27. Re: TF NERFED Sep 27, 2007, 17:25 The Raven

Another person that has no idea what makes a game "dumbed down" or suffer from consolitis.

Agreed. I think TF2 is superior to TF1/TFC in every way. There are people that whine about the lack of grenades, or how it is so much simpler... I just ignore them. Time will tell, and I think TF2 is gonna be a good game for a long time.

TF2 is unique as it lets you shoot and walk through teammates. That entire game mechanic would have to be disabled in order for friendly fire to work, which is probably something they simply didn't bother putting any time into.

Not exactly. You can walk through teammates, but you can't stand on them; you get shoved apart quickly, but it prevents an asshat from blocking a door or a spawn with their body or their engineer emplacements.

You can shoot through teammates, but only when you're really close. You can't shoot bullets or projectiles through teammates who are farther away. This, again, prevents asshats from killing you or interfering with your ability to play (like standing in front of your rockets so you kill yourself when they blow up next to you).

But when your teammates are farther away, like 20 feet (ish), your rockets, bullets, etc will blow up when they hit them (doing no damage of course).

It's also worth noting that you CAN block YOURSELF. An engineer cannot walk through their own buildings.

That's because they hate change, not because it actually IS slow and dumbed down. I've been playing TF since when it was first released on Quakeworld and the only servers you could find were aussie servers... I *love* TF2. It is noticably better than TFC; the spy is more effective, the medic rocks hardcore, and the game does not get bogged down into defense-fests. The maps are spectacular, the art and voices lend a huge amount of personality to the game.

I believe most people who complain about it are only complaining because they're comfortable with the old way, so 'new is bad'.

Ok, played from 2am my time (when it activated) until 730am. I'm not operating on much sleep right now, so please forgive any slurring in my typing. :-)

I had problems launching it at first... it kept saying it was downloading updates for 1 second, then exit without launching. I got it to run by disabling auto-updates... then it launched fine, and I had no crashes for the entire 5 hours I played.

I really did miss the grenades. The cluster grenade (ie, bundle of dynamite) they showed in the long gameplay video was gone too... there is no 'grenade' key at all, for any class, except for the normal and pipe grenades the demoman uses. I don't mind this, but it did confuse me.

There is no easy way to 'escape' out of choosing what type of thing to build when you're an engineer. If you accidentally press 4 (build) instead of 3 (wrench), you can't get rid of the menu without choosing to build something. VERY annoying. I suspect the same problem exists for the spy (choosing disguises), though I didn't play it enough to see.

As far as I can see, shooting an invisible spy does not make them appear, contrary to one of the tips that scrolls by.

Other than those two gripes... GOD was it fun. The maps were wonderfully designed. Other people commented about how nice they looked, but what I noticed was how excellently they were designed to avoid confusion... I almost never got lost, despite it being the first time playing on the maps. Of course, the ones based on the old maps were easy, but even the completely new maps were a breeze to navigate. That is HARD to do, VERY hard, so my hats are off to them.

The Medic was a blast to play... running around healing everyone, trying to not die myself, and every now and then rampaging on invincibility. Woot! I also enjoyed my old favorite the demoman a lot.

The Pyro was difficult to play, but I suspect I'll get better. I was standing too far back a lot of the time... like every single flamethrower I've ever seen in a game, it's difficult to judge how far your flames are actually going. You have to be very close for them to hit at all. But if you DO get that close, enemies die VERY fast, just as fast as if I was a heavy.

All the taunts and chatter that the characters do is superb! It really brings them to life. You automatically thank a medic when he heals you, the heavy really does shout just like in the teaser video while spraying his cannon, all the characters talk smack and make quips all the time, without the player having to make them. It's a very chatty game.

The controls were crisp, and the UI excellent, but I expect that from Valve. Nothing really new there. If someone claims they don't know what's going on, I'm gonna be pretty annoyed from now on... there's no excuse anymore, they have a VIDEO for each map that explains it! And, of course, the built-in voice system works great, just like in all their other games.

It is simpler, I admit... I miss concussion grenades in particular. But the balance is wonderful, the design is dreamy, and the maps are tight.

I'm not getting much sleep this week I think.

I'd have bought it, if they didn't have such a horrible way to aim. Apparently pointing and clicking is too complex to program.

So was the previous statement that it was gold a lie, or are they just completely unable to find a publisher for their game? Is it crap?

Still looking forward to it. I never drove myself into a frenzy of need, so the numerous delays haven't really dulled an edge that was never there to begin with. I still think it'll be a fun game.

7. Re: I swear Aug 20, 2007, 18:11 The Raven

But I fail to see how the Unreal Engine does anything so much better than iD or Valve or Crytek that those engines are 2nd class.

It's not that the engine itself is better, or innovative, or anything like that. It's that the tools to edit, update, and program the game are significantly easier to use. Easier to use means that more content can get made in the same amount of time. More content in less time means it's less expensive to create the game, end-to-end. And so people license the Unreal engine, because the tools are just that much better.

Sure, the 'pretty factor' isn't quite as good for Unreal. But that's not as important as getting things done and shipped.

