News Comments > NVIDIA Portable Announced
19. Re: NVIDIA Portable Announced Jan 7, 2013, 12:49 DG
Not sure I can fathom what they were thinking with this.

Living-room electronics requires a huge amount of marketing and brand presence. I'm not sure Nvidia has that. AFAIK Nvidia have only ever sold to enthusiasts and manufacturers.

When I saw they were running Android I figured Android would allow them to bypass that; but then it seems they're not running stock Android nor the android store?

I guess at worst it's a tech demo for other manufacturers.

Mark of the Ninja gets a mention in several of those GOTY articles, 50% off today on Steam.

Is it a must-buy? I have tons of games still to play including XCOM and Dishonoured as it is, and I can't put down Planetside 2.

Alternately, Steam is showing it's backup tool is available for the game, 9.8gb. Not sure how that plays with the launcher but Bludd's directions make it seem viable.

So far the only "must get" skills seem to be pretty cheap in certs (i.e. experience points).

You could spend quite a bit more for tank and gunship/fighter upgrades. The aircraft especially, people specialise in those i.e. spend all their points/real cash there.

For infantry though, you're competitive enough out of the gate. If you get the drop on someone who's maxed out, you're going to win. If you both surprise each other and you've got significantly better aim, you're going to win.

Take the most ostentatiously contentious cert upgrade - health boost. The max health boost you can get, which very few people have yet, is 25% - but, not really. Shields are basically just a regenerating health bar, so total advantage in TTK is actually only about half the health boost. And you need 1211 certs for 25%. For a 15% boost, which will leave you at a net 5% disadvantage or something compared to that rare fully specced guy, it costs 61 certs, which you should get in a single session - in an hour when rolling with a decent squad.

Personally I figured I'd be happy to spend the equivalent /$ of a new game on this. I've only spent 4, on a 7-day EXP booster since I figured I'd be playing a lot this weekend anyway. I haven't felt the need to buy any items yet and I now have about 600 cert points racked up that I haven't even thought what to spend on.

Admittedly the real-money does not seem very good value as you don't get a lot for the money. That you don't need the items is one thing, but it'd be nice to be buying more choices. I might sink some real money into it if/when they have another 2x or 3x "station cash" sales.

The game has problems but P2W isn't one of them.

If you do play, bear in mind the game is 1000x more fun when you're in a good platoon, using voice comms, waypoints etc. The biggest issue for the game IMHO is that is not reliably available.

to easy to cap and lose bases and there realy is not enough reason to hold them or keep defending them.
I think the part of the issue here is everyone defends from inside the base, which is easy to get trapped in, while enemy continually respawns at their sundies.

There's no point to this unless they're just holding them off while other groups spawn nearby (i.e. outside) and take out the sundies. But then there's the enemy tanks, to get your own tanks the next vehicle spawn is so far away there's something else to do.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good mouse? Liked this MX510 which is finally giving up the ghost, so from my attempts at research suggests the G400 is the default replacement? (I can't see the MX510 at my usual stores.)

I should probably replace this "fUnc" mouse pad aswell. SteelSeries 4D? 4HD?

Mostly just looked like it did because it threw stuff into free ram in case it might speed up the next thing you're going to do. This made it look like it was using up a lot of ram but really all that stuff could be flushed instantly so was still free.

had a horrible file indexing system and oh yeah did I mention that it was bloated beyond belief?

True this was crap, but the HDD system isn't that much better with W7 either since it can take forever to display the contents of a folder that's not been opened for a while, even with thumbnails disabled.

Dont forget the absolute retarded but typical corporate bullshit with Vista being required for DirectX 10!!

W7 didn't change anything about needing Vista or newer for DX10...

Sure Windows7 is what Vista was supposed to be at launch, but I still say fuck Microsoft for releasing a half-assed product.
Again though the only reason W7 isn't half-assed is that they got through what they needed to with Vista. If they'd skipped out Vista then the whole 64bit drivers issues would just have happened with W7.

Help me out here - I think I understand the basics of 'ping' but I may be oversimplifying it. A ping of 250 is actually 250 milliseconds, or one full quarter of a second. In other words, as I understand it, with that ping you would have to conceivably be aiming where your opponent will be in a quarter second from when you fire. Is that correct? A bit of a noob question I know but being a singleplayer gamer my whole life I have never really paid much attention to multiplayer idioms. Never really paid much attention to networking at all until only recently.
Sort of. I'm really rusty on this stuff but...

The ping is usually round-trip time, so it's how long it takes your cpu to send a packet, the packet to get there, the server to process it, packet to get back and your cpu to process it.

However that does not mean your latency is actually half the ping.

Remember what you see on screen is already out of date by the time it took you to get the data from the server. So by the time the server gets your response the total gap is indeed the full ping time.

This is based on Quake-style netcode where everything is done on the server. I'm not going to try and explain or even pretend to understand other approaches because whenever I read anything about them I get annoyed - IMHO the server should be king and arbiter, any other way is stupid and unfair.

