"Word is that the "They Hunger" team has announced the transition to Source so, my friend, your wish will come true"

Yee Haww!!! I just went to Neil Manke's site (http://www.planethalflife.com/manke/) and its true!!

um, not quite. Neil said that Valve has given him their support. he also said that it is a good *first step*, but many other factors need to be worked out. just because Neil is interested and Valve gave him the go-ahead, doesn't mean he'll be able to assemble a team and overcome other obstacles to get it done.

that said, i do hope he manages to pull it off... it'll be fun to see what Neil will do with the Source engine. he did things with Q2 that were always creative and surprising, if not always the best in terms of gameplay.

IMO Doom3 and Black & White are the two most overrated games of all time.

i'll agree with Black & White, though i did enjoy D3. B&W was fun for maybe and hour or two, then the precision clicking turned it into a real dog to play. the idea was cool, it was just that the interface was so annoying it made the game unplayable for me.

The views of the few have eroded the freedoms of the many.

what are you basing this "fact" on? has there ever been polling conducted to determine what percentage of the population does vs. what percentage does not want to be subjected to the ridiculous attention grabbing schemes of today's celebrities on prime time TV?

i for one am glad to see people make an effort to clean up the show. if Janet wants to show off her b00bies, why doesn't she do it in Playboy or some other pornographic forum, like everyone else? what she did has nothing to do with freedom or values... it was a shock-based publicity stunt and nothing more.

i'm happy to know that prime-time public TV still adheres to some standards. if i want to look at naked women, i know where i can get that kind of material... i don't need it to be broadcast unexpectedly on public TV... i don't want the added pressure of wondering what any children in my home may be subjected to if i leave them in front of a football game.

i like to know what i am getting in terms of media. that is why rating systems exist for movies and games. so i am aware of the level of maturity i believe is required to experience the media i choose to indulge in. so i don't let my kids watch "LOST" and then have to wonder if pamela anderson will perhaps guest-start on the show running around topless and shouting "Fuck!!!" i know that won't happen... because LOST isn't that kind of show.

and neither is football, and i want it to stay that way.

shacknews had a link to http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/

thanks for the link, elvis! that is a pretty cool demo... i wasn't aware of HDR lighting until reading this thread, and the demo makes it clear what a huge leap in realism is possible.

That lead paragraph should be: "$95 may not seem like a huge deal these days, but 40,000 computers at $95 each adds up to quite a lot."

actually, i think you missed it as well, blue. what they are trying to get across is that $3,800,000 might not seem like it will add up to a lot of systems (valued at $2,000 each it only produces 1,900 systems), but if you take into account the fact that they only cost $95 each, then suddenly you find yourself getting 40,000 systems. so, the "a lot" they are trying to evoke is the number of systems, not the final dollar value.

in any event, it is a really shitty way to open the article. i had to read that paragraph 4 times before i understood what they were trying to get across.

Me? I'd just start the season a week later, but what do I know?

i'm with you on this one, blue. the football season always seems to begin too early anyway... baseball isn't even over yet, it is still very hot, and a lot of people would rather still be doing outdoor activites at that time of year. i can't imagine one ill effect that would arise from bumping the season back one week.

reply to nin's reply to warpig's banddirector SSTTHL2T2T2:

if G-man is future gordon, (which i think is a great theory, btw) then why does he speak like some kind of machine? he doesn't sound at all human... i'd love to buy into the "future self" theory, but this one thing keeps me from doing so.

You may think so, but trust me, the advantages of having guide information are wonderful. Not having to know when networks play games with their programming just rocks.

zathrus, don't you run into problems with the new time tactics though? shows like "LOST" run until 9:01, instead of stopping at 9:00. this way the network screws you into missing the first minute of a show (that starts at 9:00) on another network, and tries to keep you watching their channel instead. if you tell the TiVo (or DVR, whatever) to record "LOST", won't it stop at 9:00, and then you miss the last minute??

i, for one, am looking forward to this expansion. i didn't expect D3 to be like any other game - i took it for what it was and enjoyed it. the game was good, and the expansion will likely improve on the original. bring it on!

to anyone who bought Half Life2 from best buy and still has their receipt:

they put the game on sale for $40 this week, so you can go in with your receipt and they'll give you $15 back (assuming you paid the full $55 price they've had until now) in accordance with their price match policy... well worth the trip for $15, imo... especially for me, since it's only 1 minute from my house!

Hey all, for those of you keeping score, I'd like to let you know that I finally got a job (woot!)

congrats, complicity! i too started a new job just about 6 weeks ago - a mere 2 weeks before unemployment ran out. and i too have to get up early (5:30am) for the first time in years. so wtg... i know all too well the stress and worry that being out of work for a long time can cause.

here's hoping it turns out to be a good job!

Eh, give 'em a little vacation. They've earned it

i can't deny that... it would just bother me if they spent a year making an expansion that didn't have real content and plot development... if a third party dev makes it while they work on HL3, then i'm happier playing an expansion that is fun, but not as meaningful to the plot!

if they did a Father Gregory expansion, we could finally find out where all those loose saw blades came from!

heh.... yeah, funny how just what you need is always just lying around in the vicinity! those blades were my favorite weapon in the game... hacking 3 or more zombies in half in a single shot was very satisfying! i would carry them around as far as i could, but eventually i'd lose 'em.

and yeah - a ravenholm themed expansion could be very cool indeed... there are so many possibilities in that little scenario. and gregori is an awesome character. you're right, nin, now that i'm thinking about it, there are so many different things they could do with expansions... SST: Ravenholm, Barney missions, co-op stuff with Gregori, a mission with Alyx and DOG, missions to help with the underground railroad, you could teleport to Xen to help the Vortigaunts, G-Man could send you on another mission to a different Citadel, you could have to free people from those metal "pods" in some giant complex... that is one good thing about a vague open-ended plot - the possibilities for expansion are endless!

May even be Valve putting together the expansion

hmmm... well, i hope that it significantly advances the story in that case. i thought the expansion would just be a diversion until HL3 arrives... and that HL3 would be the true continuation of the story. if the expansion is going to delay the release of HL3 (as it will if Valve devs it) then i am going to expect a whole lot more out of it!

i was hoping that Valve had secretly contracted a dev for an expansion, and that it was already a few months (or more) along in it's dev cycle... much like id giving Q4 to Raven while the D3 engine was still in the works. speaking of which... man, what is going on with Q4 anyway???

my vote for the expansion would be something centered around Barney, with cameos by the rest of the cast... wouldn't it be cool to see Gordon from the perspective of Barney???

Here's hoping we don't have to wait another 6 years for the next chapter!

i'll second that! i'm hoping they decide to use the Source engine to make it... meaning it will be out much quicker than if a new engine has to be built. best case scenario is that someone is working on an expension pack, and Valve is already putting HL3 together...

/rant off (Porn issues annoy me)

i think the real issue is that some people object to porn - and they have every right to. i feel it is Blue's responsibility to at least warn his viewers that they will encounter such content by clicking on one of his links. people who come to bluesnews do so with the expectation of viewing game related news, and link of humorous or interesting content - not links to sites with uncencored pornographic material. personally, i have no problem with the image itself, but i do think a warning label is warranted in this case.
