I kinda like the game. It's a very fun time sink, with a long story and has an epic feel to it.

You guys should definitly try it out. It gets lots better after the first act.

Heh, that's why team/skill building is so important. You have to coordinate skills and builds so they cover multiple tactics and protect you against counter-tactics.

8 players * 8 skills = 64 skills

That's a lot and can include almost everything you need if you plan it smart.

If all you see in PvP is target and attack, well, then my friend, you didn't get it.

PvE the same you say? What do you do in other MMORPG games?

You click on a monster and wait until the auto-attack is finished. If you're lucky (or lower level) you kill it, otherwise you die.

At least in GW you have a great skill system with counters, different types of attacks, magic spells etc... Sure, in easier maps you don't really need to choose your skills that wisely, but that changes on the harder levels.

On a different note, has anyone here tried much of the PvP?

PvP is why GW was build for and where it really shines. Remember; these guys worked on Starcraft, Warcraft etc... so they were determined to implement strategic elements into the game.

In PvP Arenas you can play 4 vs. 4 (random) and 8 vs. 8 (random or team).

In Tombs you always have a team of 8 but there are lots of different game types:

- Team Deathmatch (you just kill the other team)
- Last man standing style
- Capture the Relic (CTF GW style)
- King of the Hill (you have to hold center at the end to win)
- Priest maps (you have certain strategic points where you put flags to hurt enemies, priest NPCs resurrect so if they die your team is no longer resurrected)

Now, things can get nasty in Tombs where more teams play on the same map. You can have 8v8 or 8v8v8 or even 8v8v8v8.

And let's not forget 8v8 Guild vs. Guild warfare on different guild halls with different strategic elements and a world wide ladder (ladder.guildwars.com).

So in short; PvP is where it's at. Especially with all the team/skill builds and combos you can come up with the game gets really deep and hardcore.

Try it!

So why are ALL runes worth 25 gold?

All the trader NPCs work on supply & demand. If a certain NPC is full of stock of a particular item he only gives you the minimal amount until a certain time or his stock gets less.

If it was my game, the pre-made PvP characters would go so far as to allow you to completely unlock everything, and customize the build down to the smallest detail. People wanting to actually work for their skills and items would be free to do so via PvE. Simple. Can't understand what the problem with this would be..

The problem with this is that it would make the game uninteresting for RPG (PvE) players. Why should they do the missions or quests for skills and weapons, if you could just create a PvP character with everything unlocked? The RPG side looses a certain appeal and the PvE group is already very unhappy with the recent PvP changes.

Some would even buy the game and not even touch the PvE story and quests, and I think ArenaNet wants people to experience the PvE story, because it's one of the primary reasons for next expansion packs that will continue the GW saga.

Oh, about the skill points and XP; there are some changes coming in the next streamers updates.

Basically they are creating a separate experience for PvP players. That will allow them to add PvP based rewards, that reward you for your skill in various PvP arenas, Tombs and GvG maps. There will also be additional options on how you can use certain rewards you gained. It certainly sounds interesting and will probably go live in a week or two if everything works out ok.

I think they did the right thing. There is no other way to deal with cheaters, exploiters and bot users if you don't want the game to become full of this crap. The message has to be clear: "we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour period.".

I think Gaile Gray in the latest Fansite Friday interview said it best.

"This isn't to say that every single update is going to delight each and every player. With any given update there is going to be a certain percentage of players who are not happy with the changes. For instance, some players were really into the whole process of farming for loot, and today they're concerned about the recent changes that made farming less profitable. But the game is undergoing an evolutionary process, and some of the concerns being expressed in the short-term will be addressed with planned alterations in the longer term. It may not be apparent where things are moving, but positive and satisfactory changes are in the works and will be incorporated into the game with the same care that we have shown with all the other updates. On the other hand, players who had expressed concerns about having difficulties in capturing skills are delighted with the new Signet of Capture system, and there seems to be universal approval for that change."

Isn't competition and being the best in the world the best reward you can get?

What do you get when you beat another clan in HL2/Q3/D3/...? Fame, victory, respect, a better spot in the ladder etc...

"And if they are so absolutely determined to make runes and upgrades rewards for playing the game, then as Creston has already said, they should be giving PvPers their item rewards in PvP, for crying out loud!"

That would only favor the hardcore PvP crowd, which would leave the casual PvPers out of the loop.

You see, things like these were (and still are) discussed on the alpha testing forums for years. All of the suggestions you guys mentioned and tons others have been evaluated and even tested internally with temporary test builds.

Before ArenaNet makes any big changes, they have to carefully consider how are these changes going to affect the gaming world at large and in the long run. It's not just as simple as adding the option to unlock all skills and be done with it. The game has to appeal to both player groups and at the same time shouldn't favor one group of players to the other.

In my 2 years of alpha testing I've seen what these guys are capable of and I'm 100% confident they will keep fixing and improving the game until the players and the developers are happy with it. But it’s not a simple process. You learn these things when you’re in constant contact with them and where you can see first hand how these decisions are made and executed.

The "unlock all" was only a weekend feature, which was said many times. ArenaNet always planned that players, be it PvE or PvP, will have to earn skills and not just get them from scratch.

This was their design concept from day 1.

I'm actually more of a RPG (PvE) player than PvP. Don't see anything wrong with the way they made SoCing easier. It was the best change they could have done.

Rune traders are also great, since not all players have the time to farm for runes.

I think the changes are fantastic.
