!

Artillery literally ruins this game. Instead of having fun tank battles where everyone is roaming around shooting, everyone has to play the waiting game at your base until you get tired enough of waiting to suicide your tank into an artillery barrage. Remove the artillery and it's a great game.
Quoted for fucking truth.

spoken like a true child of the instant gratification generation. how about you take a moment out of your clearly beligerant playstyle and read up on how the game actually works. or move on to something like wow where you can leroy jenkins everything without thought of the consequences. not that i have any stake in the matter, but god forbid dev's listen to such stupid comments one day and ruin a perfectly good game.

I love the game! I think they should limit the number of artys in a match, though. I'm mainly an arty player, and whenever you get more than 3 on a team it does indeed turn into a slaughter...

When there are a reasonable number of enemy artilleries in a match and I'm playing a regular tank, I find that jinking and move/fire/move tactics really negate the arty advantage. While playing an arty, I look for those fools that are in line of sight of one of my allies and are just sitting there, like fools.

More room for us who enjoy playing WoT I guess, Yifes. Have fun in the other games! Hope you're not paying for any of them.

Not been using my beta gold for my trying out a different nationality's set, and don't feel like it's a grind. Games in themselves are just plain fun.

Killing 10 rats to go up a level so you can kill 10 bigger rats is a grind. Playing a fun team deathmatch game that happens to give you xp that can later be used to upgrade vehicles and equipment is not a grind.

Finally, while the matchmaking system does need work, I can say that for every match I was an A-10 going up vs. KV-3's, I had a different match where I was an A-10 going up vs. BT-2's. I think they just need to narrow up the range they allow in the same matches, so that they're selecting vehicles all within 2 tiers rather than 4 or so...

Sad for me? Nope, I'm the one having fun in a great game.

Sad for you? Yes, you're the one pining for the gnats-ass simulator that 2000-3000 grognards will play from their basement apartments in their parents' house instead of kissing girls.

Sorry to come down so hard, but it's comments like yours that killed the flight sim genre, where hardcore grognards were successful in convincing devs into changing excellent flight games into unplayable flight simulations.

Meh, to each his own I guess. Good luck with the games you like to play, I'll stick with the games I like to play.

The game is great, but won't appeal to everyone (like posts Yifes and KilrathiAce).

Yifes, progression is fine and if you're rushing headlong into open combat with tanks bigger than you then yes, you will get your ass handed to you. The game takes skill and some tactical thinking and is enjoyable as you play, so not a grind at all.

KilrathiAce, you are right: this is not a good tank game. This is the BEST tank game I've ever played (and I've been playing them for decades now).

I play US tanks (w/ some German tank destroyers) and haven't paid a dime, yet I win more than I lose. Perhaps just not your game Ozmodan?

If you haven't played it, try it out - it's free for God's sake. I've had a ton of fun w/ over 500 tank battles so far. Can't wait for Clan Wars. w00t!

Heard this as well - the game is ok, but when the PvE events stack with PvP invasions, things get crazy fun.

Still on the fence on whether I want to do another subscription game, though...

Yup, drop everything and play this game. Besides, it's free!

On youtube, check out the World of Tanks Tutorial videos (part 1, 2 and now 3) for a great look at the game.

May have been true at launch, but I just joined up last month after not playing it all year and my god the game has improved. Not only is the performance increase huge but seems that they've ironed out a ton of gameplay gaffs that were originally there.

If you like WoW but wished there was more PvP-type gaming, give this one a look.

Didn't he go after Janet Reno at some point because he said she was gay? Some election in Florida back a long time ago...

God, what a wanker. I'd feel pity for him if so many smacktards listened to his inane ramblings...

I dunno - depends on what circumstances the guy left under. If he did give ample warning after working for a long time of the project, then sure give him credit.

If he left because the grass was greener across the street and left his dev team in trouble, then I'd pull him. Gotta be annoying to be listed right under the guy who left for a $10k a year raise and caused you to work a ton of overtime to make up his loss.

Mostly common sense - how big was the guy's contribution and was he a professional when he left?

But I DO think most of you are correct: if you're not 100% sure if the guy belongs in the credits or not, pay the extra $0.04 to list the guy.

Playing WAR since it shipped and it's not too bad. The PvE stuff isn't as good as WoW (like you guys say, a clone of WoW), but the Public Quests and RvR stuff is better than anything like them in WoW. Good game for those burned out on WoW content yet still need to get their fix in (at least until Lich comes out).

PC Gaming - rough spot? Feb 20, 2008, 13:53
Feb 20, 2008, 13:53

I'm hoping that the current state of PC gaming is just a rough spot, like when the industry went from DOS to Win '95. It was also a tough time, nothing worked, and we saw massive defection to the original PS and Nintendo consoles. Then again, it's a lot easier and more rewarding to come home, push one button and start playing Gears or something on a giant HD screen.

Wonder if PC gaming will pick up again once we have a few BADLY needed Vista service packs and DX10+ improvements.

Innovation has been lacking (on consoles, too but less so for sure) which has really hurt PC games. Some exceptions that I have a lot of fun with are TF2/Portal/Orange Box, the Battlefield series, and some strat games like Civ4 and such. WoW too.

Pet meds are so great nowadays - especially for infections. Worry not for Gunner! Thinking good thoughts anyway though.
