The reporting of it as news implies that it happened recently. Gabe said that in late 2003, after HL2 had been delayed, explaining that it had been done to make the game as high-quality as Valve could manage. Never did like the original UT that much. Just an average game to me. So I really looked forward to trying out UT2003, but the demo really put me off. The spead was so fast I could hardly aim. And I got a pretty good machine so frame rate is high. How they managed to ruin CTF, I'll never know.
Isn't it more acceptable to stop modded Xboxes from connecting and playing and not ban them forever?

If they said "When this game is ported to the PC to make use of the Gef4 and 5 cards (the Xbox only has a Gef3), it'll really shine as only a game can on the PC!"
That wouldn't really inspire potential Xbox owners to go out and get one.