5. Adult Oriented? Jul 31, 2007, 13:20 The Raven

What makes 2Moons an 'adult' MMO? Do the NPCs swear? Do players have dangling genitalia?

Just seems odd. Most of the people playing WoW are adults... I don't really see how it is 'child oriented', though it does lack explicit blood or words.

Does 'adult oriented' mean the game will lack humor, and be dark and brooding?

Another excellent browser is the All Seeing Eye... sadly, they got borged by Yahoo, and it's rarely updated or improved nowadays. But it's an unbelievably snappy update program.

It would take just a few days work to make improvements to their server browser. It saddens me that they haven't.

1. Tech ARP are Whiners Jul 19, 2007, 13:00 The Raven

Their article was stolen, quite irresponsibly, by a blogger. They definitely have the right to complain. And Google gives them a perfectly reasonable method to do so... write them, assert that copyright infringement has occurred and that you are the copyright holder, and they'll probably terminate the account once they've verified the claim is valid.

But Tech ARP goes on to whine how hard it is to send a fax rather than email, how unfair that they have to be the copyright holder (!?), how rude it is that Google won't just take them at their word and takedown the offending blog the moment they email them.

How many fucking articles have we had about people abusing the DMCA (you know, that piece of law that lets alleged copyright holders takedown a site immediately, even if it turns out their copyright claim is invalid; that law that most of the Internet has been making fun of for 8 years)... hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Tech ARP hasn't written or linked to some of those articles. But as soon as it's their shit that's ganked, they want a free ride. Well fuck them... they've lost my readership. Google isn't asking for anything unfair... just a request, in writing, from the copyright holder. If that's too goddamn hard for Tech ARP, and they have to spend three hours writing up a bitchy article about it, then screw them. They don't deserve copyright protection.

Edit: typos

While I'm really tired of vehicles in games (I don't mind jeeps, motorcycles... I hate tanks, planes, mechs), I really never understood the appeal of skiing. Taking an obscure glitch of the game engine and turning it into a must-have skill? Bullshit. Just like bunny hopping and wall-strafing, I think it should die. On the topic of must-learn game-glitches, I don't mind grenade jumping or rocket jumping though, because they are an optional skill... not everyone is willing to sacrifice that much health/armor for mobility.

But skiing in tribes was really annoying. Kinda like air control and slope running in Steam games, I don't really mind that it's there... but I detest when it is actually catered to and encouraged by mapmakers.

If you want high mobility, I'm all for increasing the energy on the backpack, or allowing one time jetboosts or something... but requiring noobs to learn how to bug the game engine in order to play remotely competetively is not a good game design decision in my opinion.

Is there a choice in Episode 1 & 2 (or option) to turn off that whole (Source Engine) sliding on ice feeling the character has while making sideways movements in game?

There is a single setting that you can change, the ground friction setting, that determines how fast you start/stop, and is what I think you're referring to. You can enable cheats to change it. No, I don't remember what it is, and I'm not motivated enough to look it up right now.

I quit this game recently due to the rampant botting. It seemed the only one that wasn't afk in that game was me.
I think this happens a lot on new servers... the gold farmers are the first to move in, to make money to sell to the legit players.

On old, populated servers I haven't noticed it at all. I've seen maybe one or two people I'm sure were gold farmers in my entire time on Silver Hand (which was an opening-day server).

iD has people smart enough to basically invent the FPS as an industry, but it took Epic to make altifire weapons, making Epic a better technological company.
Just in case anyone was not sure, this is sarcasm.

Personally, I like both engines. iD tends to make faster, more efficient engines that push the graphical boundaries. Epic is more about making an engine that's easier to hack in, with a more cohesive and easy to use ide. Different strokes for different development houses, etc.

News Comments > Games Not an Addiction, Yet
13. Re: Video Games are addictive Jun 25, 2007, 12:40 The Raven

Video games are addictive. Doctors are stoopid (sic) and they lie. You can't trust them for anything.

Well, that's one take on it. Me, I'm not quite in the 'doctors made it through 10 years of medical school by being stupid' camp. And it seems a bit absurd to distrust doctors, AND lie down under a knife they wield when you have cancer/appendicitis/whatever.

Are you into homeopathy as well Woody?

What else do people do when they sit in like that? They masturbate don't they? They sit down, grab themselves, and start yanking and pulling like they yank and pull the video game controller.

Why are you reading Blue's News? It's a news page ABOUT gaming. If you think it's such a nasty, dirty habit I'm kinda confused why you're here at all, commenting about something you detest.

Or are you more like a lewd pastor; talking about how sinful and nasty everything is, while shamelessly doing the very thing you call sin in the back room?

And I don't know about you, but playing World of Warcraft or Counterstrike or Team Fortress isn't much like masturbating. It's a lot more like playing a game. They're games. Are you gonna compare pushing the 'Boggle' dice button to rubbing a clit? Or compare driving a stick-shift to jerking a guy off? I think you have some seriously odd fetish with controllers, and you're projecting your oddity onto everyone else.

Trust me, you're one of the few (or the only) person who thinks playing a video game feels like masturbation.
