The whole player selection thing is pretty dumb because they have no enforced gameplay or anything - which makes them useless since everyone just kills everyone else.

They're trying to make it a big clan game - which obviously is not gonna happen until rockstar rock our worlds with gta4 multiplayer, hopefully.

a legitemate worry.

I don't think this is going to be a problem though.

They reckon that hl2 will start pre-caching invsibly when it goes gold and by the time they launch you should already have it downloaded!

This worked fine with the hl2 movies. Whether they can pull it off with hl2 or not will be interesting.

You have to bear in mind that the only people that will be downlaoding it will be the people who have paid for it through steam.

If you're tired of trying to get steam to work, close steam, uninstall it and play the old half-life for a week or two.

They might have fixed the problems by then and we dont have to listen to your constant moaning.

im thankful that they're trying something.

If it does fail at least they did try something, they did have ideas, they did attempt to make it better.

Even if it does ultimately fail and they have to reverse everything, its still set the foundations for future products like it, it will show the weak points and the striong points.

Weak points being that the majority of people try it at the same time as 100,000 other people and it gets jammed and they dismiss it as crap.

It would help steam out a lot if it told you what it was doing.. then the user would understand why they are waiting.

as for your points.

1) it functioned perfectly in the late stages of the beta, the reason its failing now is because everything is totally rammed. Slight oversight.. But it shouldnt happen again (since people wont all be downloading 2gigs at the same time again).

2) Agreed, it doesnt really hog the system though, just steam freezes. (which makes you think 'has it crashed')

3) My FPS have actually improved. The adition of a proper windowed mode is welcomed, the friends list is useful.

4) That's never happened to me. Maybe you were playing on a fadetoblack server? the server variable?

a) It was an open beta test
b) whatever
c) whatever.

This "fuck valve fuck steam fuck bill gates" thing is becoming a clicé

There have definately been that many accounts. You only have to join a server and type status to see the steamids to see how many people have registered.

I registered within 15 mins of it being released and my steamid is 7099.. which gives some idea of how many people registered.

I think having 200,000 people registering isnt as much sugar coating how well it went as making an excuse for how awful it went and is going.

it still uses steam, it just means that people can download this instead of relying on steam to download it (which it apparently cant do)

yeah but gta3 wasnt meant to be gorey and outrageous.

the only outrageous thing in postal 2 was the racism

Talk about beating a dead horse. The thing about postal 2 is that the people took about 10 hits to die. It would have been a lot more realistic if when you shot them in the face with an m16 they died instead of just flinching.

oh yeah, and it saves a 70mb file when it exist but doesnt say why. while its saving this (takes about a minute) you can't start steam again.

This makes restarting really slow and stupid.

it is pretty awful..

Crashes for me when i try to add deathmatch classic, and if i click on the calculate cache space or whetevr it is.

Locks up when launching a game for the first time (presumably because its allocating space on the hard drive, it would be nice for it to tell you thats what its doing with maybe a status bar).

Skinning seems to comprimise of changing the color.

It doesn't seem to have made much progress from the beta apart from the import stuff which locked up when attempting to do NS.
