There's a game called Hardwar, available for free on The Underdogs, an abandonware website. Hardwar is highly rated as a good successor to Elite. Probably does a better job than Freelancer. Unfortunately, it's so old it's a DOS Game.

I-War 2 came out a year or two ago, it's much better than this. Better graphics, sound, look, feel, etc etc. Sure, it forced you to be a pirate, but download some MODs (very well supported by the game) and you can also dock with every station in the game, and trade commodities as you see fit.

This game came out 2-3 years too late.

Surely, after 4.5 years of development, the game is playable in some fashion. The game should be released for free, to the public, and the code too.

the original DOTC that came out more than 14 years ago had what would be considered console gameplay by today's standard, I think. I guess if they're only releasing this new one on the PC, it's because they figure the only people who remember the original will still be on the PC.

From reading one of the previews, this is yet another strange attempt by the folks at Neo-Origin Digital Anvil to make something innovative in a genre that's never really been all that popular. Diablo in space. hmmmmmmmm.

Savage will probably get good reviews, hailed for its innovative gameplay. But few will play it, and it will barely break even at the market, at best. The decision to go with a fantasy FPS setting will be the death blow. Hexen/Heretic games, Thief, Heroes of Might and Magic. All of these FPS fantasy games have mostly faded away from memory, some were outright failures.. others simply sold a fraction of the gun-toting games. It's peculiar how the more ambitious game designers seem to go out of their way to make games in genres that are not popular. Battlezone games, FPS/RTS hybrid, great reviews, tank combat. Market failure. System Shock 2, FPS/RPG hybrid, great reviews, sci-fi space setting.

Too much lag Oct 31, 2002, 20:47

ok. quick review.

1) Too much lag. 700 ping and up. This is apparently
a game bug, and not a server issue (which i thought
it was). If this is true, i have no idea how such
a huge bug coulda slipped by the beta process.

2) this game is an action/STRATEGY game. Small
on action, big on STRATEGY. Playing on the marines
side is rather boring, as you're extremely slow. CS/DOD and even TFC offer more exciting gameplay, unfortunately. But it may appeal to people with desire for slower game

Predictions..
Critics will hail the game as innovative and wicked cool. They will rate the game highly. But player growth will stagnate, as the game's long term enjoyment and mass appeal isn't good. Only the hardcore fans will stick around. Critics usually judge a game from a few days of playing, not weeks.

anyway, once the lag clears up, it's definately worth a download.

i don't remember Action HL too much, but Specialists reminds me of it. It's like a better AHL. There's only two teamplay
maps, and the DM gets rather old fast, so beware. Also, there aren't many servers running TS yet. most of the servers there are are very small ones, small player counts. Actually not that bad considering the DM-focused gameplay that there currently is. The maps really get crappy when there's too many players.

Also, there's no voice chat. And no one talks to each other, and there are no "radio commands" like CS/DOD. Not that bad, considering the lack of any real strategy behind the gameplay. Players move much faster than CS/DOD. DM maps are interesting in that you can grab a slow motion powerup and it'll slow down the game for everyone for a few seconds. Very cool to see in action (Max Payne-ish)

I don't see this game getting near DOD/CS/TFC levels of popularity, but it should do nicely tho!

I dunno what's with you peeps, but when that guy in Korea bought it, I toasted him with a friend on a great way to go! What better way to die than to die while doing what you love. (OK, it would be nice dying while saving the world from destruction, but those opporunities aren't exactly in the Classifieds).

I told my friend.. "I hope he died after kicking serious ass. Otherwise, it would suck being shot to the pinky toe by a Kar98 in DOD and THEN dying. Ugh!"

side note: how can someone die from a mere 30 hours? I think my longest session was 10 hours.. well, I guess if the guy didn't drink any water...... *boggle*