It also assumes there is no timenudge/prediction/hocus-pocus going on. Some games try to reduce the effect of latency by putting info on screen that is a guess about the future. When it is accurate it does effectively negate the latency and you aim where you want to hit. But when it is wrong it can double or treble your effective latency because it showed you the player being distance-moved-in-100msec to the left of where he actually was when packet was sent out to you, but by the time you get it he might actually have gone distance-moved-in-100msec to the right thus the error is 200msec. However, by the time that is worked out it is again making another prediction a futher distance-moved-in-100msec to the right so the total on-screen adjustment is 300msec.

Again I favour Quake approach here because the default timenudge was 0 but player could set it to their preference. It's more common for games to force some prediction and not even tell you that it is doing it.

The average casual gamer wants to shoot where he wants to hit, therefore wants prediction. The average "skilled" player wants to control leading the target etc so wants minimum error, i.e no prediction (well okay, maybe a small amount of timenudge if has highish ping; a small amount of timenudge should be quite accurate, I would think the errors should scale up dramatically with the level of tn applied, probably logarithmically or exponentially)

This all gets a lot more complicated once you factor in the server calculating the gamestate in intervals, it taking time to do so, the latency in your cpu/graphics card/mouse etc

Vista [...]
I switched to Vista after SP1 and never had any issues, it was a noticeable improvement over XP. A much more noticeable improvement than W7 was over Vista.

Vista simply took the hit of the teething issues, like a lot of hardware needing new drivers that weren't ready at launch. Like the switch to 64bit. Early-days Vista got the issues out of the way, so they weren't there for W7.

It was Vista that actually achieved everything and did the work, W7 just stepped in to take the credit.

Yeah 250 isn't viable IMHO. 165 was awful for me on the EU servers, I couldn't play on that. 100 on East US is fine, though a bit of a crapshoot at range. In particular I can't hit anything that flies, though unsure how much of that is me being crap.

While we're here, htf do you use the jetpack? Isn't it the F key? It's worked once and never again. I can see the power bar thing in the bottom-right corner so pretty sure I do have it equipped, but nothing happens.

20. Re: More Big Picture Details Nov 28, 2012, 14:07 DG
Can't see anyone being surprised about this, absolutely standard for a MP game that necessitates official servers only.

I am seeing a little bit of cheating, I have seen several players who are clearly able to turn on extreme lag at will.

Generally though, still undecided about this game.

It didn't help that the EU servers are awful for me: 165+ ping due to awful traceroute, when I can get into some Dutch TF2 servers with less than 30 ping. Though, given how screwed up things get I think their CPUs aren't up to it either. The East US servers are tolerable (~100 ping) however that's not something I'm willing to pay for.

Gameplay... I find myself always in one of the following situations:
  • lots of boring times, waiting for transports to get moving, transport getting shot down, or whatever

  • defending a significant attack is just frustrating and pointless (suspect it would be a lot more efficient for everyone just to give it up and attack something else instead).

  • being part of a big, organised assault steamrolling through the map is fucking awesome

  • running around with a small squad grabbing small bases, or defending them from similar enemy is good fun

  • I suspect game has a lot of long term appeal if I can get into some semi-organised squad/clan/whatever, but I suspect only plausable if I'm putting money into the game, and I can't see myself doing that unless they fix the EU server routing.

Hold your horses folks, it's a Charlie Demerjian article...

Broadwell BGA, back to LGA for two rolls after that, who knows after that. But anyway they're putting just about everything onto the CPU so MB is just there to plug stuff into.

Shit even with all BGA all that would matter for gaming is whether you can plug in a Nvidia or AMD discrete graphics card.

MB might be important for enthusiasts because it's where most of the decisions lie, but eliminating the need for those decisions does not similarly kill gaming PCs.

    Happy birthday Blue!

In other news, the Steam autumn sale is on, as predicted yesterday. Annoyed to see Civ G&K 10 cheaper than I paid a week ago! On the upside, picked up XCom for 10 off so...

Beware not everything seems to be working right - if I add to basket direct from the sale page I get the new price, if I go to the game's page however it's at the old price. Double-check before you buy!

I got bored of Crysis 1 though made it quite a ways in and it was okay in parts.

I don't think I got through the first level of Crysis 2 before deciding I was bored and not in the mood for the game. Haven't found the mood to have another go. That's not exactly a fair assessment of the game, but sometimes I just start something, immediately think "oh not this crap again, I have better things to be doing".

I do not have any reason to expect things will get a lot better for 3.

Yeah I'm not exactly surprised that they've been working on a new engine given Source is nearly 8.5 years old though there was a possibility they could just do a major increment. I would also expect it to launch with HL3, except that I do not think it prudent to go around expecting HL3.

Quite enjoyed it, though my standards for 12-minute web shorts aren't that high. I think the lens flare is a trick to make up for the CGI.

Regarding the main series, yes def watch it in order. I really enjoyed it, though of course there are bits where you need to stick with it and you do need to appreciate they are being really ambitious for the budget.
