It's funny how when they're cornered they always pull this tired phrase out. How do you know he isn't going to pick it up and try it? He's just saying what a lot of people who have played and enjoyed the first two games (not you, you never played) think of the turn towards over-simplified game mechanics. They're called opinions, kid. His come across well. Yours...well...don't. About the most I can tell from your ramblings are that you hate board games and think people with opinions different than yours are elitist. By the way genius you already graced us with your "idea" already in a older post, although it's easy to see how you'd forget. I bet a thought can breeze through that empty space between your ears damn quick.

So while on one side we have people who have written the game off we have this freak wasrad who, by his own admission, hasn't even played any game in the series yet somehow knows A.) the previous games were "too much like a boardgame", B.) that this one comming out is {insert way overdone lavish praise}, and C.) Expressing an opinion makes you an "elitist"...whatever the fuck that means. Before I write off this thread completly I suggest you take some of the money Taldren gave you to cut and paste their propoganda and actually play the fucking previous games you've written off before playing the same way I'll be checking out SFC3 before I slam/praise it.

I havn't seen this particular trailer yet but I have seen other movie's of the game in action. My biggest worry about this game is what KilrathiAce has pointed out: it's dumbed down. Customaztion means nothing to me. There were already a LOT of different ships to choose from. Never did I feel the game was less for lack of customization. Yes...yes...I'll be fair here. The previous two SFC games' interface was not user-friendly, but it was the wealth of detail and the number of options I had to play with that attracted me to this game in the first place. Trying to go down the "mass market appeal" path now seems too risky and alienates a lot fo the existing player base. Yes the game was complex. Those are the games that stay on my hard drive for than a few weeks when others have already run out of gas. I'm going to check out the game when it gets released but if it looks like the guts have been ripped out of this game at least I have SFC2.

Heh...indeed. I've been looking forward to this game for awhile. Heard such good things about Europa Universalis. Looks like the 4th quarter is going to be great for strategy!

Let's preface this with information you need to know. I'm a serious MOO freak. Mr. Barcia and the rest of the lamented SimTex team delivered some fine games for me to continue to play to this day. I've followed the development of MOO3 for sometime and by and large I havn't written off the _gameplay_. The graphics for space combat, however, are beyond "low tech." I'll be the first one to tell you good graphics do not a game make...but they have to be at least pleasing to look at. I'll be picking this game up first chance I get but will this game's dated appearence drive potential buyers to competing games (Civ 3, Hearts of Iron, etc.)?

The only niche FunCom is trying to fill is that huge gaping void where some profit should be. You gotta give this company credit, though. Taking what was going to be a part of a true expansion, dividing it up into "not-quite-an-update, not-quite-an-expansion" sized chunks, and then charging their player base for it takes a set of brass ones so big they defy logic. I'm sure it helps though the only people left playing at this point are the truly insane who can accept the metaphorical equivlent of being romanced with a plunger, sideways.

Quote from the article:

"The arcade edition is so realistic that Derrick Bartlett, president of the American Sniper Association and director of a Florida company that trains police snipers, theorizes that the D.C. shooter could have learned tactics from such games <as Silent Scope, Wolfenstein, Doom, & Quake>

'They could give you a feel for tracking moving targets,' Bartlett told The Washington Post. 'They could desensitize you to the idea of killing a human being.'"

So these outmoded pieces of software will turn me into an expert marksman (who can hit moving targets no less). Funny there's no mention about America's Army. I mean for f's sake....Sniper F'ing School. Of course you're not going to see a mention of that game. Three guesses why...
