Until you need an advanced feature or until you hit file incompatibilities because whatever partner/client you're working with is on Office and OpenOffice can either not open it or render it correctly.

I can honestly say this hasn't happened to me for several years. MS hasn't really changed their file format much since the last major revamp so OO and LibreOffice seem to be able to handle it just fine.

As for advanced features, the whole "office suite" paradigm hit it's wall back in 2010. Nothing of note has changed besides the aesthetics since then.

Formatting/presentation issues happen to me all the time, with either Open or Libre Office. I now PDF anything or keep it as an RTF and tidy it up at the office. Spreadsheets are worse, and it often takes more than a cursory glance to identify there is a problem.

Libre Office is perfectly fine for home use. It's not viable for many offices though, firstly because of the imperfect compatibility with the MS Office that contacts will be using and secondly because staff can be expected to have familiarity with MS Office while few will know anything else.

That's before we get into the complicated stuff like macros, ODBC etc.

Not sure whether to install these on a 6950, given the "improvements" will be for the 7900 range and often performance actually goes backwards on older hardware.

So... Companies other than Steam are finally starting to get it?

I know there's some Blurays you can buy that come with a DVD + electronic version. The DVD is great to have but the electronic version isn't exactly convenient type of service.

Pinch of salt with the specs, tho bear in mind they'll be selling the hardware at a loss for a long time in order to recoup the money on game sales and also they price based on anticipated cost savings over time in future.

If next-box costs them $800 now and $400 in 4 years time then they see it as costing $600 throughout. The rest is just timing and cashflow. (Obviously a simplification as costs drop gradually over time, units sell at varying rates and prices over that time, but the principle remains.)

Not a bad list includes many things people have been talking about.

Except I'm wary about balance "tweaks", how many games get these right? Usually they just leave a new imbalance but one that's much more significant until people re-adapt. Likely also to be nerfs.

And how OTT have they gone against spawn "camping", otherwise known as securing the cap? Yeah great, being spawn camped is annoying and everything, but the way most bases are designed there's not really any option if you want to cap. The spawn is right beside the cap point! If you've got pushed back into spawn you were always going to lose anyway.

Xi3's website seems to have been slashdotted or whatever but it seems their "performance" unit uses an AMD APU, so basically laptop CPU + GPU chip.

I wouldn't be surprised though if this were to be one of many Steam boxes. IMHO it makes a lot more sense for Valve to basically licence and certify anyone who makes a box that fits their specified criteria.

Not sure I can fathom what they were thinking with this.

Living-room electronics requires a huge amount of marketing and brand presence. I'm not sure Nvidia has that. AFAIK Nvidia have only ever sold to enthusiasts and manufacturers.

When I saw they were running Android I figured Android would allow them to bypass that; but then it seems they're not running stock Android nor the android store?

I guess at worst it's a tech demo for other manufacturers.

Is it a must-buy? I have tons of games still to play including XCOM and Dishonoured as it is, and I can't put down Planetside 2.

Alternately, Steam is showing it's backup tool is available for the game, 9.8gb. Not sure how that plays with the launcher but Bludd's directions make it seem viable.

So far the only "must get" skills seem to be pretty cheap in certs (i.e. experience points).

You could spend quite a bit more for tank and gunship/fighter upgrades. The aircraft especially, people specialise in those i.e. spend all their points/real cash there.

For infantry though, you're competitive enough out of the gate. If you get the drop on someone who's maxed out, you're going to win. If you both surprise each other and you've got significantly better aim, you're going to win.

Take the most ostentatiously contentious cert upgrade - health boost. The max health boost you can get, which very few people have yet, is 25% - but, not really. Shields are basically just a regenerating health bar, so total advantage in TTK is actually only about half the health boost. And you need 1211 certs for 25%. For a 15% boost, which will leave you at a net 5% disadvantage or something compared to that rare fully specced guy, it costs 61 certs, which you should get in a single session - in an hour when rolling with a decent squad.

Personally I figured I'd be happy to spend the equivalent /$ of a new game on this. I've only spent 4, on a 7-day EXP booster since I figured I'd be playing a lot this weekend anyway. I haven't felt the need to buy any items yet and I now have about 600 cert points racked up that I haven't even thought what to spend on.

Admittedly the real-money does not seem very good value as you don't get a lot for the money. That you don't need the items is one thing, but it'd be nice to be buying more choices. I might sink some real money into it if/when they have another 2x or 3x "station cash" sales.

The game has problems but P2W isn't one of them.

If you do play, bear in mind the game is 1000x more fun when you're in a good platoon, using voice comms, waypoints etc. The biggest issue for the game IMHO is that is not reliably available.

I think the part of the issue here is everyone defends from inside the base, which is easy to get trapped in, while enemy continually respawns at their sundies.

There's no point to this unless they're just holding them off while other groups spawn nearby (i.e. outside) and take out the sundies. But then there's the enemy tanks, to get your own tanks the next vehicle spawn is so far away there's something else to do.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good mouse? Liked this MX510 which is finally giving up the ghost, so from my attempts at research suggests the G400 is the default replacement? (I can't see the MX510 at my usual stores.)

I should probably replace this "fUnc" mouse pad aswell. SteelSeries 4D? 4HD?

True this was crap, but the HDD system isn't that much better with W7 either since it can take forever to display the contents of a folder that's not been opened for a while, even with thumbnails disabled.

W7 didn't change anything about needing Vista or newer for DX10...

Sure Windows7 is what Vista was supposed to be at launch, but I still say fuck Microsoft for releasing a half-assed product.
Again though the only reason W7 isn't half-assed is that they got through what they needed to with Vista. If they'd skipped out Vista then the whole 64bit drivers issues would just have happened with W7.

Sort of. I'm really rusty on this stuff but...

The ping is usually round-trip time, so it's how long it takes your cpu to send a packet, the packet to get there, the server to process it, packet to get back and your cpu to process it.

However that does not mean your latency is actually half the ping.

Remember what you see on screen is already out of date by the time it took you to get the data from the server. So by the time the server gets your response the total gap is indeed the full ping time.

This is based on Quake-style netcode where everything is done on the server. I'm not going to try and explain or even pretend to understand other approaches because whenever I read anything about them I get annoyed - IMHO the server should be king and arbiter, any other way is stupid and unfair.

It also assumes there is no timenudge/prediction/hocus-pocus going on. Some games try to reduce the effect of latency by putting info on screen that is a guess about the future. When it is accurate it does effectively negate the latency and you aim where you want to hit. But when it is wrong it can double or treble your effective latency because it showed you the player being distance-moved-in-100msec to the left of where he actually was when packet was sent out to you, but by the time you get it he might actually have gone distance-moved-in-100msec to the right thus the error is 200msec. However, by the time that is worked out it is again making another prediction a futher distance-moved-in-100msec to the right so the total on-screen adjustment is 300msec.

Again I favour Quake approach here because the default timenudge was 0 but player could set it to their preference. It's more common for games to force some prediction and not even tell you that it is doing it.

The average casual gamer wants to shoot where he wants to hit, therefore wants prediction. The average "skilled" player wants to control leading the target etc so wants minimum error, i.e no prediction (well okay, maybe a small amount of timenudge if has highish ping; a small amount of timenudge should be quite accurate, I would think the errors should scale up dramatically with the level of tn applied, probably logarithmically or exponentially)

This all gets a lot more complicated once you factor in the server calculating the gamestate in intervals, it taking time to do so, the latency in your cpu/graphics card/mouse etc
