Need advice - where to buy textbooks... Dec 6, 2004, 11:52

I figured that there are a decent amount of college-age folks on this board, so I wanted to pick your brains about where to buy used textbooks on the cheap.

Sure, I've Googled. However, I don't know which places are reputable and which aren't. So which sites have you used to buy textbooks at? What's your satisfaction level?

-Heather - going back to school after *cough* a few years to pick up a second bachelor's degree

Last time I was in SF I spent 4 days there, which gave a good bit of time to see the city and surroundings. Would definitely do it again, esp. since Heather hasn't been there.

I've been there (1998). I just spent the entire damned week inside a data center. I'd really like to see more of the area.

Goodness! That is one serious coffee grinder. I use a simple Braun Aromatic grinder. I picked it up for $14 at Linens and Things years ago. It keeps going and going, and I don't have to rock it/shake it to get good cafe.

However, it doesn't look nearly as cool as the Kitchen Aid one.

I really hope this works for you. You'll sometimes have to apply it twice, but it's a pretty cheap thing to try.

Around here we use Borax for curing salmon and steelhead eggs for fishing.

I wasn't aware Borax was edible! *raises eyebrows*

I've never dealt with fleas before and if it wasn't for the itchy cat I would never have noticed (or got them in the house, for that matter) because so far they don't bother me. In fact the only fleas I've seen are a few dead ones coming off the cat since she's been treated. The thing is I'm a little freaked out about the whole thing and jump every time I have the slightest itch.

What has helped me in the past when dealing with cats and fleas is using Borax in the carpet. Borax can be found in the laundry aisle of your local megamart - it's a powdered laundry booster - http://www.dialcorp.com/index.cfm?page_id=55)

You sprinkle it into the carpet, let it sit for a while, then sweep out the excess. The remainder sits in the carpet and literally dehydrates the fleas.

It worked wonders when I lived in Florida and had a couple of indoor/outdoor cats.

Just my $0.02.

This is simple. The cats get their own room. Really. You put their boxes and food in there, and put a baby gate in the doorway. Cats jump over the gate to get in and out, child can't get in...

Hrm...we don't have an extra room, but we could secure off part of our basement/office as a cat-only zone.

Now to convince Zathrus to spend the money on the extend-o-gate.

Depends on how you feel about making your kids cry.
At 9 months things are a learned response. ie, punishiment = pain = crying = remebering that catfood eating = crying.

My 2 cents. Not a parent, but have 15 nephews, neices of which I see how they are brought up, some good some bad parents in their own environment.

Other will probably say bad things about me for what I post, but I grew up this way, and I am glad I did.

/edit: The best way to explain is a hot oven. You can tell a kid "no hot" a million times, but the last time they are told and touch it...they will never do it again.

The problem is twofold. She likes to crawl over to the food bowls for the cats and dump them out. The cats don't like eating scattered kibble, so they'll just bitch.

The whole "eating the cat food" issue is next month. She doesn't quite know what to do with hard foods yet. She's still consuming mother's milk and soft jarred foods. (However, toast and crackers are gaining in popularity.)

Just get a black blanket and throw it over his head and monitor and then turn the lights back on.

I like the way you think.

When Zathrus is playing a game I'm not particularly into, we negotiate play time. I'll do something else for a while (hour or two) while he plays. In addition, he tends to wake earlier than me on weekends, so that gives him quiet-gaming time when I'm not up to bug him or to begin the day of errands/chores/tending to the offspring.

The biggest issue I have with Z playing FPS? The fact that he turns all of the lights off in our office. I end up trying to sort mail/surf in the glow of the monitor. It's too hard on the eyes.

However, the whole sticker thing in books is a roadblock to us ever moving to East Cobb. I love the schools and the neighborhoods, but I would like our daughter to be taught science versus dogma.

And the Dakotas are very conservative... the entire Midwest is. Particularly when you start talking about family values and economics.

No kidding. When we were in South Dakota back in '02, the number of anti-abortion signs just blew me away. Here I was thinking that Georgia was conservative...it didn't even come close to SD.

It's an Monster iCarPlay Wireless - love it. I rarely have any issues with interference (except when I'm in the underground parking garage for the major telecom firm I work for...)

That's why I said Half Right, not Half Wrong.

Mea culpa. However, we must have worked in different restaurants, because getting in the ass was not part of my normal job description.

Zathrus - Half right

The main reason is that when you have a large table, you take up a lot of floor space. Servers pay is mainly tips, so to protect the servers tips (wages) most restaurants force a large tip on a big table. If five large tables come in in one week, and tip poorly, the livelyhood of the servers is threatened. Who'da thunk, labor protection in America? what?

As someone who waited tables in high school and college (restaurants from the Cracker Barrel to 5 star establishments), I can say that serving a large table is much harder work than keeping several small tables going. You've got to have everything out at the same time, keep a large group of people happy, and they do have a longer turnover than multiples.

The Tums were so I wouldn't die from heartburn. GAH!

First trimester - morning sickness. Spaghetti with jar sauce or Frosted Flakes with ice cold milk were the 2 primary meals I could deal with.

Second & third trimester - I could eat almost anything that I normally did. I did fiercely crave mozzarella sticks. Zathrus had to suffer through those being ordered whenever we went out to eat.

Some food smells did bug me - I did put down a moratorium on burgers cooked in the house for a while. Poor Z - we had steaks instead.

The worst part is just about every phone call we make is long distance. My office is roughly 12 miles from home and THAT is a long distance call. My parents live one township over (2 miles max) - long distance because they are Verizon customers.

Can you drop your land line, and keep your DSL? I'd advise you move all your calls to cell phone, where you can get bundled long distance into your plan.

Does TWC have any sort of presence in your area? They're majorly branching into the VoIP business...
